The Kavanaghs - Friday On My Mind

Maybe some people are too young to remember, but during the late 80’s ABBA was a very uncool band, a cheesy thing from the 70’s. No one was doing ABBA covers, except for some synthpop/ electropop bands like Information Society, Men Without Hats and, later, Erasure. Strangely, for synthpop fans too young to remember the originals, these were the first glimpses of ABBA’s master songwriting. Much later, the whole A*Teens/ Mamma Mia craze started and ABBA became fashionable again for the masses. This is not only an ABBA tribute, it’s a tribute to all these pioneer synthpop and electropop artists that covered ABBA when no one was doing that.

As usual, Softcore Express’ sound combines a classic and a modern electropop sounds and, this time, it is the wonderful singer Polette AKA Paula Varela (an amazing vocalist and sessionist who sung countless jingles and shared stages with Shakira and Deep Purple among many others) the one who sings, making this electro tribute a perfect ABBA listening experience.

A new Canal Pop song, a version of “How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously” will be available as part of the compilation Prism – A Tribute To Pet Shop Boys, released by the electropop music blog Electrozombies, from Germany. The song features vocals by Argentinean singer Arabescos, in her first collaboration with Canal Pop. 

The official page for the tribute is here. It features 22 tracks, all of them cover versions of Pet Shop Boys songs performed by some of the best artists in the electropop/ synthpop/ synthwave international underground scene (names like Parralox, Junksista, Machinista, Technique, etc.). As usual, Canal Pop is the only artist from Argentina.

Softcore Express – Synthango ES 2320 Eternal Sunday presents an amazing album: Synthango, by Softcore Express, an album that compiles instrumental versions of 11 of the best known tango pieces in the Universe produced with a synthpop/ synthwave sound, made with vintage analog synthesizers. Electronic tango or electrotango became popular as a genre around the year 2000, but was mostly a combination of tango classic sounds, especially the bandoneon/ tango accordion, with loops and electronic percussion (not always produced in good taste). This is not what Synthango is: there’s no bandoneon/ tango accordion or any other acoustic instrument in this album, everything was replaced with pulsating lines of analog synthesizers that create a surprising sound collage that was never done before, very catchy and overflowing with naïve freshness. Synthango is both an homage to tango from Buenos Aires and to the synthpop sound of the pioneer producers that developed electronic music based on synthesizers during the 70s and 80s. The sound and arrangements evoke legendary producers and artists like Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, Cerrone and synthpop pioneers like Yazoo, SoftCell o Depeche Mode, giving as a result a tango album that’s unique, revolutionary and apt for a global public and market.
