Hamburg duo Hauke Freer and Matthias Relling aka Session Victim return to Delusions of Grandeur with their second long player, 'See You When You Get There'.

Right from the start it's clear Session Victim's way with a groove hasn't diminished in the two years since their debut album, 2012's 'The Haunted House of House'. ‘Do It Now’ and ‘Hey Stranger’ open the record with the duo's trademark blend of subtle sampling, gloriously swinging beats and the same off-kilter sensibility that consistently raises them above their modern disco peers.

The new album marks a conscious progression in Freer & Relling's approach, evolving the sample-based production style that's won them plenty of fans since their emergence in 2008. Whereas their debut album was recorded in the duo's bedrooms, the new LP instead sees them embracing a full studio set-up, split between their own Hamburg-based studio and the fully-kitted out Room G studio in San Francisco.

Despite being situated in one of the USA's most beautiful locations, the duo found little time for anything outside the work at hand. Time not spent in the studio saw them raiding the two-dollar bins of Amoeba Music for interesting records to sample. "Having access to a fully-equipped studio was like hitting the jackpot. It was a bit intimidating too - we thought 'if we cannot write the LP here, it’s not in us'. A few days later we already forgot about this and were immersed in jamming and exploring," says Hauke. "We had access to all sorts of 80s drum machines, synths and fender rhodes of course that added another layer to the whole thing."

The resulting LP is as expected one that suits a variety of moods within SV's idosyncratic range - from the dancefloor thrills of the piano-led Never Forget, the classic disco percussion & filtered guitar licks of Stick Together and the heads down groove of The Most Beautiful Divorce Ever to the more laid back jazz tempos of Hyuwee and Crystal Maze, while the record also has a place for the more oddball moments of Under Your Spell and Eos Place. ‘See You When You Get There' finds Session Victim at their best yet, with an accomplished album that will likely emerge as one of 2014's strongest in its field.

The ring master’s voice booms through the arena’s speakers. “Ladies and Vagabonds. Round Three just kicked off and both teams seem bent on wrapping this up with brute force. The Good Guys seem to be cornering their malevolent adversaries there, but wait! a swift jab to the jaw and Team Decent hits the canvas...

Rising talent Tell (Beat-x-Changers, Banoffee Pies) from Paris handles the opening play for the Good Guys on the third missive of the fledgling Quartet Series imprint. Tell seems to confirm Paris is rapidly reclaiming its former status as a hotbed for raw and moody house music by offering up a delectable blend of lavish chords, distorted sounds and melancholic vocals. Darko Kustura (Pole Jam, What’s in the Box) throws in some additional punches for the Good Guys. The Croation beatsmith might not be the most prolific but made a name for himself with an amazing ep on Legendary Sound Research under his Teleskop moniker and treats the crowd to a wobbling groovy baseline and sugary sweet chords.

Being Bad can be a good thing sometimes as well. The dark side has cookies, after all. Mancunian Loz Goddard (Dirt Crew, Outplay, Razor-n-Tape) steps out of his comfort zone and delivers a sonic uppercut with a mad piece of swinging acid. Accompanying him on the team is our Hungarian BAL 5000 (SPIEL) who flexes his acid muscle to disorientate and a dubby bass to sedate. The acid is his, but he’s willing to share.

All in all we’ll have a very interesting fight ahead of us. DING DING!
Quartet Series is a fresh imprint, run by Maurits Verwoerd (Nachtbraker), with four releases in the pipeline, featuring four different artists and commissioned storyboard comics on the sleeve. The cold air blew coarsely through the winter night. She could feel it in her bones as she walked beneath the glow of the office blocks and the dim glow of streetlights. As she looked around people came and went, faceless and blurry they were but mere reflections which moved in between the dark and shadowy spaces. The concrete upon which she tread was glazed in water from the rain which had poured all day long. She could almost catch a glimpse of herself when looking at her feet in the shine of the damp. She kept on walking through the night until she saw the light again once more. It was safer that way. 

Books is the next artist to release music on XVI. He delivers three tracks of elegant, enchanting house music which accompany the dark nights of winter very well.
