An incredible festival, an incredible dance: In the late night steamy heat of the Costa Rican rainforest we Invoked the sacred through sonic alchemy and surrendered to the divine.  This set was the culmination of everything I strive for on the ecstatic dance floor - in the amorphously porous container of a festival a multi genre, tempo-twisted offering of deep groove and penetrating cadence elastically stretched the potential for expression over 108 minutes of unpredictable storytelling as each dancer exploded into the hyper-nowness of being.

DRAGONFLY - SPIRIT CATCHER @ ENVISION FESTIVAL ECSTATIC JUNGLE DANCE 2023

With change in the air and much anticipated wellness on the way it seemed like the right time to create a memento of this recent chapter of life... 

The music woven together in this homebrew is quite sentimental, the exact medicine I never knew I needed until it landed in my body at the right time and interestingly the right pace with most being a similar tempo and tone. 

Each of the tracks were recognised from within as a remedy long before I came to understand their meaning or relevance let alone marinade in their melodies. 

It is only now when I listen back that I come to appreciate the inner intelligence at work here and in turn start to rebuild some trust in my body and it’s ability to heal.

Deep, slow pulsing basslines carry the exotic cargo of sound; pretty and gritty instrumentation, the ululation and trill of womens' traditional vocal techniques, and the swoop of mens' choruses.  North African rhythms shuffle and sway beneath the cresting timbre of taught, bluesy guitars, purposeful sintirs and the cascade of Malian harps (ngonis). Hand-claps and qraqebs (double-ended metal "castanets") chatter  hypnotically around the deep, definitive low end which craft the ethos of this 60-minute journey across the desert cultures of Mali, North Western Sahara, Morocco and Algeria.

The Tuareg inhabit the Saharan regions of North Africa - Niger, Mali, Libya, Algeria and Burkina Faso. From Wikipedia: The origins and meanings of the name Tuareg have long been debated. It would appear that Twārəg is derived from the broken plural of Tārgi, a name whose former meaning was "inhabitant of Targa", the Tuareg name of the Libyan region commonly known as Fezzan. Targa in Berber means "(drainage) channel".[20] Another theory is that Tuareg is derived from Tuwariq, the plural of the Arabic exonym Tariqi.[10]

No one knows the true origin of the Tuareg, where they came from or when they arrived in the Sahara. Birth Unto Death, Death Unto Birth

Solomon’s journey as a DJ and music collector spans overs 24 years, since he discovered electronic music and mixing equipment at the sweet age of 16. In this time he has travelled extensively the east coast of Australia sharing his magic with festival dance floors. His experience shines through in the way he creates almost seamless musical journeys, and consistently brings new sounds to the dance floor.  Since discovering ecstatic dance many years ago, he has opened his heart to the world of dance as medicine. Over the last two years, his focus has been more so on exploring this new found passion and refining his skills to craft very intentional musical treats. A recent highlight was sharing ecstatic dance on main stage at NZ Spirit Festival 2019.  He is excited to be part of Dance Tribe FNQ, both as a DJ and as a lover of exploration through movement and dance.  The intention for these Ecstatic Dance events is to create a form of ritual, a release, an explosion of vibes, joy and freedom, and a celebration of life and what it means to be human.
