“NYC-2-Africa-2-Brasil” features two of the world’s top reggae vocalists, Anthony B and Jahdan Blakkamoore, and builds on the NYC-2-Africa project from Subatomic Sound System & Nomadic Wax, an effort to musically connect the roots of NYC hip hop back through Jamaican reggae and then back to Africa. Here it takes another musical journey on an express train to Brasil where three Brasilian based top ranking producers reimagine the tracks from their unique perspective. NYC-2-Africa riddim was written and recorded in New York City, USA; Dakar, Senegal; and Kingston, Jamaica; tracing the roots of African rhythm through Jamaican dubwise dancehall reggae and NYC hip hop.  Vocals by Anthony B and Jahdan Blakkamoore. Music written and produced by Emch and Benny Beats. THE ARTISTS:  Anthony B (Jamaica) & Jahdan Blakkamoore (Brooklyn/Guyana) are two of the world’s most exciting conscious dancehall & roots reggae vocalists. Spearhead by producer, DJ, and instrumentalist Emch, NYC’s Subatomic Sound System is leading a dub music renaissance, founders of the US & Europe Dub Champions Festival, 5 years acting as the live band for legend Lee “Scratch” Perry on tours including Coachella & Red Bull Music Academy; plus independently touring North America, Europe, and Asia, and for a decade producing flavors ranging from classic dub to dancehall to dubstep.  Nomadic Wax is a Brooklyn based hip hop label led by drummer/producer Benny Beats, originally planned to focus on African music but later expanded to produce documentary films like “Democracy in Dakar” linking politics and music, as well as producing events like the International Hip Hop festival in New Haven, Connecticut. At the controls of the Brain Damage project since 1999, and through a rich discography of more than 10 albums, Martin Nathan already explored my facets of his favorite style: the dub. After having contributed to settle its Brain Damage foundations in France, he remains consistently involved in its evolution, suggesting various versions, alternatively urban, atmospheric, experimental, and recently way closer to some models developed in the UK.

This time, that’s in Kingston that he realizes the main part of this new opus, to delve more deeply into the dub origins. His friendship with Samuel Clayton Jr, sound engineer and internationally respected producer (Steel Pulse / Toots & the Maytals) was decisive in the choice of this destination. This essential figure in Jamaica indeed opens the doors of the mythical Harry J Studio (Bob Marley / Burning Spear) to Brain Damage, and enables improbable connections with legendary artists for unforgettable studio sessions.

The initial idea of the project was to involve certain actors of this famous generation that contributed in the 1960s / 70s to create what reggae is, and by extension, the dub. Five veterans of the genre line then up behind Jamaicathe microphone, all contemporaries, but with totally diverse sensibilities and backgrounds. Nowadays still superstar for some of them like Horace Andy whose tone is recognizable miles away, and who is used to collaborate with Massive Attack, kind of forgotten for some others like Kiddus I that yet was, in 1978, the hero if a key scene in the cult film « Rockers », all of them have kept their talents unimpaired. This being the case of Willi Williams, author of the timeless hit « Armagideon Time », covered by The Clash as so many others did, but also of Winston Mc Anuff who Harry J Studio Sessionsnever ceases to amaze us by collaborating with French artists in a marked contrast to reggae vibes (Camille Bazbaz, Fixi, Java). Lastly, the dean Ras Michael, which was for so many years one of the ambassadors of Nyabinghi traditions on an international scale, continues to blow us away by his vocal interventions imbued with so much spirituality, and by this unique style of percussion-playing.

For the span of one studio session, all of them succeed in blending into the musical universe suggested by Brain Damage, and undertake the stylistic exercise submitted by the artist: writing most of their lyrics on the theme of their childhood, the childhood, youth and education. The outcome of these meetings is unique, a singular combination of maturity and genuineness, doubtless resulting from the open-mindedness and talents of each protagonist.

Fyah Bun (feat. Willi Williams)

With his stage name coming from his love of late 60s Jamaican deejay U-Roy and his light skin, U-Brown began his deejaying career as the 1970s dawned. In the mid-70s he began working with major producer Bunny Lee, and soon got a chance to deejay on King Tubby's Hi-Fi. U-Brown's hyped-up version of U-Roy jive-saturated talkover style sounded great over the heavy dubs mixed by Tubby, and he ended up deejaying many of the top sounds in Jamaica from 1970 to 1985. He's continued to deejay and produce ever since.

In-between a few gigs with French sound system Soul Stereo, he came to the Paris DJs studio in december 2014 to cut a few new tracks with producer Grant Phabao, starting with this neo-classic 'Mr. DJ Let The Music Play', recorded on one of Phabao's biggest riddims, the 'Honey' one he had build over the Erykah Badu's hit of the same name.

U-Brown's unmistakeable deejay flow with a stylistic debt to the deejay godfather is a delectation to hear voiced and mixed with Grant Phabao at the controls. Somehow echoing U-Brown's first production in 1977, the 'Please Mr Deejay' hit by Carlton Livingston, 'Mr. DJ Let The Music Play', with its dynamic skanking and shoutouts rocks the dance hall instantly with bubbles of joy exploding from the turntables!
