Our 49th SoHaSo podcast is courtesy of Amsterdam-based Anne Korteweg aka https://soundcloud.com/villete. She has been releasing her blissful electronica since 2016, including a very nice addition to our SOMEWHERE IV compilation back in 2020. Korteweg really takes us on a journey on this mix. It starts out puffing, scratching and tingling with the pure joy of ambient textures, before sprinkling bits of dubby electronics and piano motifs on top. Villete demonstrates a keen ear for subtlety, patience and cohesion, weaving tracks together in such a way it feels like they were always meant to be heard in this particular context. All in all, an hour of beautiful meditative music. Thanks Anne!

Here at Stately HQ we love things that are different and how lucky are we to be treated with this amazing set by Milo Bragg. This friendly soul has been the head buyer at the amazing Juno record store for over two decades, which proves once again to be an outstanding source to build an impressive record collection full of gems. Besides his daytime job he is the driving force behind the Future Primitive record label, which has seen a great last release by the legendary Bluetrain (Steve O' Sullivan). The set he provided for us consists of a big chunk of Dub flavors, just how we like it. Thanks so much Milo for the tunes and to all others we say happy listening!

Dusk Delay 018 - Lord Of The Isles

There's a story to this month's podcast, mixed by taste-making Utrecht DJ and Rhythmic Culture mainstay https://soundcloud.com/akaaskmelater. It goes something like this: Back in March last year, just as clubs were reopening, Askmelater (aka Toine) was invited to play Utrecht's infamous WAS. club night. But unfortunately, they caught covid and were unable to make the date (most of us can relate). Stuck at home, Toine channelled both their fever dreams and their frustration at missing out on a good gig in an excellent set of moody breaks and trippy electronica. Almost a year after reopening, this mix is a welcome reminder of what a joy it is to be back on the dancefloor. And with Askmelater at the helm, you know you're in for something special.

This one has been quite some time in the making. https://soundcloud.com/lunaludmila has been a friend of the label for years now, contributing tracks to compilations, playing at SoHaSo takeovers, hanging out, and basically representing Something Happening Somewhere in the best possible way. Her dubbed-out style and meticulous mixing shines through on this hour-long mix. It’s a thick weave of grooves, pads, and basslines that seems to move ever forward. To make these classic elements feel both fresh and familiar is quite an achievement. Thanks Ashley for taking us on this journey.

A journey. That’s how best to describe the story of ace DJ and https://soundcloud.com/vaultwax boss https://soundcloud.com/beyun303. Her bio spans four countries in three different continents, and a family history tying her to even more diverse locales. A true globetrotting citizen of the world, she has taken in influences from a large variety of sources to inform her wide-ranging musical taste. It’s hardly a coincidence she has dropped anchor at the port of Rotterdam, a place which is defined by its diversity and by welcoming travelers from all over the world. 

A journey is also the best way to describe her addition to our podcast series. A truly eclectic mix of genres, moods and moments, we’re taking from energetic breaks and techno thumping, with hints of rave-synths, acid-basslines and plenty of percussion sprinkled in for good measure. And then, just as you think you’ve figured out what Beyun’s all about in this set, she mixes things up. We won’t spoil the ending, so you’ll just have to wait and hear what’s in store (or skip through, if you’re a party pooper).

Aaaah yes, https://soundcloud.com/ultrastation. A rare breed of hybrid live/dj techno animal, always ready to destroy a festival stage, club or warehouse with their furious sets. For this edition of the podcast, these label mainstays have put together a scorching mix of deep rolling grooves and live synths. Having well earned their accolades as individual performers (Nuno dos Santos and Cosmic Force), they perfectly complement each other’s skillset, energy and creativity. After their long-awaited SoHaSo debut last year, they are now busy prepping a new EP whilst burning down festival stages left and right on the weekend. If you like your techno groovy, trippy and loud this one is for you :)

Since 2014, UK-based label, https://soundcloud.com/astralindustries have been responsible for some of the most enlightening and entertaining releases of recent years. Their output has helped otherwise forgotten or out of print music see the light of day, provided new takes on previous classics, whilst also pushing forward new music by some of the most well-respected artists within the ambient genre. 

Debuting with a release by dub-techno legend DeepChord in 2014, Astral Industries went on to release Wolfgang Voigt's live project, Rückverzauberung Live In London in 2015.  In 2016 they followed with a 1985 recording from disbanded dutch collective Chi - a timeless and undoubtedly classic record, whilst in the same year pitching Wolfgang and Deepchord together for the very first time, with reinterpretations of Peter Michael Hamel's classic, Colors of Time. By then, and combined with the continually brilliant artwork of Theo Ellsworth, we knew that Astral Industries was a label with staying-power, and a growing catalog of releases worth collecting - be it just for the framed artwork, or moreover, the complete music package. 

In 2017, we've seen an LP by Heavenly Music Corporation, aka Kim Cascone (likely encouraged by the recent re-release of his own label Silent Records), a third LP by The Chi Factory, and then just last month a beautiful album by Waveform Transmission (Rod Modell of DeepChord and Chris Troy), with a sublime follow-up album, a massive 20 years after their first. 

The man behind the Astral Industries machine, Ario is a proven expert at plucking obscure gems from the past, or ensuring that good music gets the platform and artistic presentation it deserves. In just a few years, Ario has curated a highly respected and anticipated label roster that demands attention, and has yet to disappoint. The music is always gentle, deep and often extremely vivid, be it deeply hypnotic ambient, or gentle murmurs of dub-techno. 

With curatorial talents like this, we're overjoyed to host an exclusive 2hr+ mix of Ario digging into his record collection, and interlocking a few select exclusive Astral Industries bits in-between. It's one hell-of-a hypnotic journey and just like the Astral Industries releases, deserved of your full undivided, escapist attention.
