A couple of times a year I put on these sessions in my basement, where I set up 4 speakers in a circle, invite a few friends over, and we lie down and dissociate in the cosy darkness for an hour while listening to a surround sound mix I made for it.

I usually do a mix of mine and other people's ambient, drone and field recordings, plus some fucked up granular panning shit just to throw a spanner in the works (big up the refractalizerrrr, thanks Ben). Minutes long crossfades. Sometimes quiet, sometimes loud with harmonic mixing when I can. Uplifting but abstract. I try to leave some empty space and not let something too unsettling go on toooo long.

I'm sharing this one cos I think it's the best one I've done, and I hope you can get something out of it. There are two versions. One a binaural mix (this one) and a 4 channel surround one split into two stereo files (Front-Left Front-Right and Rear-Left Rear-Right) that you can find below.

If you want help with the 4 channel setup DM me. I would just drop the two files into ableton and put the first to out 1+2 and the second to 3+4. To get the right volume skip to the loudest part and set it based on that. You don't wanna have to do that half way through, trust me.

There is little chance what is written here is not mainly a silhouette of Dosage’s own words. One of the most quietly talented artists in Bristol, otherworldly visualist and member of the city’s anteconstructed trance-futurists Maximum Euphoria, this mix is coloured by a time I cannot myself remember. Not purely paean, we find Dosage redrawing the electro house of the century’s first couple decades, contemplating anew fidget and complextro and EDM in the smeared sincerity and beating irony of deconstructed club.

Influenced by years in his adolescence and early twenties of DJing London free parties and the aesthetic thereof (snapbacks, slack vests and rigs cast in an iridescent glow), the mix is certainly a celebration of this music. Masterfully attentive to drops billowingly detumescent, hadal basslines sewing spine and soundwave, Dosage maintains a mood never of a trickster’s acmeic accelerationism… there is always something subsurface here. A world unseen for it is carried by by beats too pure and brief and constant than for language. But a world visible for the continuity of drums and the continuance of the glints of crackling glitch and synths subtly shifting in tone, and for the voices that sermonize to us nothing. A historian needs not be an evangelist. And a historian knows there is no such thing as a limitable past. Dosage paints with love, and it is in that painting that nostalgias to-come, recrudescences of untrammelled emotion, earnestly puckish abrasion… all tenets of the club avant garde’s now are illustrated as electro’s present past. It is this blended time that Dosage tells.
