Jungle is a genre of electronic music that developed out of the UK rave scene and sound system culture in the 1990s. Emerging from breakbeat hardcore, the style is characterized by rapid breakbeats, heavily syncopated percussive loops, samples, and synthesized effects, combined with the deep basslines, melodies, and vocal samples found in dub, reggae and dancehall, as well as hip hop and funk. Many producers frequently sampled the "Amen break" or other breakbeats from funk and jazz recordings. 

Departing from the customary predictability found in machine-generated dance music, where a consistent pulse facilitates a trance-like state for the listener, Jungle introduces a palpable sense of jeopardy. The jungle sound inspired other styles of dance music, including drum and bass and ragga jungle, and spawned several subgenres before losing ground among listeners. However, it remains a favorite among EDM fans, who revived and retooled its signature sound throughout the 2000s.

Location: Glasgow, UK

Co-founded in 1991 by the electronic music duo Slam, Dave Clarke and Glenn Gibbons. The label is known for releasing early works of Slam, Jeff Mills, Silicone Soul’s ″Right On Right On″, Funk D’Void, Felix da Housecat’s early track ″Clashback″, the original vinyl version of Daft Punk's track ″Da Funk″ and much more. Today, Soma continues to be one of the world's leading electronic dance labels, releasing techno, IDM, ambient, and other genres. 

This episode of RMS will feature some of the label’s more recent releases… diving into deep percussive and hypnotic techno!

This is a studio recording of a set I performed at The RVA Boombox a few weeks ago. A mixture of 140, Jungle, Drum & Bass, and Experimental (Left Field) genres.
