SUPERIORITY COMPLEX [NINE CALLISTO INSTRUMENTAL]

The label’s inaugural release, Ad Astra, represents the fruits of a collaboration that has been a long time in the making. Kiss, fresh off the back of his evolutionary Strangers EP on Mörk, partners with compatriot Norwell, who is following up a prolific 2017 – one in which Helena Hauff named his ODD EP her favourite record of the year.

Crisis’ five-track debut is an exploration of mutual sonic interest: sci-fi narrative and analogue dedication combine to reinterpret and evolve the blueprint electro it draws influence from. Opening-track Tempel 1’s beatless synth ode paves the way for the fearless machine-funk workout to come – the calm before the storm, as it were. But you’d be forgiven for thinking the EP treads similar ground as it progresses. The eponymous track’s tonal restraint is the yin to the jugular yang of Alpha Hertz, whilst Motor City Dreams’ wistful beauty is a world away from the ancestral void of Density Waves.

And as such, Ad Astra plays masterfully with its core themes. Tension and release, dystopia and utopia, past and future… This is a bold statement of intent from an institution that will continue to be synonymous with progressive electronica.

Blossoming from the depths of Saint-Etienne, Worst Records is proud to present the second release of its catalogue. In the right path opened by A Strange Wedding with his debut vinyl called « Meta Romance », Jacques Satre delivers with « Anatole Trance » a radical hallucinogenic journey through warped horizons of the mind. This long time member of the Positive Education crew sets up a curious yet fascinating mixture of bass-driven downtempo techno, free range acidalia and fierce sense of absurd humor. The three tracks evolve slowly, building up between litanies for wrecked concrete samples and colourful enchantment. This ambivalence results in dancefloor burning tunes that could also be the soundtrack for mesmerizing off-time afterhours. A concentrate of local wizardry that unveils once again hollow zones of the sound of Saint-Etienne.

Zerkalo is the debut EP from Moscow's Soft Blade. Soft Blade is steadily building a reputation as a producer and DJ in Moscow's DIY underground experimental electronic scene. Soft Blade has collaborated with RTS.FM and shared the stage with a variety of exciting young Russian artists. Her work has been featured in Medium, Tiny Mix Tapes, and ATTN Magazine. Her single "Я Не Хочу Быть с Тобой" debuted on the Dirty Tapes DT018: DIRTY TAPES FROM RUSSIA VOL. II.

You can find Soft Blade's all seeing eye graffiti tag in the abandon buildings around Moscow. If you are afraid of wolves, then be sure to purchase a handmade talisman from Soft Blade's Bandcamp page for protection against evil spirits of all kinds. The package includes a mirror, a porcelain wolf's tooth, several brass objects, and a guitar pick.

The EP's title "Zerkalo" the Russian word for mirror(Зеркало). Reflection is central to this project. The EP's title carries a double meaning because of its connection to legendary Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. Though the project was not directly inspired by the film, Zerkalo represents the gritty, muddy, and uncertain realities painted in the bleak visions of futurism presented in 70s science fiction. Zerkalo draws inspiration from house, techno, electro, and punk. Expect ethereal vocals soaring over hazy beats, muddy pads, pulsing low end frequencies, and razor sharp hi hats throughout Zerkalo.

Introducing a new label and musical direction for Lee Renacre from 100Hz with, PUSHER. His aim is to push the boundaries of electronic music by using different time signatures and poly rhythmic patterns, and by not using 4/4 patterns and the standard hat clap beats it’s possible to create a different style of mood and dancing which is deep loose and skippy.  Pusher has a bold new Techno sound and also a gentle side with tracks of deep emotive strings and melody’s.

This Series of tracks is called Drug Music, a stripped down funky style with unusual beat patterns and poly rhythmic elements best enjoyed and fully understood when in an euphoric state, always recorded from a live studio jam where Lee’s improvised sounds come to life with some unexpected results.  Lee also collaborates with artist and good friends for some extra depth and to mix up this unique style of electronica. 

The first of the Pusher EP’s is a thumping minimal and full on affair with infectious killer acid riffs in odd time signatures. Crisp funky modulating hats  monster bass lines and dramatic interplanetary sounds with live tweaks, twists and turns. Also some seriously deep and intense music is coming from this live jam situation with a thrilling string track to round off the Pusher experience.

https://soundcloud.com/kedr_livanskiy ’s second album, Your Need, is a celebration of life and rebirth. It’s about a fighter’s spirit, and if you will, a little audacity and courage. DJ’ing and early forms of dance music inspired a furious burst of creative energy after months of melancholy, sadness and reflection to record the album in only a matter of weeks.

After her first album, Ariadna, Kedr felt lost with her identity and was searching for the direction of her next chapter. For a while she felt trapped by her own image and needed quite some time to resolve this internal dissonance – to grow, to evolve.

DJ’ing was the main catalyst to pull her out of this rut. The art form shifted her inspiration to mainly old school styles of dance music: ghetto, house, breakbeat and UK garage. For the prior year and a half she was listening to ambient, kraut-rock and more experimental genres – one can hear the brighter, more energetic influence of early electronic music in the songs on Your Need versus Ariadna.

One day she was talking with her friend Flaty (Zhenya), a very talented artist from St. Petersburg who’s signed to the GOST ZVUK label, and they decided to do a single together. He came to visit her in Moscow, but they ended up spending 10 whole days writing music together, from dawn to dusk.

They vibed off each other’s musical ideas perfectly and understood each other even without speaking. Zhenya is a beatmaster and pays attention to even the smallest details of a track. He brought incredible richness to the composition and Kedr considers him her teacher in this area. Kedr was in charge of the melodies and vibe of the tracks, and the vocal elements.

Your Need is like a chapter of life. It’s a story that illustrates different scenarios and moods that our mythical hero experiences, living in an urban jungle. From lost love to a bad trip on the dancefloor, from euphoria to deep introspection. Our hero sometimes feels bold, lost or devastated, but also tender and full, like all of us at some point in life. The ending is joyful and bright. The last song gives hope and faith that a new day will come and wash away the old. You can feel like new every day.

Your Need reflects an array of genres and a mix of cultures -- a harmonious combination of differences. Everything Kedr loves about ghetto music, in the traditions of house, dub, breakbeat, 90s electronic music and modern sounds – she’s embraced and expressed it all throughout. Your Need is Kedr’s ode to music from different eras and changing periods.

People often ask us how we continually / consistently uncover such amazing talent from around the world. I could go on for hours about it but the short answer is we just look… really, really hard. We go deep, with an open mind, and an ear tuned acutely to “the vibe”. It’s not a popularity contest and definitely not about expectations of what we are as a label. We've never been about a “sound” but more an attitude: we like what we like, and we aren’t afraid to back it. We put our money where our mouth is, so to speak. In that spirit, Ukrainian bad bwoy Bejenec has to be one of my favorite discoveries of the last year. His artist bio describes him as “young ukrainian artist and producer who performs razor-sharp melodic live acts, traversing breakbeat, acid, techno etc”. Which in 2019 is pretty standard, BUT it was the simple use of “etc” that really pulled me in with an immediate sense of playfullness and zero-fuck-giving. I find that essence permeating throughout all his music & online visual diaries (his instagram, cheekyly titled “@albms4free” alone is certain to mess up the algorithms of your mind). Bejenec’s music is attention grabbing, and makes you look twice to try figure it out. Like that cheap male hooker that is surprisingly impossibly hot, Standing at 3am on the corner of a bad street, in a neighbourhood you really shouldn't feel comfortable in, but you find yourself "into it". Bejenec's latest offering "Don't Stand And Weep"  has that "double take” factor, and for us, THAT is the vital ingredient.
