This insightful poem written by Paul Watt opens the premiere of the intriguing contribution Zillas On Acid provided to this remarkable release: “Shelter Me – The Album”, coming soon on Paisley Dark, brought together twenty tracks made with love by twenty wonderful acts such as Steady State, Duncan Gray (SXDNS075), From Beyond, MAN2.0 (SXDNS081), Ivan De La Rouch & Rams, Silicodisco, besides the Zillas themselves, just to name a few, in order to raise funds to support the work made by The Shelter UK (https://www.shelter.org.uk/). 

The track we chose to premiere presents itself giving the impression it is a peak time 132-BPM banger, and it keeps hiding its true self until it reaches 02.45 minutes, that’s when you realize its actual pace: “Island Avenue” is a 106 BPM acid downtempo beauty devoted to making us not only dance but also reflect about housing justice and homelessness, issues that afflict millions of people around the world.

PREMIERE334 // Zillas On Acid - Island Avenue

Alex Wastnidge, better known as From Beyond, has been running a quite busy year so far. Having appeared on Mélopée, Boite Music, Paper Disco, and NEIN Records, the high quality of the originals and collaborations of the London/Oslo-based producer is the reason why he is one of the most solicited acts amid the Indie Dance/Nu Disco scene. He is now back on NEIN with “Datamaskin”, a five-track EP presenting three comely originals and two winsome remixes made with love by Velax and Uncommon.

The track we were solicited to review/premiere comes from the creative mind of Alex Twitchy aka Velax. For his interpretation of the title track, the young and rising artist decided to open the Pandora’s box of his darkest influences and twist the original as much as he could in order to deliver something completely different from the other Alex’s work.

While the original shines with a groovy and funky atmosphere, Velax’s Sexual Rave Rework lives up to its title and comes dressed to kill with an EBM-meets-Industrial-meets-Hardcore attitude. The imposing and ominous vocals added to this interpretation cannot go unmentioned.

PREMIERE335 // From Beyond - Datamaskin (Velax Sexual Rave Rework)

French group Zombie Zombie have recently come out of the shadows to look into the past. The three piece outfit, made up of Etienne Jaumet, Cosmic Neman & the Doctor Schonberg, released their last studio album back in 2017 - the dubbed-out sounds of Livity - which preceded a soundtrack for thriller "L'Heure De La Sortie" the following year. 

Now it's ancient Rome and the monks of the Middle Ages that are steering their path on new album Vae Vobis, which marks their first for the inimitable Born Bad Records. The enveloping sounds across the release blend the group's core influences - kraut-rock, cinematic soundtracks, house and dub - but this time laced with harmonic vocals and cryptic preaches, which are sung through vocoders in Latin, for the most part.

With this release Zombie Zombie are building on the sound bed they've become known for since forming in 2006. Of course this includes a swathe of memorable covers over the years, including Sun Ra, Suicide, Iggy Pop and John Carpenter, the latter two of whom praised the band's unique output.

To celebrate their welcome return, we tasked them with taking charge of this week's Wednesday Alternative mix which is an eerie journey through experimental, ritualistic rhythms, kraut and dub atmospheres.

"Some men are at home where others would be scared to tiptoe; Enter MILF Recordings, a new label that mysteriously emerges from nowhere (and everywhere at the same time). Immediately present in the artwork, a sex charged energy, reminiscent of a 80’s - 90’s heyday, intended for mature audiences only. Perhaps it lives on in this latest delivery from our good friend, “UNKNOWN ARTIST.” The opening scene, I mean track... “Adicktion” (Milf’s Edit) - a tough, rolling, disco-esque bassline, somewhat of a theme throughout the release, drives the listener, over shimmering, analog drums that gradually boil over into a synthy intensity, all while you are serenaded to the excited confessions of a sex addict. Track 2, “Dame Mature,” lowering the tempo somehow brings out a more mechanical sensuality in the track’s sampling, blending together voices, and more, over a cutting bassline, that patiently establishes a steady, easy to follow rhythm, which ends with what appears to be cracks of a whip, if that’s something you enjoy. The closing track, “Asstronomy” (Fuck Off Edit), a type of erotic, post apocalyptic outro, through space. More aggressive, and then later sludgy, pulsating, bass tones keep the energy moving, into an interestingly dubby, droning, breakdown, that would surely create some excellent mixing opportunities for any remotely creative DJ, possibly. All around, a solid collection for fans of dark disco edits, that any sweaty, open minded dancefloor would surely embrace, assuming there is a DJ in the building who is capable of wielding such a fiery trio.

A final note, for those who might only have eyes for vulgarity, where there is only music, offering their unsolicited judgment, I ask, how did you get here? Don’t answer that question."

Swiss music producer Thom Nagy - @thomnagy - released his "Damals" EP last year. The compilation involved his distinctive broad sounds, fluttering synths and warm subtly-applied basses. The EP's three tracks have now been remixed and will be published as Basel-based Gelbes Billet Musik's 30th release on April 30th, 2014.

Force Majeure's debut release on the 'Sulk Magic' imprint comes stocked with mind-altering treats. 
The title track 'Overawed' mesmerises with it's low-slung undulating electronics, acid flashes and arpeggio rhythms. 'Cheap Thrills' then accelerates proceedings with unfussy drums and robotic, bleep heavy melodies. 
Label owner Bird of Paradise offers up a relentless lo-fi version of the latter whilst Melbourne based Jamie Blanco provides a hustling futuristic soundscape. Damon Jee closes matters with his interpretation of 'Overawed', contributing a stripped back, double-time chugger.
