Blue Sands

Laxá & Heima Kvartett convened in a new rehearsal space, a derelict house with crumbling plaster and a broken chandelier barely hanging from the ceiling. Dust covered the bare floorboards, and every creak was picked up by the studio mics.

Matthias had been working on programming drums and that coupled with him digging in the crates and listening to 90s UK drum and bass led to him putting his kit to one side and setting the percussive tone on this track, a clear counterpoint to the string quartet's more conventional approach.

Usually when I post a new song, I have some profound and emotional tidbit to share about the human condition and how the making of the song relates to it blah blah blah.  But today, I simply am sharing the result of an experiment, one that *cough cough* I have some profound and emotional tidbits to say about (hey, I'm only human, did you think I was some kind of cat? Come on).

The experiment went like this:

1.  Make a melody, counter melody, chord progression, and bass line.
2. Put all of those elements into one sound (like a piano) layered over each other.
3. Duplicate it for each bar of the song.
4. With each duplication, vary the tone, sonic frequency, rhythm, etc. But keep to the original notes.
5. Repeat, cut, or remove your variations to taste.

Yes, that sounds like a general recipe to make music.  But the point here is that sometimes we think we are breaking the rules and experimenting with new things, but in reality, the universe is just letting us use her lab.  And it is the most beautiful lab in the whole... well it's just the most beautiful thing.  And she lets us use it everyday for free.  What will you experiment with today?
