2011 will see Soma Recordings celebrate their 20th year of releasing stunning and eclectic music from across the electronic spectrum. The label will release a series of singles throughout the year (some vinyl and some digital) , containing remixes of Soma¹s extensive catalogue , including remixes of their big tracks like Silicone Soul’s ‘Right On , Right On’ and Scott Grooves’ ‘Mothership Reconnection’ (famously remixed, previously, by Daft Punk), Funk D’Void’s ‘Diabla’ and H-Foundation’s ‘Tonight’ to name a few. These releases culminate in a CD box-set released in September, containing a collection of their favourite remixes, ‘Hidden Gems’ from Soma’s 20 back-catalogue and also several exclusive tracks and DJ mixes, including one by Label co-founders SLAM.
Many of the remixes come from producers we admire and respect, be them break-through artists or long-standing pioneers. Alongside our own artists, some of the producers involved in celebrating our 20th Anniversary include Loco Dice, Christian Smith, DJ Sneak, Radio Slave, Pan-Pot, Claude VonStroke, Nick Curly, Andrew Weatherall plus a many more still to be announced.
The first EP comes with an almighty set of remixes of Universal Principles and Eastmen from Loco Dice, Santos and Soma’s own Decimal.

Tuskegee Music was launched in May of 2014 by House Music dignitaries Seth Troxler and the Martinez Brothers. As a ‘label of cultural heritage’ the intention is to package up 90’s-minded 12”s that reach into the heart of Paradise Garage and shed a light on a fertile period of influence in dance music’s history. 

Now - a year on from its inception - Tuskegee Music follow up releases from William Kouam Djoko, the label heads themselves and their recent VA release that featured Ibellini, Jesse Colosso and Filsonik with the first solo EP on the label from head honcho Seth Troxler. 

Adding to a gleaming back catalogue that’s touched Crosstown Rebels, Wolf & Lamb and Hypercolour, Seth offers up ‘Just Back’ - a brooding 2-track EP that demonstrates perfectly his ability to control tension to rapturous effect and finally satisfies the vehement anticipation bubbling between his peers with what’s set to be Seth’s biggest and most important record to date.

It’s both ironic and fitting that one of our final releases of the year is called, “The Future”. Created by Tom Flynn and featuring the vocals of Detroit’s illustrious artist, Amp Fiddler, the track carries the obvious name connotation, and the magnificent and dreamy piano leads accompanying the subdued and consistent beats is also a sound that hasn’t been prevalent in the label’s past, but a sign of the diversity to come.

Claude VonStroke loved the song so much that it inspired him to offer his own interpretation, fueling a driving experience by Amp’s perfectly placed vocal bits.

The Future is officially now.

Mihai Popoviciu delivers his third album and 6th release of his already long career via Poker Flat Recordings. The unassuming producer and DJ from Cluj, Romania (where he still lives), has earned plaudits from fellow producers and dancers alike, releasing on the likes of Highgrade, Desseous, Bedrock and his own label, Cyclic. 

Motion Manifold is a bold expression of his craft - each track shot through with that instantly recognisable Popoviciu texture and vibe.  This is an album experience rather than a collection of dancefloor cuts - although it works in that respect also - its 10 tracks give off a sense of completeness that demands re-listening. 

Milky starts it off - a crisp, bouncy groove sets the tone before a deep subby bass and a delicious melodic line arrives. Understand maintains the deepness - a submerged groover that skips along via Popoviciu’s slick sense of drum programming and less-is-more approach. Double Clap is a notch harder, taking us deeper into the club. The groove is augmented with some juicy 303 moments, and deft use of vocal samples.

Popoviciu’s strong love of house chords and deep textures are evident in much of the album, not least in Going Around and Apricot.  Sleepwalking has a dirty basement feel - the loopy bass and acid lead synth add a hypnotic, late night vibe to proceedings. 

In contrast, Later That Day and El Classico are more uplifting cuts, seemingly meant to be experienced in the sunshine, and featuring highly infectious percussion and a warm, positive vibe. 
 
Cosinus sails close to Larry Heard territory, with a grooving, atmospheric bassline and fizzing, emotive synths and pads. Last up, Chrome ends the album in perfect style - another example of pristine sounding deep house that rolls out smoothly from the speakers.
