Breaks Of Unknown Vol. 9 - Grade-E

Seann "Grade-E" is a product of the of the legendary Orlando, Fl Rave scene of the early 1990s. Orlando was ground zero for an explosion of DJ and musical talent that defined an era. Seann was lucky enough to witness talented djs like Kimball Collins, D-Xtreme, Dj Stylus, Chris Fortier, Jimmy Van M all Orlando natives, in the original clubs (Aahz, The Abyss, The Edge, Firestone) that spawned a generation and launched their careers. He saw Sasha and Digweed do their first stateside appearance at the now infamous Aahz Nightclub. Hearing all those legends in the heyday of house night after night inspired Seann like so many others to explore his own music interests. In 1994 he pulled together enough money to by two turntables and a mixer. Later the next year he moved to Albuquerque, NM where got the opportunity to DJ at several local clubs and a few desert raves. In 1996 he moved to Washington DC where he connected with local progressive house legend Ty T of "Stellar" which gave him the opportunity to DJ at virtually every club throughout DC and Northern VA metro area, including a residency at "Traxx" nightclub which was DCs longest standing nightly until it closed in 2004. Durning this time Seann was able to DJ along side some of his all time favorite DJs including Dave Seaman, Jimmy Van M, Bill Hamel, Steve Lawler, Noel Sanger, and most notably his local Orlando favorite - D-Xtreme.

In 2000 Seann looked to expand the Stellar brand by founding a record label, aptly named "Stellar Records." In that role Seann built a small boutique record label focused on progressive house and breaks demonstrating his passion for all things progressive. Stellar records lasted 4 years and 15 releases where he signed artists such as Thomas Penton, Noel Sanger, Oko Tek, Manhattan, Remosh, Descent and his own moniker "Undivided Space" which was a partnership with Thomas Penton. Together that released two tracks one of which, "Recovery" was signed to D:Fuse's Mix compilation "For The People."

Recently Seann has been signed to Polytechinc Records with 3 releases planned for this year. Seann has also done remixes for DSUK and RUNE. In the future, Seann continues to learn and explore the world of music production as he focuses on releasing tracks with progressive and breakbeat undertones, always paying homage to his roots as an early Orlando rave kid from many years ago.

Chapter 5 in The Book of Breaks takes a journey through music that brings me back to the turn of the century.  A time when life was full of endless possibility and my interest and passion for electronic music was going full-throttle as I began to discover and understand what seperated quality EDM from the rest.  Theses tracks are reminiscent of Bedrock Breaks, Probspot, Ozgur Can, Luke Chable and others that originated this particular sound around that time.

Solid State Theory, AKA Iain Combe, is a Manchester (UK) based DJ and producer. His journey started on the dancefloors of some of the most legendary club nights in the UK during the early 90s. By 1995, a successful career in DJing began under a number of aliases; mixing a range of genres from house and trance, to hardcore, Drum & Bass and hip-hop –  although it took him well into the next millennia to pay off the finance on those first 1210s and Stanton Mixer!
 
Stumbling across breakbeat and its sub-genre of progressive breaks in the late 90s, SST was further inspired by artists such as Sasha, Ils, Stanton Warriors, and Hybrid. Having created a thirst to start producing, SST sought to bring his own identity to the modern scene. After honing his skills, this passion and desire has witnessed successful launches of tracks such as ‘In Situ’, ‘Broken’ and ‘Final Horizon’.
 
Described as dark and atmospheric, yet often uplifting and emotive, SST's tracks are high quality productions that sound incredible both in nightclubs or to accompany those spectacular Ibiza sunsets and spine tingling times in life. His releases have acquired attention within the DJ circuit, with remixes for Agustin Pietrocola, Nicholas Martinez and Science & Reason having quickly gained industry recognition for SST. His two tracks ‘In Situ’ and ‘Broken’ were on the ‘Best of Morphosis 2021’ album, whilst his tracks ‘Broken’ and 'Final Horizon' have reached number 1 in the Retroid Revive Breaks charts in 2021 and 2022. SST’s ‘Final Horizon’ track was also aired on BBC Introducing Manchester in April 2022!
