When we began the Something Slow gatherings in Beate Uwe, Berlin 2015, we had no other place to go for our favourite slower sounds - we craved a cuddly friendly space where elevated music is the star. Our strict meritocratic booking style surprised some people, but we insisted on choices based on our own personal connection to the music, and so our beloved weekly gathering came to be loved and talked about - "Something Slow" became the place to debut slow music and to meet like minded slow lovers.

After 2 years of passionate slow loving at Beate Uwe, before times changed and our parties began travelling through Berlin and the rest of the world, slow raves had begun popping up all over and slow "downtempo" music became a genre that people were talking about more and more. 

Slow music artists are now in global demand at clubs, festival dance floors and online for any time of day. Artists like Viken Arman, Monolink, Ninze & Okaxy, DWIG, Powel, Troja, Mimi Love, Rampue, Mira, Arutani, YokoO, Iorie, Jacob Groening, O/Y, Niju, Just Emma, Kleintierschaukel, Stephanie Szankay amongst hundreds of others have played for us over the years. We are SO PROUD and JOYFUL that they have been so successful in bringing their unique and soul-warming music to the world!

With the party on pause, we gotta keep the music on play.

The brand new single “Nice Place, Bad Intentions” is the title track to @lucamusto’s full LP, which will drop in October. 

The Berlin-themed album follows two characters, Mick & Richie who are all about the party and bullshit. As they stumble through some of Berlin’s most infamous places, their expectations repeatably clash with the reality of the capital’s night life. Yet, the soundtrack underlining their journey never disappoints and brings the listener on a rhythmic trip of old and new sounds. Scratched hooks meet original lyrics and melodies, resulting in Musto’s distinctive genre-bending tunes. This becomes apparent in “Nice Place, Bad Intentions,” the first release of the album. Reminiscent of 90s/00s Hip Hop, this track takes a twist on Downtempo electro and fuses the grooves of both.

The sound of the swell becomes increasingly rhythmic, and one gently recognizes the sound of a deep and melancholy melody. The light begins to dance on the surface of the sea and the whole scene is transformed into a picturesque view of bright colors paired with warm feelings.

Our loyal companion Lui Mafuta is responsible for this beautiful journey. The whole EP turned out to be a wonderful trip, refined with the help of Daniel Hokum, Niju and Tlazohtla. A big thank you goes out to all the musicians, our artwork hero Kilian Van De Water and Haunted Water for the lovely mastering.

The Magic Movement imprint delivers ‘Mind At Large’ this July, a compilation compiled by label founder Noema and featuring the likes of Acid Pauli, Geju, Landikhan and more.

The Magic Movement : ‘’In 1954, Aldous Huxley introduced the concept of „Mind at Large“ to help interpret psychedelic experiences. According to this concept, the human mind filters reality under normal circumstances while psychedelic drugs remove the filter, exposing the user to a Mind at Large.

In our new release, label boss Noema selected 15 tracks to help you open these doors of perception. Furthermore, this compilation showcases the rich musical spectrum of The Magic Movement, from ethnic Downbeat and midtempo Indie Dance to uptempo House Music, always with a psychedelic touch and a lot of love for the detail. The compilation is structured like a DJ set by Noema. It starts hypnotic and slow, then continuously increases the tempo until it reaches ecstatic upbeat domains: Our journey begins with uplifting and funky Downbeat by KÖNI in an edit by Noema, El Remolon, Bliz Nochi, Geju and a dubby 80’s disco bonanza by The Oddness.
After a side trip to South America and Spain, featuring future-RnB rhythms by Landikhan with Dat Garcia and the driving electronic cumbia dancefloor bomb by Nat Barrera in a Noema edit, we catch our breath during some more minimal and hypnotic tracks by Y.Loh, Acid Pauli and Kermesse in a Xique-Xique remix.

Now in the mid-tempo range, we explore a playful and super groovy jam by Sabda, as well as a shiny track by Kermesse and the marching drums of Noema & Dandara. In the last section, we go upbeat with Future-Jazz-House by Wilde See until we take off to the grand finale, a superb House Music sunset anthem by Serpoosh & Noema. And as Huxley points out, “The man who comes back through the Door in the Wall will never be quite the same as the man who went out. He will be wiser but less sure, happier but less self-satisfied, humbler in acknowledging his ignorance yet better equipped to understand the relationship of words to things, of systematic reasoning to the unfathomable mystery which it tries, forever vainly, to comprehend”

Inspired by the flora and fauna of our planet, Sign Libra’s productions invoke lush, magical dreamscapes. In 2016 the Latvian RBMA alumna released her ‘Closer to the Equator’ EP digitally via Sounds of the Dawn and now the excellent French label Antinote is blessing us with a physical version of the record. We’re excited to host the second track from the EP, entitled “Mantodea vs. Furcifer Pardalis,” a beautiful concoction that Sign Libra also played for us in the participant introduction round at the 2016 Academy in Montréal. Since she provided us with an evocative description of her own track, we can’t help but to share that with you as well in full:

“Living in trees and bushes, animals must hide themselves well from predators and be skillful hunters. One of such masters of ambush and mimicry is the praying mantis. Well camouflaged and lighting up quickly, this insect is a highly efficient predator, but it has a worthy enemy – the panther chameleon. Its camouflage is exceptional because it can change skin colour to match its surroundings. During the hunt the chameleon’s eyes move independently to spot prey. It creeps towards its victim until it unleashes a super weapon – its tongue, which shoots out at a speed of 15 meters per second and not only hits but grasps its target…”

Nick Smith breaks cover from the sanctuary of his Clandestino guise and makes a long-over due, yet welcome return to his solo project as he delivers a humid, intoxicating EP for Phil Cooper's NuNorthern Soul outfit. 'Waves Take Hold' consists of three atmospheric recordings that richly mine influences from early Nineties utopian Iberian dance-floors to far away exotic islands. Here we spotlight the breezy 'Palm Cove'; languid hand drums marry with gentle marimbas as Nick's love of New Age motifs come to the fore. Delicate strings sit in the background while subtle field recordings add to the genteel atmosphere, perfectly capturing the ambiance. A summer highlight for sure.
