Sometimes I'm asked to describe my sound in a few words. Trying to describe my sound is a task I don't enjoy doing and actually something, as a DJ, I hope I'm never able to do. If I *can* describe my sound, I take that as a sign that I've constrained myself or gotten too comfortable with what I'm doing. The moment I realize I'm artistically comfortable is the moment I start to get artistically uncomfortable. As of late, I've been starting to get a little too comfortable, so this mix is a response to that.

This mix doesn't come completely out of left field - for the most part, I hold on to a sound I'm known for: melodic, deep. But I take a step out of the comfort zone for a chunk of the mix and explore "underwater," touching on the stripped, trippy, percussive side of house music. I even stepped out of my technical comfort zone for some time layering 3, and at one point, 4 tracks at the same time.

As a whole, this mix transports itself in 3 likenesses: chugging on land, swimming underwater, and flying in the sky. A swan is one of the few animals that can do the same, so I present you, A Swan's Song. Hope you enjoy.

Standing On One Side

Life is all about balance. There is no light without darkness, there is no day without night, there is no good without bad … the yin and the yang. This mix explores these concepts and inspired me to start a podcast, or mix series, based on the yin and yang theory of life. The first edition to this series explores sounds that I love, but if you were to remove these tracks out of the mix and compare them to each other most would sound totally different emotionally. I think there’s something beautiful about that. This one leans more towards the Yin side of the theory … a little dark, a little earthy, deep, and great for winter weather. At the same time you will find beauty, light, and calmness within it. It has everything from deep house, techno, and rock to everything in-between. This is why the yin and yang theory inspired me to begin a series of mixes to express the various types of sounds I love so much and how they are all related to each other. I hope you enjoy the first edition <3

"I have no words to explain the mix of feelings and emotions I felt when I received the invitation to play at White Ocean. Knowing all my favourite DJs and producers, including some of my biggest inspirations and idols would be there as well, made the experience the biggest honour of my musical career to date.

 The reality of this opportunity did not set in until I was finally up on the decks getting ready to hit the play button… 

After struggling for a few years to obtain my US visa, sharing this moment with the White Ocean family on the first night of my first Burn was surreal.

This is my small, yet very meaningful contribution to the stage I’ve always loved and admired. The memories of that night will be forever in my heart. I still dream of that beautiful crowd, and the energy of that night.

The 27nd Podcast is made by Steffen Kirchhoff (Berlin / Germany).

Steffen is a musician throughout. At an early age he learned to play the
guitar and performed in his school band. Later, he came in contact with
electronic music, which led to the first steps in producing his own
music on the computer and performing short live sets. During his years
at university, he became friends with Christian Löffler who deeply
influenced and inspired him to find his own unique style of deep
electronic soulful music. After a year with no music production at all,
Steffen has now phoenixed in 2016 to reach a whole new level of deepness
and spirituality in his compositions. His tracks contain organic and
spiritual elements like shaman drums, holy chants and field recordings
that reflect the beauty of nature. He enjoys playing DJ-Sets as much as
his own Live-Sets. Lately he started focusing on working together with
shamans and healers and supports them at workshops, rituals and
healing-sessions with his Sound. He cuurently explores the freedom and
abunDance and challenges of a nomadic live-style since he decided to
only act on his highest excitement which is music and spirituality and
so he always tries to listen to his heart , follow his intuition and to
go with the flow which leads him to travel a lot and meeting many great
artists to be inspired by and to collaborate with.

I've recently been reminded of the importance of space and solitude. Moments carved out to process, think, and be honest with myself. This mix is inspired by that recent reminder. It's designed to be heard alone, undistracted, and deep in thought. At least, that's how it resonated most for me.

This is a heady mix. Opening at 130bpm, toying with broken beats, and dodging the easy melodic hooks (with some exceptions, of course), I worked to step outside my comfort zone, which was as much challenging as it was artistically satisfying.

I do hope you enjoy it, but to be fully honest, this one's for me...

For our #005 podcast we bring you yet another Brazilian artist, this time from Minas Gerais. 

Maco Maltauro (@maltauro) brings roots from world music aligned with electronic beats to create a sonic trip on the dance floor. 

He began his career in 2014 as a DJ and party host in South Minas Gerais, Brazil. He’s the founder of @Zonazen party having the goal of taking his sound and culture to places where musical manifestation can lead to multicultural interaction.
Nowadays, He has been working as DJ and producer as well as taking part in radios and podcasts. 
His songs are released by labels such as @CasaCaos (Brazil) and Cassette Blog @kct (Mexico).
He uses a laptop, controllers and decks. Working with softwares like Traktor Pro and Ableton Live.
He's played in clubs and parties such as: Casa 92, Mundo Pensante, Holle Clube, TRakes, La Casa ,VOODOOHOP , Pilantrage, Festa Psicodélica Genérica, Realce, Debut - Quintas da Torre, Índigo Vision, Holi Colors, Hipnotica.

Kuumba is a project by Estefano and Mariel, psychologists who focus their curiosity on the human body, specifically on movement and its effect on self awearness. They explore with rhythms, frequencies, and share their discoveries in movement workshops open to all audiences.

Their sets explore rhythms of African and Latin American roots that are sometimes accompany by live percussion. Kuumba leads you from a high bpm afro house to the lowest tropical bass and cumbia reworks. 

This set was recorded live at an ecstatic dance experience that took place in Mexico City. Tracks were selected wisely for the audience that was fully committed to dance.
