War Tongue is a heavy-noise trio out of San Jose, CA.   Born after a Jesus Lizard reunion show high, decades long friends, and original members of Sloe (Cargo Headhunter, Sessions) Keith Brinkley (bass) and Rob Campbell (guitar/vox) mused of starting another project that would satisfy their desire for something musically aggressive in their lives.  Something that would capture their love of the “heavy” bands they worshiped in their youth, such as Bad Brains and Cro-Mags.  With influences from industrial groups like Godflesh and Nine Inch Nails, as well as post-punk innovators Fugazi and The Jesus Lizard.  

The on and off bandmates had been working with more mellow projects;  Rob with Desertshore/Raven State (including members of Sun Kill Moon, Red House Painters) and Keith with Brawley Banks (with members of Sunny Day Real Estate, Foo Fighters).  Feeling burnt out from the large, multi-instrument, Floyd-esque tunes from the last few years, the two wanted something stripped, light, and brutal.  In order to bring musical brutality, a band must have the right drummer.  Rob immediately knew who to contact, his younger cousin, Steve Campbell (drums).  Steve’s thundering, apocalyptic destruction of the kit on Bog Oak’s “A Treatise on Resurrection and the Afterlife” (Svart Records) was all Keith needed to hear, no audition necessary.  

By the end of the first jam session, the three knew they had something: an aggressive release not felt for a very long time.  Within 6 months the band had a few shows under its belt and was in the studio recording their debut EP.  Then, the world went to shit.  COVID-19 pandemic hit and here we are.

War Tongue has been currently writing and rehearsing occasionally, following all the CDC guidelines.  We are hoping for a quick recovery for all.  For our friends, family, and music venues.
