Myosin-III is a protein responsible for the functioning of stereocilia – the hairs of the hearing cells in our cochlea. Mutations in the myosin-III coding gene cause the protein to mis-develop and lead to hereditary hearing loss. 

This is a sonification piece of the Human myosin-III protein, where protein sequences of the healthy and mutated gene are sonically juxtaposed. Following the two protein sequences parallelly – the healthy (L channel) and the mutated (R channel) – we encounter a sonic shift with every amino acid misalignment. As the piece progresses and the mutation count rises, the correlated sequences get more and more misaligned, leading to an increasingly degraded sense of pitch, rhythm, and amplitude.   

The piece aims to give insight into how even miniscule genetic misalignments result in a radical cascading change of perceptive and functional meaning.

For episode #11 of MJU Residency we've got a duo of Adomas Palekas (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Elif Gülin Soğuksu (Istanbul, Turkey). Two equally interesting experimental music artists exploring human-machine interfaces and sonic storytelling. Music, for both of them, is a medium of immense emotional potential which can only be harnessed subconsciously through performance and direct dialogue with the listener. Having met in the Hague while studying in the Institute of Sonology, Adomas and Elif now tour Europe with these improvised livesets you'll be hearing in the show.

MJU Residency is a show that highlights alternative music and musicians coming from Eastern Europe, exploring the uniqueness of this area of the world and making it more visible worldwide.
