Hot on the heels of Apply the Pressure, his collaboration with Kat Five, Misled Convoy brings you Translations II, a collection of his remixes drawn from a wide geographical and musical net: breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty; Auckland based singer and songwriter Sandy Mill; old school Kiwi producer The Nomad; downtempo duo Deep Fried Dub; Weston and Frizzell’s art project Cardboard&Computers; Michael’s collaboration with Paddy Free, Pitch Black, and East London duo Feral Five.

Also featured is his remix, with the assistance of audio maverick Uncle Fester on Acid, of Dub Syndicate's cover of Lloyd Parks’ “Mafia”, featuring the late Bim Sherman on vocals. Michael and Fester created their version using samples culled from DATs of the original recording sessions at The Manor studio in Oxford, which the duo had been archiving for On-U Sound.

For years Misled Convoy has made syrupy bass-heavy, predominantly instrumental dub tracks, but Translations II is awash with vocals. “I’ve spent the last year tucked away in my studio, hearing nothing but the haunting and powerful voices of Kat Five, Bim Sherman, Srikala, Luminahdi and others flowing around my studio, creating a connection to the wider world. Bring on the layrnx!”

As you might expect from a Misled Convoy release, the collection traverses a wide variety of genres, from electro house to dub techno, industrial ambience to broken beats, all now awash in a sea of dub effects, delay and reverb in his distinctive style. Some of the remixes simply re-present a new way to access and appreciate the original track, sometimes they produce completely different songs completely reimagined. 

 “I really love taking other people’s melodies and ideas and working them into completely new tracks with my production process. Because there is already a body of work, and the challenge is not having the original concept, but in the how I re-imagine that track into a new work, a new sound, a new state.

With more than 30 years in the game @eddy_ramich has long been regarded one of the finest producers on the scene with releases on BBE, Far Out Compost and SSOH. Equally renowned  as a top class DJ, Eddy has travelled the globe and has made some fantastic connections across the years several of which he has brought together for his brilliant new track including Roman Rauch, Pete Josef, Shuya Okino on remix duties and the the label Sonar Kollektive.

To celebrate the release the Insider spoke to Eddy in depth about his career including living in Berlin, his home country of Croatia where he cut his teeth as a Dj and promoter, Radio 101 and all about the current single. WAAN represents the musical marriage of seasoned saxophonist Bart Wirtz and keyboard wiz Emiel van Rijthoven. As a pair of self-confessed tech nerds hailing from The Netherlands, their bromance was a slow burning one, but nevertheless their eventual collaboration fulfilled a dream that they’d both held close since first working together back in 2010. With influences as disparate as Floating Points, Belgian band Stuff, BadBadNotGood and Eddie Harris, the album is far more complex than just being a dance music influenced jazz record. Co-producer Oscar de Jong, of Kraak & Smaak fame, encouraged the pair to play freely as part of a jazz group and then add the electronic elements.

The pair's first meeting, though, was a somewhat forced affair. It occurred in 2010 at the Paradox club - an esteemed jazz venue in Tilburg, in the southern Netherlands. It was the club’s open-minded approach of inviting musicians of different styles to play together as an ensemble that finally got Bart and Emiel in the same room. They wrote and played together, and quickly formed a deep bond. Their styles complemented each other perfectly, they listened to each other, and both shared a desire to play expansive, experimental music.

This turned out to be something of a singular encounter though, and the duo didn’t connect again until Bart asked Emiel to join him in the studio five years later. The saxophonist had been looking for a synth and keys player to help take his music to more out-there places, and Emiel fit the bill perfectly. Having tried to involve the whole band in the creative process, Bart realised that his writing relationship with Emiel was the only one that clicked and, taking the music recorded with the band as a starting point, the duo we now know as WAAN (a Dutch word meaning “craze”) were formed. Consequently, the pair began to work with session musicians, keeping their vision solely between the two of them, and found themselves behaving more like dance music producers than traditional band leaders.

The new dynamic worked though, the result being their debut album Echo Echo.

Pete Josef is an artist who uses his soulful eloquence not just to entertain, but to open up conversations about his own social consciousness. He has an inherent need to create, build, share and protect as well as educate himself about issues regarding the environment, society, politics, race and gender. All of these have permeated into his musical output in recent years, but on the new single, entitled Sunny Side Up, it’s the often not talked about topic of depression that comes to the fore.

Despite the bleak subject matter, it’s actually a song about the importance of having people around you to support you when you’re not feeling at your best. Pete admits to suffering from anxiety for much of his life, and cherishes having his family present when he feels unable to step up as a partner or parent; when he experiences that ‘hazy funk’ in the day-to-day. In many ways it’s a love song, or at least one of appreciation for the people who carry you through those moments in your life.

“Took a little while and it might take longer, god only knows.. But darling I try. I’m invested all ways. I just hit bumps in the road that I cannot evade.”

Like much of Pete’s new material, the song has a retro and somewhat South American feel. For the first time in a long while, Pete chose to perform all the instrumental parts on this track himself.

A 1960s Harmony Sovereign (the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ guitar!) provides the core, whilst minimal drums (recorded with one single mic in Pete’s Orchard Cabin) and Hofner vintage bass provide a groove reminiscent of stripped back 1970s Al Green productions. The result is something delicate and spontaneous – perfectly reflecting the shaky ground felt in the moment of conception. The track ebbs and flows between some surprising harmonic twists, later on bringing the Hammond organ to the fore and swelling to a dramatic climax, permeated by backing vocal arrangements and glimmering electric guitar.

Sunny Side Up is taken from Pete Josef’s forthcoming third album, to be released in 2024, recorded in his self-built and self-sustainable studio cabin in his garden. The exchange between studio and live has become a unifying force since the resurrection of his live quartet in 2022. This year will bring choice live shows, featuring the mercurial Eli Jitsuto from Bristol based outfit Snazzback on guitar and longtime collaborators Jihad Darwish on bass and Miguel Andrews on drums.

A citizen of the world living in Los Angeles, Sarkis Mikael is a DJ and producer creating eclectic electronic music.
