'In this mix I’ve used recordings from street level Nepal and India combined with sounds from the natural world as well as music to explore the idea that sound is rarely heard on its own but is always blended with other sounds. 

As humans, we constantly negotiate space for ourselves without taking in to consideration the needs of all life, in the way we did in the past… perhaps we can be more inclusive in the future. 

Many of us are now City-dwelling, our lives the backdrop to an already noisy soundscape. Sound is messy, chaotic, and we’ve trained ourselves to turn down the volume on the natural world as it no longer serves a purpose in terms of our survival .We tune in to the noises that are familiar and relevant to modern living and in doing so we are unconsciously disconnected to the sounds of nature; birds (dawn chorus*), insects and other animals whose habitats coexist in our shared spaces.

The sentiment of this mix has been partly inspired by the film Aluna, where we learn from the Kogi people of Colombia, who are an indigenous ethnic group that live in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains in northern Colombia. 

Many Kogi Mama (a selected few) are raised in darkness for their formative years to learn to connect with this cosmic consciousness and, vitally, to respond to its needs in order to keep the world in balance. The Kogi understand the Earth to be a living being, and see humanity as its "children." They say that our actions of exploitation, devastation, and plundering for resources is weakening "The Great Mother" and leading to our destruction. Through deep concentration, symbolic offerings, and divination, the Mamos believe they support the balance of harmony and creativity in the world. 

*The dawn chorus occurs when birds sing at the start of a new day. In temperate countries this is most noticeable in spring when the birds are either defending a breeding territory, trying to attract a mate, or calling in the flock.'

Being able to be assumed as the most radical humankind's intervention in the landscape, the city is generically a cluster of buildings, processes and people. According to United Nations, almost two-thirds of the world's population will live in cities by 2050. Thus, cities are the places where people live most of the time, but they should not be understood only as material urban heritage, otherwise, where would the driving forces coming from solidarity social relations fit in? Modestly, we took the theme of cities as an incentive to venture into the real world experiences and to celebrate the label's fifth year anniversary date. The compilation maintains the weekly release format and has three sub-themes: 'manhã' (morning), 'tarde' (afternoon) and 'noite' (night). Each one bringing the interpretations of the artists to the different situations of the city as the activities unfold during a whole day.

To a limited extent, humans depend on cities for the civilizing process. The space where people move, whether by car or on foot, is the dizzying essence of all this cultural dimension that allows the humanization of cities. It is the space where we meet, where we dream, where we sit, where we talk, where we express ourselves collectively. Stage for everyday life and also for funerals, processions, demonstrations, big parties. The joys and pains are inside the houses but they also have their projections flying over the cities, stimulating diverse movements towards the union of contrasting communities. Therefore, the compilation's intentions are focused on the nuances between Urbanism, Anthropology, Urban Sociology and any themes that we have omitted here for lack of words or knowledge.

When getting the chance to get away from the hectic race of the day, nighttime is the right time for some and in the cities is a judgment free-zone. Perceptive, mysterious; darkness gives people a way to hide from the prying eyes of others, even if at home or in the urban fabric. Also, gives people an intense desire to walk out, hanging out and nightclubbing as a form of escapism from everyday life. During the late night, the city is quiet with a stillness in the air. Without all the bustle and noise, occasional silence, lullabies to the tired eyes. We rest our heads in pillows every night, sometimes with regrets and sometimes proud to do what we have done. Meanwhile, in homeopathic doses, the city weaves under the influence of dreams a tangle of pressing real life responsibilities that need to be fulfilled before the morning sun rises. Dream, baby dream!

Maco Maltauro feat. PH Lopes — Matilha

Currently based in Istanbul, the live act and music producer Ejder Kazar chooses music as the best way to interpret life. Although Armenian, he has been exploiting his life to the utmost on the majestic city that spans Europe and Asia. In his childhood, Ejder started being passionate by break dance, part of the hip hop culture created by African Americans and Latinos in the 1970s in New York, and as being born in a different 'geography' he always felt a vertiginous crush on South America. Influenced by Middle Eastern societies and inspired by history and nature, Ejder Kazar performs his music in a society that lives in a comparative synthesis between the new and the old, thus, he blends the mysterious spirit of the Middle East with the digital world.

Nowadays, everything is a reference, including the literature that lends its ideas to other arts. Thus, using as initial inspiration the book 'Cien Anons de Soledad' (One Hundred Years of Solitude) by acclaimed Colombian political activist writer Gabriel Garcia Marquéz, Ejder gently interweaves the fantastic and painful history of the Buendías, generation after generation, with the weight of the past, the dream's future and imaginative flights of fantasy in order to create his debut EP, which takes the book's title. However, the producer goes under his own course without pretense, and honestly the book's inspiration is just one of the many directives taken by Ejder when crafting the three tracks.

As in the book, things never stop happening and time abruptly ceases only after the final line, final second in this case. Flashbacks of matters past and long leaps towards future events are represented in the EP by voices that lead into the inseparability of past, present, and future. Besides, seeking to give wider exposure to the raw, 'urbancholy', grassroots sound of Ejder's influences, the EP is also delineating contrasting sections and developing peaks and valleys, always surrounded by ghostly collages, organ tones swimming in and out through a stereo chillout exotica, topped with Ejder’s reflective, anachronistic filter into something that feels almost like storytelling.

In the opening track 'Hotel Ritmo', echoing and overlapping voices open up a charged development, having as a conductor the lack of modesty to explore the low frequencies cyclical. In turn, the second track 'Días Después del Amanecer' contrasts and adds a more progressive atmosphere, while still showing timid and absorbed, using mainly noisy interludes to sew between the most loaded stretches of elements. The similar dynamic echoes across the last track 'Instrumento del Cielo', however more optimistic and made up with an intensity marked by its on-point simplicity. 

So, trying to use his creations to make parallels with our own existence, the singular and enigmatic Ejder Kazar approaches investigations into mysterious matters. From solitude as psychological theme, as much as geographical; a tendency to withdraw into a place where the fantastical and the everyday coexist and mingle without clear lines of division. Passionate without being melodramatic, uncomplicated yet filled with warmth and honesty.

The Bamileke are a Grassfields people. They are the largest ethnic group in Cameroon and inhabit the country's West and Northwest Regions. The Bamileke are regrouped under several groups, each under the guidance of a chief or fon. They speak a number of related languages from the Eastern Grassfield branch of the GrassField language family. These languages are closely related, however, and some classifications identify a Bamileke dialect continuum with seventeen or more dialects. The Bamileke people are known for their very striking and often intricately beaded masquerades, including the impressive elephant mask. Masquerades are an integral part of Bamileke culture and expression. They are donned at special events such as funerals, important palace festivals and other royal ceremonies. The masks are performed by men and aim to support and enforce royal authority. The power of a Bamileke king, called a Fon, is often represented by the elephant, buffalo and leopard. Oral traditions proclaim that the Fon may transform into either an elephant or leopard whenever he chooses. An elephant mask, called a mbap mtengis a mask with protruding circular ears, a human like face, decorative panels on the front and back that hang down to the knee and are covered overall in beautiful geometric beadwork including much triangular imagery. Isosceles triangles are prevalent as they are the known symbol of the leopard. Beadwork, shells, bronze and other precious embellishments on masks elevate the mask's status. On occasion, a Fon may permit members of the community to perform an elephant mask along with a leopard skin, indicating a statement of wealth, status and power being associated with this masquerade.
