There's a story to this month's podcast, mixed by taste-making Utrecht DJ and Rhythmic Culture mainstay https://soundcloud.com/akaaskmelater. It goes something like this: Back in March last year, just as clubs were reopening, Askmelater (aka Toine) was invited to play Utrecht's infamous WAS. club night. But unfortunately, they caught covid and were unable to make the date (most of us can relate). Stuck at home, Toine channelled both their fever dreams and their frustration at missing out on a good gig in an excellent set of moody breaks and trippy electronica. Almost a year after reopening, this mix is a welcome reminder of what a joy it is to be back on the dancefloor. And with Askmelater at the helm, you know you're in for something special.

This one has been quite some time in the making. https://soundcloud.com/lunaludmila has been a friend of the label for years now, contributing tracks to compilations, playing at SoHaSo takeovers, hanging out, and basically representing Something Happening Somewhere in the best possible way. Her dubbed-out style and meticulous mixing shines through on this hour-long mix. It’s a thick weave of grooves, pads, and basslines that seems to move ever forward. To make these classic elements feel both fresh and familiar is quite an achievement. Thanks Ashley for taking us on this journey.

A journey. That’s how best to describe the story of ace DJ and https://soundcloud.com/vaultwax boss https://soundcloud.com/beyun303. Her bio spans four countries in three different continents, and a family history tying her to even more diverse locales. A true globetrotting citizen of the world, she has taken in influences from a large variety of sources to inform her wide-ranging musical taste. It’s hardly a coincidence she has dropped anchor at the port of Rotterdam, a place which is defined by its diversity and by welcoming travelers from all over the world. 

A journey is also the best way to describe her addition to our podcast series. A truly eclectic mix of genres, moods and moments, we’re taking from energetic breaks and techno thumping, with hints of rave-synths, acid-basslines and plenty of percussion sprinkled in for good measure. And then, just as you think you’ve figured out what Beyun’s all about in this set, she mixes things up. We won’t spoil the ending, so you’ll just have to wait and hear what’s in store (or skip through, if you’re a party pooper).

Aaaah yes, https://soundcloud.com/ultrastation. A rare breed of hybrid live/dj techno animal, always ready to destroy a festival stage, club or warehouse with their furious sets. For this edition of the podcast, these label mainstays have put together a scorching mix of deep rolling grooves and live synths. Having well earned their accolades as individual performers (Nuno dos Santos and Cosmic Force), they perfectly complement each other’s skillset, energy and creativity. After their long-awaited SoHaSo debut last year, they are now busy prepping a new EP whilst burning down festival stages left and right on the weekend. Dutch artist Bas Dobbelaer, whose star has been shining brightly in recent years, is gracing us with his full-length masterpiece, "Binding Elements," courtesy of the beloved Something Happening Somewhere imprint. This label has been instrumental in nurturing Bas's talent over the years, and it's only fitting that he returns to its fold with a stunning ten-track album that truly showcases his evolution as an artist.

"Binding Elements" is a journey that embodies Bas Dobbelaer's growth and dedication to his craft. The album is an odyssey tailored for moments of introspection or leisurely movement, inviting listeners into dub electronica and ambient worlds. With a deliberate focus on sound design and an unwavering attention to the finer details, Bas Dobbelaer's work on this album is nothing short of a revelation.

Among the tracks on this remarkable album, we are thrilled to premiere "Submerge." This track showcases Bas's ability to create music that feels like a deep expedition into uncharted waters. "Submerge" is an auditory journey where two sequences intertwine and effortlessly hover above a deep, pulsating groove, accompanied by vibrant sub-frequencies that resonate with power. Listening to it, one can't help but feel as though they are witnessing the triumphant return of a submarine, emerging from the depths of an ocean previously unexplored by humanity.

Silent Servant is the primary pseudonym of California electronic artist Juan Mendez, who produces techno with a heavy post-punk/industrial influence. He first began releasing material as Silent Servant during the mid-2000s, when he was a key member of the influential techno collective Sandwell District. Following numerous well-received underground singles, he made a major impact on the techno world with Negative Fascination, his acclaimed 2012 full-length debut. Following Mendez's co-founding of the Jealous God label in 2013, as well as several singles and collaborations with the likes of Marcel Dettmann and Phase Fatale, Silent Servant released his second album, the more overtly EBM-influenced Shadows of Death and Desire, in 2018.  2023 sees Mendez continuing to Play the US and Europe, New releases On L.I.E.S., Tresor and maintaining his sixth year of the Optimistic Decay radio show on NTS.

About his favorite track:
Dana Kelley "House Down," the second-to-last track on this mix. Originally released in 1999, re-issued by Chiwax in 2023. This track is such a hypnotic groove monster. As one user on Discogs aptly describes it, Kelley demonstrates an exceptional skill in controlling the intensity of the music, like a master holding a fierce beast on a tight leash.

Far Out Radio Systems, the brainchild of Belgian producer Thomas Neyens is about to take you on a journey unlike any other. His upcoming album, "Mariana No Death," plunges you into the inky depths of the Mariana Trench, where solace and sonic exploration collide.

This four-track sampler is your first taste of the album's immersive world. It features two album tracks and two exclusive cuts: the pulsating, analog beast "Raingods" and the hypnotic, slow-motion "The Oracle Emile" – perfect for late-night dives.

However, our focus today is on "Inside The Horizon," the opening track of the sampler, and the grand finale of "Mariana No Death." True to Neyens' signature sound, it features warm, analog broken beats, ethereal vocals, and melancholic pads. Clave hits echo in the distance like raindrops, adding a beautiful touch and keeping the rhythm alive. It's a melancholy yet triumphant return for Far Out Radio Systems.

"Inside the Horizon" drops on February 23rd, followed by the full "Mariana No Death" LP on March 22nd via Something Happening Somewhere.
