Back in the nineties, Human Beings were pioneers in the Dutch techno scene. And The Matrix may well be their finest moment. SoHaSo gives this stone-cold classic the re-release it deserves, together with a magical Plaid-remix and a forgotten track, straight from DAT.

Together with Quazar and Fierce Ruling Diva, Utrecht-based duo Human Beings were among the very first brave enough to go live, back in 1992. Dance music was still called house or techno. Other flavors only came later.

Both Allert Aalders and Bert van der Grift were proper nerds. Their studio was filled to the brims with vintage synthesizers and drum computers and all machines were constantly challenged. Van der Grift sadly passed away in 2005 after a sudden cerebral haemorrhage, marking the abrupt end of Human Beings.

The Matrix ticks all the boxes of a proper Human Beings-tune: crystal clear melodies sweeping from corner to corner, ultra-clever drum programming and a main theme that knocks your socks right off. In the energetic live version, they have shaped the track to perfection. A secret weapon that works wonders on dancefloors, even 30 years later.

London duo Plaid strip The Matrix to its bare essentials, focusing on the main melody while giving the kick a bit more oomph in a Plaid kinda way.	

Ghost in the Shell is exactly that. A forgotten off-beat track, made during one of those many sessions in Bert's crampy studio. Its murky downtempo rhythms take a nod to both Meat Beat Manifesto and Renegade Sound Wave.

How do you get 'in the box'? Gal Tsadok-Hai knows. After some experiments with hardware, the Amsterdam-based electronic producer recently went back to his first love: computer composing. Thus keeping open all the options.

Footsteps is his first EP for SoHaSo, filled with four tracks of adventurous, left-field explorations in rhythm and melody. cl_forwardspeed 5 is dominated by sub low baslines and razor blade rhythms, while mp_footsteps 1 nods more towards early Aphex Twin and the IDM trickery from last century.

Flip the record for max_smokepuffs 999, on which Gal Tsadok- Hai proves he can also bring a straight four-four to great heights. It is both spacious and tense, which makes for a great combination.
On closer sv_gravity 0 it's back to the days when melody was still the default in most techno and electro. If you like the abstract machine funk from Dopplereffekt, this might just be right up your alley.

Donato Dozzy, Marco Shuttle and Ultrastation are among the names on these great remix package on the trustworthy SoHaSo label. After two well received EP's -Laren and ZL2- Bas Dobbelaer and Vand asked a few like-minded spirits to reset the dials of some of their best work. With their melancholic, melodic and highly detailed techno-infused productions, the two Dutch producers carved a name for themselves over the last four years.

Italian producer Donato Dozzy takes Transit (a track from 2019) into a lush, green forrest. Where dew water is still dripping from the trees while string-like melodies slowly swirl around them. Beautiful stuff.

Gal Tsadok-Hai takes a similar path, though his take on Gateway to Gaia is a bit gloomier. Dusk is setting in and so is melancholia.

Same goes for Marco Shuttles version of Reflect, a track from 2021. The London-based Italian producer left out kickdrums and basslines, settling instead for a feverish percussion-infused meditation.

Once on the flipside, the club vibe truly kicks in. With a minimalist, bassline heavy remix by Shoal of Story of Blade and an equally effective techno remake from Ultrastation, who turns Runner into a hypnotic peak time monster.

Excellent high impact techno from Amsterdam, where Italian producer Francesco Rosati found his home. After releases on labels like Absolute, Sungate and Voltage, the 'Encounter' EP is his debut release for the NOWHERE series on Something Happening, Somewhere.

Rosati calls his new EP a statement to his stylistic musical output. He uses a hybrid setup of vintage analog machines and digital devices. For Encounter he wanted to grab the spirit of the moment. All five tracks were recorded directly in a single take, capturing pure energy.

It is probably the most pure techno release SoHaSo has done in a while. Opener Stabber alone is pure energy, with its roling Reese-like baselines, mesmerizing hi-hats and hypnotizing loops. The whole EP is a respectful nod to Detroit masters like Robert Hood and Jeff Mills while it also winks back to the menacing UK techno sound of the 90s. Or like Rosati says on his Soundcloud: "Future is the door - past is the key."

Paris is burning! And Eliott Litrowski lit the match with his latest EP for OOSSHA. The producer from France once saw the light in the famous Rex club in Paris but has a profound love for Dutch underground dance music. He previously released singles on Moustache and Bordello a Parigi and now debuts on Utrecht based SoHaSo sublabel OOSSHA.

On his Long Story Short EP, Litrowski combines the boldness of Dutch west coast electro with the flair and finesse of French techno, while throwing in a hint of sweet flavoured Italo vibes. A good example is Blind Pilot, which is both frivolous and funky.

Or jump the needle to Cereal Funk, where the dry hi-hats and wild arpeggio’s give more than a nod to Dopplereffekt, while staying in fourth gear. No wonder the track gets a remix treatment by Ed DMX, who turns Cereal Funk into a proper electro monster without losing the core futuristic elements. Long story short, Litrowski’s music is both playful, quirky and tailor made for clubs.

Laura BCR debuts on Dutch label SoHaSo with a cassette and digital EP of ambient techno abstractions. Fans of her DJ sets, Rinse France radio show or label On Board Music will know what to expect.

Initial houses four originals and a collaboration with Forest On Stasys, each focusing on a distinct strain of dubwise ambient or aqueous, introspective techno. It’s a style Laura has been exploring for the past couple of years, translating the vibe of her acclaimed DJ sets into the studio.

Her EP for SoHaSo is her most substantial yet, diving deep into the mind of the Berlin-based Française, and connecting the dots between her wide-ranging taste within the space of hypnotic body music.

Our 49th SoHaSo podcast is courtesy of Amsterdam-based Anne Korteweg aka https://soundcloud.com/villete. She has been releasing her blissful electronica since 2016, including a very nice addition to our SOMEWHERE IV compilation back in 2020. Korteweg really takes us on a journey on this mix. It starts out puffing, scratching and tingling with the pure joy of ambient textures, before sprinkling bits of dubby electronics and piano motifs on top. Villete demonstrates a keen ear for subtlety, patience and cohesion, weaving tracks together in such a way it feels like they were always meant to be heard in this particular context. New work from SoHaSo head honcho Nuno dos Santos. He made Traces when the world was still a silent place and most sound systems stood idle. As did the phone that normally brought the Utrecht-based DJ & producer new bookings.

Three routes run through the Traces EP, with lines from Detroit, London and Berlin crossing in the red-hot middle. Phoise is butter smooth techno that is both indebted to Juan Atkins' machine funk as to European producers such as Dave Angel an Sterac.
On Frontside Disaster, the shutters close to keep out the sunlight, while razor-sharp snares bring the situation to a head.
 
And if not, Deniro does. The Hague-based DJ and producer transforms Frontline Disaster into a peak time techno monster that undoubtedly ends up in the record boxes of DJs like Rødhåd and Marcel Dettmann.

The title Frontline Disaster comes from skateboarding, says Dos Santos. "It's a trick on a ramp. I recently heard skaters talk about that special moment when everything falls into place and you are in this flow," he says. "I felt that flow while I was making this track."

SoHaSo continues their summer sampler series with part 3. Again, the Utrecht based record label brings you some forgotten beauties from the past. Mostly from the Lowlands this time.

Perfect Virtue by British trio Shi Take is one of those gems. Tribal house rhythms from 30 years ago, with a bassline that makes you want to wiggle all the way to the center of the dance floor.

SoHaSo label head honcho Nuno had been playing a demo of Tools for Fools by Dutch producer Sluwe Vos for years, when he found out the energetic rhythm track never got a proper release. Well, now it has.

Flip over for some more forgotten Dutch house history. Jibaros is a project from dance veteran Eric Cycle. It has all the elements that made house music from the lowlands so good in those days: percussive beats, a decent baseline and good melodies sprinkled on top. It's a layercake of sweet stuff that just keeps on building. Very pricey on Discogs nowadays, but luckily Cycle still had the original DAT-tape lying around.

Nozem is a bit of the odd one out. It's actually a project by a young dude from the south of Holland but it sounds like he stepped into a time machine which warped him back to the 90s. The vocals (in ancient Greek!) are from Sister of Iris.

Closure track Tinkling Sensation by Delta (Alex Dijksterhuis) is more than 25 years old. With it's fast-paced rhythms this piano driven tune could well be something post-progressive from Scandinavia. But this is the real deal. Uplifting rave music from the days people were still carrying fluor sticks.

A core member of De Lichting crew, Nathan debuted his new alias (changed from Nathan Surreal) with the Voltage Controlled Love Affair EP earlier this year. Besides all these achievements, Nathan also debuted on SoHaSo late last year with a beautiful ambient track under his Keyeke alias.

Everybody loves a good mystery. The second chapter of the Nowhere Series brings you to France, Kalamazoo, Arnhem and Den Haag. Four forgotten dance floor bangers by folks who clearly remember the first summer of love, back in 1988.

First up is a dark and twisted acid track by @laurent-garnier. Flashback stems from 1997, but has aged like a good single malt whiskey from France. You better believe it.

It Talks To Me is proper Detroit techno, with it's abstract stabs and moody strings. Except it's from Poland, where US-born @d-knox now resides since 2005 and where he has pumped out an amazing discography. You can't get any closer to early Transmat-energy than with this raw track from 1995.

On the flip it is over to Holland, for two forgotten gems. Inferno came out on vinyl, back in 1993. On the legendary label Gyrate. It's a full on acid affair, with a massive break. Made by Dutchies Frederik (of Pako & Frederik fame), Eric De Man & Heiko van Eindhoven. For this release still vinyl only.

Solartrek by @roland-klinkenberg was picked up by I-F in 1995 for his Top Secret label. The energetic and surprisingly bright track is now remastered and available on vinyl again & digital platforms for the very first time.

The primer of techno was barely dry or England already had its own variant of the genre: UK techno. Original Man by British producer Dave Angel is perhaps the perfect example of what that variant sounded like, back then. If only you knew where to find it. The single was released in 1993 on a record label that has long since ceased to exist.

Fortunately, Utrecht-based record label SoHaSo made this transverse techno-soul classic is available again, in a punchy remaster. With its juxtaposed rhythm programming and orchestral arrangements, Original Man still lives up to its title, even if it is 30 years later.

On the flip you'll find Quarter Pounder. With its nervous hi-hats and high paced rhythms, this seems like the perfect soundtrack for a highway chase between two roadhouses.

As a bonus, SoHaSo has supplemented the vinyl version of this EP with a rare Dave Angel track which also was released back in 1993 on French dance label FNAC. It's called 4th Symphony and ticks all the right techno boxes: strings, hihats and a melancholic melody.

It goes something like this: Back in March last year, just as clubs were reopening, Askmelater (aka Toine) was invited to play Utrecht's infamous WAS. club night. But unfortunately, they caught covid and were unable to make the date (most of us can relate). Stuck at home, Toine channelled both their fever dreams and their frustration at missing out on a good gig in an excellent set of moody breaks and trippy electronica. Moving through the mountains, the car illuminated the dark road ahead, guiding them as they careered around corners and darted amidst the mist.

It was cold outside, they had been in transit for some time - nestled in their cabin whilst the glimmering white of the snow capped hills was reflected in the glow of the headlights.

Excellent high impact techno from Amsterdam, where Italian producer Francesco Rosati found his home. After releases on labels like Absolute, Sungate and Voltage, the 'Encounter' EP is his debut release for the NOWHERE series on Something Happening Somewhere.

Rosati calls his new EP a statement to his stylistic musical output. He uses a hybrid setup of vintage analog machines and digital devices. For Encounter he wanted to grab the spirit of the moment. All five tracks were recorded directly in a single take, capturing pure energy.

This one has been quite some time in the making. https://soundcloud.com/lunaludmila has been a friend of the label for years now, contributing tracks to compilations, playing at SoHaSo takeovers, hanging out, and basically representing Something Happening Somewhere in the best possible way. Her dubbed-out style and meticulous mixing shines through on this hour-long mix. It’s a thick weave of grooves, pads, and basslines that seems to move ever forward. SoHaSo’s saga continues with a sound selection of singlets. Singular recordings from separate artists, bound together through Nuno Dos Santos’ spellbinding powers of creation and combination. The results are SOMEWHERE I and II: two compilations to be released digitally this summer, starting right here with part 1.	

Turning towards their inner selves, their deepest thoughts, their most hidden feelings, it seems that every single artist that was invited for SOMEWHERE I isn’t just delivering a track, no, they’re sharing a piece of themselves, showing a part that’s rarely seen or heard. From the ever evolving grooves of Love Over Entropy to the almost indie-electronica vibe of Polynation. From Sigward’s Moonfaced Oracle, chanting towards the stars, to Nuno dos Santos’ own Wibaut127, made as a last tribute to that one legendary club in Amsterdam that once was but now is no more. This and much more stories can be found when listening between the lines of every track.

The SOMEWHERE series feels like a sound based confessional. Telling unheard stories, exposing unseen surfaces and unheard sounds. A compilation to cherish, and one of which there’s another part on it’s way. SOMEWHERE II will be released later this summer, with both parts being made available on CD in very limited quantities.

An intriguing combination of names known and unknown, it’s once again testament that there’s so much happening, somewhere, all the time. And remember: this is only the first part.

Continuing the theme of inner reflection caught in music, SOMEWHERE II tells us story after story. Stories of longing, of guilt, of bitter melancholy, yet on the other hand: hope, affection and even ‘Unity’, as Paul Hughes’ addition remixed by Chymera is aptly named. Stories of laying in fields, hoping to catch falling stars, or diving deep and seeing how far you can go, somewhere, something is happening. From Stefan Vincent’s almost meditative How It Could Have Been, to Kid Culture’s nearly euphoric Arp313. From Malbetrieb’s tearjerking Nim to Locked Groove’s gloomy Namibia.

Wit Bad is the result of a beautiful collaborative project that started with illustrator Joost Stokhof. He was asked as an artist in residence for Amsterdam’s Hortus Botanicus, a place where Joost locked himself up for a week alongside the finest biodiversity in the city. Joost asked Eefje de visser to join him for a day and Eefje asked Nuno dos Santos to form a powerful trinity of which Wit Blad is the unmistakable evidence.

The original version was released in April of 2018 and we finally have a vinyl (only) version to go along with it. On the A side we find an 808 version, which is an extended version by Nuno of the ‘Wit Blad’ original. Zooming in on the drums and bass line while leaving even more space for Eefjes haunting voice. Eefje is one of Holland’s best kept music secrets, her voice is soothing and her presence like a siren song seducing you in. Immersing the music with field recordings, you can hear the birds and surroundings the piece was recorded and even some whispering voices that only add to the atmosphere.
Flipping to the other side we find our dear friend Mattheis remixing Wit Blad in a strong hypnotic vibe. Containing Mattheis’ trademark synth swirls, it’s as soothing as it is driving with spine tingling harmonics slowly creeping in and out.

This all comes packaged in a silkscreen printed cover containing the illustrations that Joost Stokhof made during their time together. The vinyl also includes a small poster including extra images by Joost and the lyrics of Wit Blad. Adding up to a beautiful feast for both the eyes and ears.
