“This mix is made with so much love, featuring so many of my favorite tracks that I saved specifically for Somersault Records, including artists such as Le Tigre, Daphni, Odyssey and Gorillaz. I have been saving it for so long and it has truly been a labour of love. 

Laila Amira is a BK-based DJ who loves to create genre-fluid electronic mixes, drawing upon her love for disco, house, techno, and electro music. Moved by the tracks she has heard across NYC nightlife, she hopes to curate a world through music where people can escape their realities. The connections and feeling of elation Laila has experienced on the dancefloor constantly inspires her to create the same for her listeners. She is also the host of Made In The Club (M.I.T.C) on Newtown Radio, where she discusses important parties, people, and records that influence the dance music landscape today.”

Look around today’s musical mainstream, and you’ll quickly realized that dance styles are everywhere, filling stadiums, topping charts, and gathering tens of thousands in festivals around the country. Yet few know their full history. “Roots and Future” explores how a community of (primarily) black British musicians, fans, D.J.s, and radio pirates recreated dance music in the United Kingdom during the 1990s and 2000s.

Connected to the musical mainstream during 1989’s drug and rave fueled “second summer of love,” these  musicians learned to combine American hip-hop, dancehall toasting, dub bass, and techno euphoria to create style after chart-topping style, from drum-twisting jungle to the slick sounds of garage, the ferocious rhythms of grime, and the all-encompassing low-end of dubstep. We’ll speak to legendary pirate radio D.J.s, underground label owners, and groundbreaking producers. We’ll check young M.C.s spitting their bars on illegal frequencies, and hear veterans playing to their beloved audiences. And most importantly? We’ll rave. See you on the dance floor.

She is a 2018 resident at Smartbar; runs the club nights Rosebud at Berlin Nightclub & Ariel’s Party at Hideout & is one of the residents of Rumors. Her debut EP 'Cyst' was released on Boukan Records in September. Other releases on Club Chai, SHXME, Femme Culture, Pedicure Records (with performance group WITCH HAZEL), & with club personality Imp Queen.
