A late afternoon thunderstorm grumbles above pristine cloud forest in the highlands of Malaysia. Tree frogs, crickets, squirrels and birds call as the rain begins.

The rainforests of Malaysia are some of the richest on the planet. While several national parks have been established in the country, large areas of primary forest still exist outside park borders, and it's these unprotected forests that are facing rapid & systemic destruction.

In March 2014 I spent a week in and around Taman Negara National Park recording the extraordinary sights and sounds of this stunning area. Sadly, only a few kilometres from park headquarters in Kuala Tahan, extensive areas of virgin forest are being logged and cleared for palm oil plantations. It's a story being played out throughout the world, as governments & corporations see forests as having more value dead than alive.

Recorded from a logging access road adjacent to pristine, primary rainforest, this is a sampler featuring some of the unique & beautiful natural sounds of this precious habitat.

This recording was made at dawn one morning near Lake Eacham, on the Atherton Tablelands. The lush rainforest was filled with sounds of birds  including  Superb & Wompoo Fruit-Doves, Brown Cuckoo-Dove, Golden Whistler, Eastern Whipbird, Spotted Catbird, Bower's Shrikethrush, Brown Gerygone, Grey-headed Robin, Double-eyed Fig Parrot, Bridled & Lewin's Honeyeaters and more....

This is a mix of three recordings- each had issues with noise so I cleaned them up as best I could and mixed them to try & make something nicer to listen to.

The picture is of a Red-legged Pademelon, taken at Mary Cairncross reserve. 



Bird calls mixed with rainforest stream

Experience a walk in an Australian tropical rainforest.

Fruit doves call from high in the canopy, and exotic birds, such as the extraordinary Catbird, may be heard deep in the forest. Later, a restful symphony of night sounds gives way to the dawn chorus in a lush lowland rainforest.

Life abounds in the exotic and beautiful rainforests of Sulawesi - one of the largest islands in the Indonesian archipeligo. Here time has stood still, revealing the evolution of nature through a unique diversity of birds and animals.

In humid lowlands we hear fruit pigeons, orioles, monarch flycatchers and a magnificent pair of hornills. Further inland, hill forests reach deep into the remote heart of the island. The booming calls of imperial pigeons carry across the valleys, squirrels call from high in the canopy and the eerie voices of piping crows echo through the forests.

We climb high into the mountains, the realm of the cloud forests. Flocks of birds move through the forest calling in the morning sunshine. Finally, night falls on a land where mystery and the unusual are everywhere - Sulawesi.

Birdsong echoes from the depths of the forest, and small frogs call from the side of a stream which flows nearby. Eventually we move into a rainforest evening, the air humming with a hypnotic chorus of nocturnal insects.

This album brings you the sounds of rainforests in tropical north Queensland. It features three rainforest habitats, from highland and lowland forests in the region around Cairns.

1. Atherton Tableland Dawn - The soft piping of Grey-headed Robins and the exhilarating songs of Spangled Drongos begin a rich dawn chorus in highland rainforest. The Atherton Tableland has some of the best areas of upland rainforest, and this recording takes us into the heart of it.

2. An Afternoon Rainshower - The approaching tropical rainy season is heralded by a light rainshower. This recording was made in Mobo Crater, a extinct volcanic caldera sheltering verdant rainforest, and features a diversity of mid-afternoon birdsong.

3. The Paradise Kingfishers of Lacey Creek - Fluttering elegantly with their long tail-plumes trailing, we hear Paradise Kingfishers among the dawnsongs of a lowland rainforest. Lowland rainforest is rarer than its mountain counterpart, as much of the coastal country has been cleared, often for sugar cane farms. Lacey Creek, near Mission Beach, is not only a precious remnant, but now a stronghold for the endangered Cassowary.
