Seeing this song performed in Salt Lake City stands out as one of the top live music experiences of my life. Every time it got quiet, you could feel everyone holding their breath. This song is a masterpiece.

"I think I wrote 'Enough of Our Machines' back in early 2010, so it's been with me for a while. In some ways this is my favorite track on Lanterns, probably because my emotional and analytical sides are both in full effect. Here's a bit about the geekery...

The tangled arpeggios are a combination of string bow attacks (with the notes cut off), synth, and octave-dropped banjo. The feeling is mechanical, but the de-tuned banjo gives everything a broken or unsettled quality; it's rhythmically offset from the others, and separates itself by way of an independent deceleration before each harmonic change. A trio of pizzicato strings occasionally do the same, cascading at various rates of ritardando. Eventually, the piano chords from the opening return atop the arpeggios in a weird, swung hemiola (two-against-three) pattern against the pulse. The unpredictable quality of the piece eventually peaks and crumbles and yields to a simpler instrumentation and a warmer harmonic environment. A repeated melodic gesture, a variant of the string melody heard earlier, tries and tries again at different pitch levels. 'I'm asking you to take… I'm asking you to take…'" - Ryan Lott

"'No Crimes' is one of maybe only a couple songs on Lanterns that I began writing before pausing everything to write and record my second album, We Are Rising (http://music.sonluxmusic.com/album/we-are-rising). The song grew out of a small piece of guided improvisation I recorded with my good friend, drummer Darren King. I captured the kit traditionally, using several microphones at once, but then I displaced select mic images in time, offsetting them in rhythmic durations. The song evolved and took many forms, and I even played it live a few times, years before Lanterns." - Ryan Lott

"Several years ago, I wrote the score for a ballet for National Dance Company of Wales, choreographed by Stephen Petronio. The song "Ransom" emerged from a section of that score. ("Lanterns Lit" also began as part of that ballet.) Originally, "Ransom" included a full choir, and a gratuitous 4-minute closing section. Fortunately, the wiser voices in me prevailed. The synth line that opens the song and appears throughout was the last major change to develop, saving the song's pop potential from the grip of esoteric, apocalyptic melodrama. Now it's one of my favorites, and we love to play it live." - Ryan Lott

Two Spirit draws inspiration from James Broughton’s poem Androgyne. Broughton, a poet of the San Francisco Renaissance, was a forerunner of the Beat poets and a celebrated bard of the Radical Faeries. Founded by Harry Hay, the Radical Faeries drew upon Indigenous wisdom to imagine new pathways toward queer liberation.

From the start, Son Lux has operated as something akin to a sonic test kitchen. The Academy Award® and BAFTA-nominated band strives to question deeply held assumptions about how music is made and reconstruct it from a molecular level. What began as a solo project for founder Ryan Lott expanded in 2014, thanks to a kinship with Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia too strong to ignore. The trio strengthened their chemistry and honed their collective intuition while creating, releasing, and touring six recordings, including Brighter Wounds (2018) and triple album Tomorrows (2021). The result is a carefully cultivated musical language rooted in curiosity and balancing opposites that largely eschews genre and structural conventions. And yet, the band remains audibly indebted to iconoclastic artists in soul, hip-hop, and experimental improvisation who themselves carved new paths forward. 

Distilling these varied influences, Son Lux searches for equilibrium of raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions. Son Lux scored A24’s Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once for which they were nominated for two Academy Awards and a BAFTA. The full score album features new collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, Randy Newman, and Moses Sumney, among others.
