Today’s episode is a special one. We’re having a discussion with Alex Coles, author of a brand-new book that charts the history and impact of jazz fusion, using key songs to trace its 50-year evolution and contributions to Rock, Hip-Hop, Electronic music and more.

The central idea from the book that really stood out to me is that Fusion should be viewed as a “process” rather than a genre. In the last 50 years, this process of exploration and collaboration between genres, cultures, generations and production techniques has contributed so much to contemporary music.

Alex is a London-based art, design and music writer, critic and also a senior editor at the fabulous Sternberg Press publishing house. His latest title "Fusion" available now in the UK and early March in North America.

It felt important right now to come back to the words and teachings of Howard Zinn, when the U.S. government is causing and propagating so much fear and racism and oppression and just plain meanness, and things seem tilted toward hopelessness.
