Soma continue the SOMA NEU series as Vol 5 follows in Soma's founding ethos of quality electronic music. Each part of the series is meticulously curated and aims to direct the uncompromising vision of the label, directly to the dance floor.

Featuring a lineup of modern and emerging artists, SOMA NEU pays homage to the roots and raw energy of authentic techno and demonstrates its ongoing evolution. Vol. 5 packs in 14 tracks from new and past label affiliates, spanning amient, experimental and dubbed out minimalism to deep atmospheric techno and beyond.

With his first release on Token, Phara conjures up four tracks detailing dancefloor impact with robust personality. In ‘Second Skin’, the Belgian artist is eager for resolution, keeping tension high with the bold analog sound he’s known for. Coming eye to eye with the label’s sound, Phara pays homage to Token while fiercely defending years of artistic direction - layering the label’s astral ambiance with his unstoppable movement.

‘Neon’ is inquisitive and almost spiritual in its effect, playing with the line between a unified dancefloor and an introspective journey.

Porto-based Brazilian artist Marcal pushes on from a high-impact debut on Donato Dozzy and Neel’s Spazio Nero label with his third outing on Enemy Records. Turning in a five-track package on Dustin Zahn’s Berlin-based techno imprint, a new rhythmic confidence underpins his EP Enchant & Deceive. Fans of his, which includes DVS1, Truncate, Rødhåd and Marcel Dettmann, should note his sharpened percussive instincts.

Relocating to Porto from Goiânia in 2024, he’s been releasing on prominent labels since 2020, with Rekids Special Projects and Token Records also signing his cuts. 

Digital bonus ‘Spellbind, combines his signature swing with a robotic, phaser-driven vocal texture, injecting an uplifting, percussive energy.

Following on from the dark intensity of Hash Bar Loops, Deepchord has continued to innovate and diversify his output. Traces of the previous album remain on this record but here, there is a lighter more ethereal feel.

Deepchord’s characteristic manipulation of space and time is still intact and is an integral part of Sommer’s soundscape. Modulating textures, sliding tempos, shifting rhythmic elements, and electroacoustics create a constantly evolving, vaporous sonic-tapestry.

Rich field recordings and proprietary processing methods (developed over 20 years of making such recordings) provide an impactful, living, organic element with flecks of percussion and bass pulsing from the soundfield. Atmospheric warmth and engrossing layers are expertly woven, many of the source-recordings were made on a beach near the artist’s home. Wind chimes, circulating air, and a marine sounds give this album a distinct identity rarely experienced in the sphere of digital music. A rare amalgamation of deep organic-atmospherics and dance music. A living breathing organism, quite unlike anything else. Light and aquatic feeling, with a few darker introspective moments later in the album, but it never gets foreboding or overly heavy. The overall mood here is evocative of warm summer evenings, and is equally effective on a PA with a crowd, as it is on the beachside with headphones alone. 

An August release date coincides perfectly with the album’s themes and will be a powerful addition when played out over the summer and on into the autumn as part of Deepchord’s thoughtful, expansive sets, which should be plentiful in the coming months.
