Sun & Smoke is originally a 2-hour self-produced mix uploaded to Youtube and Soundcloud (https://asip.me/3wvukf4) in 2018 by Greek artist, https://soundcloud.com/dj_theef. Consisting of unreleased productions, the set was uploaded as a safe space, with zero expectations of it ever gaining attention or release.

After many late-night listening sessions, ASIP contacted Theef to discuss how a release might come to life. Originally consisting of 21 tracks in total –with two subsequently released on Morevi Records in 2022– ASIP had the honor of curating and sequencing an album from the remaining 19 unreleased productions, finally landing on those that best represented the intention of the original mix and the feelings it evoked upon those first moments of discovery. 

The appeal of Sun & Smoke can be found in its purity. Built with no intention or audience in mind, the album traverses core elements of deep techno, trance and downtempo. Progressive atmosphere building, addictive underlying grooves, and expansive moments of euphoria; as a mixtape, Sun & Smoke is a zero-visibility haze of eyes-closed, body-moving, forward momentum. As an album, each track is now allowed the space to deliver on its own defining atmosphere. 

From the ambient leaning beginnings of Sky Textures and the title track, Sun & Smoke, to the electro tinges of Primal Age, and the metallic swirls and glistening synths in Approaching Stars, the parts now have the chance to become greater than the sum of its original whole.

For his debut album To Sit Quietly Where Everything is Moving Fast, https://soundcloud.com/love-over-entropy used only one source: a Yamaha DX11 synthesizer. It’s a vintage machine from 1987 that was also used by early IDM and techno producers. “Working with an artificial constraint unleashed a different kind of creativity," says the The Hague-based musician, who normally does not shy away from elaborate productions.

Love over Entropy spent a lot of time working out the correct order of the tracks on the album. "I think it's important that the story also flows well on a higher level. It was a nice puzzle to solve."

Although the Covid pandemic is long behind us, much of the material on this album comes from the days when society was still largely in lockdown. "Which explains the title," says Love over Entropy. "But it also refers to my distancing myself from the hustle and bustle of the dancefloor. Up until then, I was primarily making dance music."

You won't find any kick drums or heavy bass lines on To Sit Quietly Where Everything Is Moving Fast. It is intimate, meditative and often very beautiful ambient music. But not the formless kind that seems to dominate chill-out playlists these days. Tracks like Finnkroken, Tidalene and Rotiriot have a story to tell, with a lot of effort put in to get it just right.

“To me, making music is mostly about the process. So I will spend many hours working on details that probably nobody will ever notice. Above all, the pastoral melodies stand out, undulating back and forth like foam on the surf. The harmonies are reminiscent of Isan, Boards of Canada and Murcof, while the album also pays homage to the Artificial Intelligence period on Warp Records.

According to the Dutch producer, a lot of current ambient music falls short of the original idea, as coined by Brian Eno. "Eno once described ambient as music that should be 'as ignorable as it is interesting', but nowadays it seems to have become 'as unignorable as it is uninteresting'," Love over Entropy says cheekily. "Ambient music really is everywhere, with modern production tools often doing the heavy lifting."

With To Sit Quietly Where Everything is Moving Fast, the producer hopes to make a difference, simply by raising the bar. It's a journey that can be taken both horizontally and vertically, and hopefully offers comfort. Or as the producer describes it: "music that offers a refuge."

It's Christmas Eve and we couldn't ask for a better soundtrack - @tsun_iman is proud to present an exclusive recording of @dj__wiggles's set for Pauze live at De Doelen Rotterdam, last November. It's a beautiful 2-hr mix and we can't wait for you to hear it for the first time.

In Jasmine's words: "This is a live recording from a set I did in Rotterdam for Pauze. I was warming up for Bastian Benjamin’s live set at the beautiful De Doelen building. It was an early evening event and I wanted to create a mostly ambient set which focussed on layering textures. From field recordings & ambient voices to spacious dub, eventually leading into some sleazy house. I love sets like this which really tell a story, it was a joy putting it together."

Founder & curator of event and mix series kinetic, UK-based Dj wiggles has a penchant for all things deep, dark & mystical, often leaning into the more trippy soundscapes of techno and bass-heavy sounds. Incredibly influenced by artists from her formative years, Dj wiggles places huge emphasis on emotionally connecting with a dance floor & UK sounds from the past. More focussed on constructing a set with an energy in mind than genre, her sets and track choices are always interesting and unexpected, paying attention to how a moment makes you feel. Just as likely to be found in a deep & dark basement playing bass-heavy sounds or deep techno, as on a festival stage playing footwork or house - expect the unexpected.

With a year of big UK club debuts such as FOLD & Corsica under her belt, Dj wiggles has also been exploring the European club scene with shows at Wuppertal’s Open Ground, Berlin’s Zur Klappe & PIP Den Haag. With a return to Above Below festival, last summer also saw her debut at UK festivals Field Maneuvres, We Out Here, Twisted, Shambala & Get On, plus Poland’s experimental festival, Gnojki Samba.
