Solstice Bells (SB) was born @ 5 North Beacon St., Boston in the Summer of 1994 in the living room of Juan Gomez (Dogsface) apartment, after bass player Luis Valera, member of Dogface’s previous band “Mientrastamos Vivos” (MV) left the band for good.
MV was line up by:
1. Juan Gomez on guitar and vocals
2. Rolando Gonzalez on drums
3. and Luis Valera on bass.
During recording sessions at BCM Studio A, Dogsface and Rolando Gonzalez were working on new material for MV, when Guillermo Hung – an old friend, showed up in the studio with another musician, Jeff Crespo, who would then be invited by Dogsface to participate as a musician in the recordings for MV.
As rehearsals for new material for MV took place on Dogfaces living room, as the band was handicap with a missing bass player, Dogsface made a decision and he took control of the bass and that, brought a new sound and band line up for what would become “Solstice Bells” as he invited Jeff and another friend, Jose Miguel Lopez (Petardo) to join the band on guitars, together with Rolando on drums. Dogsface and Jeff quickly became very good friends and a songwriting partnership was born producing many songs, lots of demo tapes - in and out of SB, and this songwriting partnership will last until Dogsface's departure for good from Solstice Bells a year later. The new name for the band - "Solstice Bells" - was chosen by Jeff from a Jethro Tull song called "Ring out solstice bell".
Funny story is that because we were all Latinos, local clubs would not let us play, (imagine - Latinos playing blues and rock ‘n’ roll, sounded weird but it’s true), so we used to go to the local clubs and fake our names so that way they would let us play:
1. John Gruber on Bass and vocals
2. Jeff Mazaira on guitar and vocals
3. Joe Petard on guitar and vocals
4. Roland Gonz on Drums and vocals
Solstice Bells was the greatest potential unknown band in the 90's in the Boston area and sadly it only lasted 1 year. Old songs that were recorded in that year it’s what is left and it is here now for everyone to listen and enjoy!!!
