Planet Of Secrets

A quick improvisation, which is a variation on one of my own themes, but using an MPE controller with an 8 voice, 24 osc analog synth and a bit of an OTT effects unit for wishy-washy ambient soundscapes.
I chose the name "Evangelina", because it sounds a bit similar to "Vangelis" a little like the track itself...
This is effectively my first WYSIWYG track, what you see, in the picture of the gear on my desk, is what you're getting...
Instrument: MFB Synth Pro 8 voice VCO 24 oscillator MPE compatible synth.
Controller Keyboard: Keith McMillen K-Board Pro 4 (MPE)
Effects: MOOER Ocean Machine 

No plugins were used in the DAW,  just a bit of EQ and mastering (light compression).

Its not a Vangelis theme, but I was trying to get some of that B.R./Vangelis/CS80 vibe in there, because that is what you do with a vintage-sounding 8 voice analogue polysynth with extra expression controls, isn't it?

Evangelina (MFB/MPE)

Quick synth and drum machine  noodle with the all-new KORG modwave and also featuring the Arturia Drumbrute Impact in the key of E major.

My one and only wavetable synth, the locally engineered Modal Argon 8 broke, so I bought another wave table synth the new Modwave from Korg, I had been interested in this one for a while anyway.
Modal fixed my broken Argon surprisingly quickly and now I have two of them alongside my analogues and one digital workstation style synth that does FM and pianos and my litle Roland D-05 Boutique.
Track is made with presets only as the synth is still new to me and I have yet to learn to program it.

Gravitational Waves

Another wavetable synth instrumental, this time three  WT synths vs the one (Modwave)  of the last track.
I was going for the sound that I have heard from Tangerine Dream on their Waldorf/PPG synths, by using a hybrid synth that I have, which can do WTs into analogue (despite not being a real PPG/Waldorf creation).

On this track are:
Novation Peak, which has analog filters and WT capability, for the bass arp.
Then the other parts are one part Modal Argon 8, which was recently fixed and 6 parts KORG Modwave, which is new to the home studio.

I recorded the BASS arp on the Peak first against the Drumbrute tracks - I played it in E major, but later found it was transposed down 2 semitones, so effectively the track is in D.

Drums are Arturia Drumbrute Impact, a 64 step pattern I programmed that runs at 100bpm.

Riding The Waves

Sadly, the surfer dude, from the previous track, has met his end in choppy waters...

One take track, sombre instrumental on the Korg Modwave - straight from the synth into audacity: no external effects, no Audacity tweaks, no plugins, no DAW.

Requiem For A Surfer

A synthwave and rock fusion track.
I worked on this over a month ago then left it as haven't been doing music for about a month.
Today I added piano, violin and trumpet sounds on the Yamaha Modx7.
I was going to call it New Beginnings as its 2nd Jan, start of year etc, but I have already used a similar title so went with "Dawn of a new era"

Its in the key of E major and 115bpm.

Dawn Of A New Era

4 minute long ambient synth instrumental in E major, tempo = 130bpm.
A companion piece to Dawn of a New Era, in the same key and sharing some of the chord progressions, but recorded as a completely separate track: none of the audio is actually re-used. Track is in the same key, but faster in tempo and much more Sci Fi and effects oriented than its sister track.
I have replaced all the rock tune elements of the last piece with swirly, whirly, heavily modulated wavetable synth effect type sounds.
I used the wavetable synths (with MPE expression as well on the Argon) to get lots of movement and modulation in the sound and to go for ethereal, sci-fi esque timbres.
I will try a different version with guitar and bass on it later, see how that goes, but for now its purely synth and drum machine based.

Dreadbox Nymphes is a small, Greek made, 6 voice analogue polyphonic synth that, as of firmware v2 has MPE for increased polyphonic expression

Dreamy, spacy, fluid, slightly trance-like, but not true EDM synth instrumental added a small bass solo and electric guitar solo for variety.

Ethereal Beings

First crack with, new to me, Waldorf M, a wavetable synth that echoes both the the old Waldorf Microwave and the legendary PPG series wavetable synths - it has digital wavetables running into an old skool analogue synth.

Two synth parts are jammed over a Elektron Model Cycles beat pattern I created. The beat is pulse like, somewhat akin to a heart beat.
A minimalist lean synth track, the first I have done in several months...

Signals From The Skies

I haven't done a track for a few months, so had a crack at doing one today. Actually so rusty, I had forgotten some of the DAW techniques and plugin names...  :o(

This simple track is influenced by old 60s and 70s spy shows like 'The Persuaders' also has a slightly Jarre like lead strings sound.

Venusian Dream

All analogue synth electronica/ambient instrumental using largely vintage design analog synths. There is a fairly long intro of about 57 seconds that gives way to a softer more melodic and ambient main theme that runs until the last 30 seconds when a more psychedelic, trippy outro comes in.

The track features two of the most iconic analogue hardware synthesizers from the 70s: The Arp Odyssey (KORG re-issue)on lead duties and Moog Model D (Behringer clone) used on the bassline. The track also features the new analogue KORG prologue 8, plus the minilogue PG and Arturia Minibrute SE synths.  
No sequencers or plugins were used on this, track just hardware synths, hardware effects units and keyboard controllers.

Along The Astral Plane

Another mainly analogue  "Synthstrumental" - this is the first one since I have come back from holiday in Budapest.
This version is all synths, but I will endeavor to try to make another version with guitar and bass.
This is the only track I have done so far using BOTH of the "expensive" synths I have, I.E: the Prologue and Peak together.
 
I say its "mainly" analogue as the Drumbrute and Prologue are pure analogue, but the Peak is a hybrid with NCO oscillators through analogue circuits and filters.

2 synth parts: KORG Prologue using its own built -in keyboard - these are the Numanesque lead synth and the Blade Runner-esque brass outro - everything else is Peak.

Sands Of Tunisia

The Space Goblins are back, but this time they are much angrier and nastier than before!...
The track is sort of dark SciFi Fantasy, perhaps with a nod to 50s and 60s B Movies and Danny Elfman's scores for Tim Burton, plus it contains a few classical music inspired elements for good measure.

Synth, piano, theremin and violin instrumental, which started as all analog hardware synth track, but then I added a digital hardware synth and piano/violin samples to the mix.
Finally, I added the Theremin because its a staple of the old 50s-60s Scifi stuff that this track is a homage to.
NOTE: "Talking" alien is a VSTi synth patch played on keyboard, not  vocoder.


The track started as Drumbrute Impact percussion and a Minilogue bass line - then I spent many hours trying to get an interesting lead sound from the Behringer Neutron and ended up with a gurgling resonant lead to which I added a Streichfett string synth.
Finally, I finished the track with piano Sonivox Electric 88 on the intro and Waves Electric Grand 80 on the outro and some violins courtesy of Sonivox Strings.

I have two rack effects units - one is fairly new - Behringer Virtualizer 3d FX2000 - the other is quite old - Zoom Studio 1204 - for the first time I used both units together on all the synth parts of this track.

Burial for a Captain

I usually make tracks in the style of (what I consider to be) "classic era" late 70s/early 80s analog synth instrumentals, but this is an attempt to create a very cheesy late 80s, style synthrock/pop track with both analog and digital drums and synths and shlocky 80s "Mark King" style slap bass and 80s heavily processed rock guitar.

The track does have a unintentionally similar sound in places to "The Chosen Ones" by Bryan Ferry but the synth bass is completely different and the slap bass, I think its the lead guitar which sounds so similar (All I did was try to create a cheesy 80s track in E Major) (using a Marcus Miller signature bass didnt help though, despite my "more Mark King" style playing)...

Also first chance to use a new synth, the Roland Boutique, D-05 which is a recreation of the classic Roland D-50 from 1987. This is my first Roland synth, but I do also have a Boss guitar effects unit (used on here)Boss being Roland's guitar division. Some also say that the Deepmind (which I also have) is a Roland Juno knock off...

Saharan Sunrise

All synth instrumental - unusually (for me) I used only digital synths, though the drum parts were created on an analog DM and I warmed up the sound (of the bassy synth pad) with a Vintage Phaser and Tube Pre-amp to give it a warmer, more vintage vibe. 
I thought the flute sound gave it an Oriental feel, so went with the idea of it being the theme to a hypothetical Vietnam film. Its quite a basic track, but has a full sound, so left it minimalist with just 6 audio tracks to it.

The song has analog drums from the Drumbrute Impact - I used a plugin on the percussion (not the kick) to make it Lo-Fi -  and the flute and choir intro/outro and Flugelhorn are from the Roland D-05 digital synth.
The most interesting part, as far as I am concerned, is the is the big/ fat drone like Pad. 
This was actually done on a Waldorf Streichfett string machine, but the left channel was put thru a Vintage Phaser guitar pedal and the right channel thru a Laney Ironheart IRT Pulse dual valve (2 x 12AX7)pre-amp, prior to hitting the audio interface and the end result is most unlike the sound one would expect from a String Synth - particularly the Streich, which isn't even analog...
I manipulated the levels of tube gain and phaser rate manually to make the pad more involving and interesting...

An electric guitars, bass guitar and synth instrumental, the title is inspired by the hard-sync sound of the lead synth melody: This  is a prog/funk/fusion (Return to Forever/Weather Report/very early Level 42) kind of  instrumental track featuring the DSi Sequential Prophet REV-2, Roland D-05. Arturia Drumbrute, Waldorf Rocket, Yamaha Pacifica lead guitar and Ibanez Sound Gear electric bass guitar.

Synchronisation

Improvised instrumental hard rock/progressive rock soundtrack - much heavier than most things I do, most of the sound is guitar and bass guitar, not synth. This track has a harder-hitting, almost metal sound, maybe Muse/Nine Inch Nails/Rage against the Machine territory, with an attempt at some (basic) Satriani/Vai influenced guitar tapping.

Track features analog drums, a sequenced analog synth line, 5 string bass guitar - I did actually use the low B string on the bass, heavy guitar and some phat Blade Runner style analogue synth brass sounds.

Not only is the track heavier than my usual ones, but I also used an outboard hardware compressor on the track for the first time - previously I have only use plug in compressors.

Warlords Of Andromeda

All analog synth early 80s style synth instrumental with added valve pre-amp, analog vintage phaser pedal and analogue 1176 hardware compressor to try to give the true retro sound of the 70s/80s as much as possible. The bass synth is intentionally fizzy, gnarly, gritty and distorted its almost a bass/lead synth sound...
Its got sort of a quick, unpolished raw demo-track sound to it, so lacks a little in subtlety.

Carbone Noir

All analog hardware synth and drum machine instrumental.
Programmed a funky 16ths beat of my own creation into Drumbrute and then made a pad and funky synth bass line to go with it, but after I added the lead line it took on a slightly Eastern flavour to it so I called it Constantinople.

Lead was done in one  take and is a bit of a raw jam over the rest of the track,unfortunately the fluffed timing/off notes are at the start of the lead line... may re-record the lead part and overwrite file later...

Constantinople

Another hand played synth/guitar/bass instrumental improvisation - no MIDI clock synching or sequencing here, so its loose and raw with a live improv feel...

This started out as a track in a similar vein to early Giorgio Moroder stuff from the mid 70s, then as I went along, it became more like a homage to Gary Numan style tracks from the late 70s, but with added slap bass and lead guitar -  This gives rise to the title & concept, which is JG Ballard/PK dick inspired I.E: That of an android escort as per "Are friends electric" or "Pris" from "Blade Runner".
The Streichfett is sounding quite similar to the Vox Numana patch of the Polymoog here (to my ears).

More than Human

Spy themed synth instrumental with some sound effects just for a bit of fun - did the spy die or did he kill his enemy at the end (sounds like someone bit the bullet)? 

DRUMS: Original 64 step pattern I created on Behringer RD-8 (Roland 808 clone) going thru KT1176 hardware compressor.
Main Synth: KORG Minilogue and Modal Skulpt combined as one analogue/digital hbrid with the Skulpt feeding its audio thru the Minilogue.

Deadly Mission

Mellow, ambient 80s-influenced, electronica synth track.
The track is more gentle, calm and ambient/mellow than what I normally release on here & it has a bit of a choir like feel, with slightly oriental bell sounds from the old FM DX series synth, so I went for an Oriental Temple theme.
Apart from the sequenced K-2 arp, everything was hand played on keyboards.
The track is all synths (which I haven't done for a while) its a  mixture of analogue hardware synths and 1980s digital hardware synths giving it a retro 80s sound.

Osaka

Trying out some new gear and sounds on this; its ambient, but also slightly moody, dark and atmospheric.
Was originally doing this as synths and ambient guitar, but a new piece of synth kit that arrived today changed that.
No actual drum machine, per se, was used. Instead, percussion was done on an FM groovebox called Elektron Model: Cycles, using a patch I programmed into it. Though I've not learned how to use it properly, yet.
There are 2 analog synths on the track -  Crave and K-2 running a sequence, that is the perculating, chugging effect that comes in mid way...
Everything else is done on the new, to me, Yamaha MODX-7, which is like a cut - down budget Montage. I got this for its FM synth engine and pianos/organs.

Discovering The Truth

Quick demo in the form of a retro synth pop tune in an early 80s style: MFB Synth Pro 8 voice analogue VCO poly made in Berlin.

Shadows Of The Assassin

South West UK based, amateur, solo-artist, creating tracks with (mostly) analog synthesizers, analog drum machines, electric bass and guitars.
The tracks are instrumental music pieces and "jams" in a variety of styles, from pop to rock, 80s, electronica, funk/jazz funk, fusion and prog - often heavily stylized and influenced by artists from the 70s and 80s.
