Schon lange bevor SOLARIS im IfZ Platten auflegte, sogar eine ganze Weile bevor sie überhaupt begann Platten aufzulegen, war der Name Solaris in Leipzig ein Begriff für mehr oder weniger rhythmische Industrialsounds. Zu verdanken ist dies dem schrecklichen Zustand der Leipziger Straßen und Fahrten darauf mit den Bussen des örtlichen Nahverkehrsunternehmens vom gleichnamigen Hersteller. Das Rumpeln, Krachen, Fiepsen und Quietschen, das dabei vernommen werden kann, ist oft gar nicht so weit weg von der Musik, die Iris Hanika im Standard mal als „eine Weiterentwicklung der chinesischen Wasserfolter“ bezeichnete. Aber im Gegensatz zu den Busfahrer*innen beweist SOLARIS dann doch mehr Taktgefühl, mehr Feingefühl für Atmosphäre und weitaus mehr Sinn für Unterhaltung. Deswegen ist es lohnenswert, sich ein paar Minuten in den Bus (oder in die Bahn oder aufs Fahrrad et cetera et cetera) zu setzen, um dann ein paar Stunden zu ihr zu tanzen. Nicht andersherum.

It all happened pretty quickly for Alessandro and Federico Fognini. In 2011, after years of making music in one form or another, the two brothers formed a new DJ and production duo: Mind Against. Two years later they'd moved from Italy to Berlin and had their first record out on Life and Death (Atlant), with another two in the pipeline (Avalon and Strange Days). By then their DJ careers had taken off and they were playing somewhere in the world every weekend. It seems they made quite an impression on their audiences: last December, they debuted in our annual Top DJs poll all the way up at #33. 

Sometimes it's hard to say exactly why an act breaks through, but not with these guys. From the off, Mind Against had a signature sound that was immersive and completely their own: cosmic, emotionally rich and banging when it needs to be. RA.482 shows us an especially subtle side of their sound, with 58 minutes of techno that gently ebbs and flows. (Resident Advisor)

Scene 4’ comes in the form of a rollicking big room techno jam. The monstrous kick sustains momentum as metronomic chimes sit in the back of the stereo field with the occasional swath of metallic tones piercing through. 

‘Scene 4’ is awfully stunning in its brevity and brisk tempo.

Cio Dorbandt is a part of German techno’s furniture. Born in Hannover, she can now be found in Cologne, while over the course of a lengthy career she has stamped her mark on cities across the country, and many other spots further afield. Made a resident at Munich’s infamous Ultraschall in 2001, she had also spent much of her youth pursuing her aspiration to become a dancer in ‘80s Berlin—a place she now frequents for gigs at the likes of Berghain, Tresor, and ://about blank​, following a wave of international recognition in the late ‘00s.

With years of experience behind the decks, studio work came a little later for Dorbandt. Releasing on Prologue, Semantica and more, her sound as Cio D'Or was recognized as central in a wave of minimal, hypnotic techno producers, encompassing characters like Mike Parker, Sleeparchive and Donato Dozzy (with whom she has often worked alongside). More recently, she has turned her attention to a broader spectrum of styles, bouncing between dub and ambient soundscapes, with the focus directed on sound design. Her most recent album, All In All, was some of her most experimental work yet, diving head first into a world of piano composition and cinematic music, as well as the regular dancefloor fodder. Not prepared to confine her talents to record though, she has also orchestrated a choreography project alongside Brigitta Muntendorf entitled PULSA:RE, combining the work of an ensemble with a DJ set—yet another string on her musical bow. D’Or steps up for this week’s podcast, with a dramatic hour long mix of experimental techno sounds that gives a sense of where she is at right now.

A time for celebration.
Tomorrow the light will begin to fade
As the Wheel of the Year
Turns on and ever on.

The sun rises high in the late summer sky
And lights our way even into the night

The light of fire upon the land, the sea, and the heavens

From the west, the mist rolls in
Bringing rain and fog
The life-giving water without which
We would cease to be.

Beneath my feet is the Earth,
Soil dark and fertile
The womb in which life begins
And will later die, then return anew.

This story was translated by an ancient scribe and is told in different ways ways depending on the culture. The chapters have been lost but the story remains intact.

Campfire Stories is a mix series by friends of Silent Season. The focus of the series is on storytelling through deeper electronic music. Artists weave together narratives using the emotional characteristics of ambient and techno music.
