Techno Mixes

Techno! It's not just black-clad Berlin hipsters with weird quasi-mullets, it's also (lest you forget) ... really American! So for my latest mix I have dug into my record collection to put together a 35 track feast of clanking techno from the halcyon days of the 90's, all by American artists. I'm American, sure, but this is not some kind of weird nationalistic project ... it's just a fun theme. :)

And sure, obviously, there are lots of artists I've missed out on, and many major tracks ... but then again this isn't supposed to be *the* mix of 90's American techno, merely *a* mix of 90's American techno.

Drum Machines & Post-Industrial Dreams (American Techno in the 90's)

This year I'm kicking off a new mix series to celebrate the first 25 years of this century: 21st Century Music! Each mix will contain only music from this century. To kick things off, here's a mix of proper techno music from the beginning of the century. This is very personal for me, as this is a point at which I was really engaged with techno - listening to it, dancing to it, thinking about it, and playing it. This is the point when I was a student at Edinburgh University, and I was visiting the (sadly no longer with us) Studio 24 on Calton Road practically every weekend with friends to enjoy techno clubs like Dogma, Pillbox, Apex, Subtle Logic, and more. 

This was a time when techno was really fun and interesting, the time of 'hard grooves', of funky techno, of high impact, danceable music, before the walls of minimal closed in and techno got really, really boring for a while. There's been a revival of this style in recent years (see my Stranger tribute mix, for instance), which is not surprising, because this style of techno is just so much more fun than minimal.

It’s a bold, tongue-in-cheek record designed for the dancefloor — rooted in groove but not afraid to push boundaries. I wanted to capture that carefree, infectious energy that keeps people moving, while still delivering something with character and attitude.

This is the first of several new tracks I’ve been working on, and I can’t wait for you to hear what’s coming next. “I Really Don’t Love Hoes” drops soon — stay tuned.

Super Rhythmic Facts (A Super Rhythm Trax Tribute)

When you think of Natural Selection, Michael Silmon is one of the people you have to thank for its existence. As one of the founders of the collective, Natural Selection is now in its tenth year, returning frequently to Canning Town with killer lineups after having migrated south with Silmon from Newcastle where it was formed in 2010. On the many occasions that we’ve invited Natural Selection to host nights at FOLD, the result has always been an incredible marriage between sounds, our threads woven together to create a blazing tapestry of sonics that seek to pay homage to the legends and veterans of the scene. 

Meanwhile, Michael’s performing alias, Kodah, is doing equally as well. Brought up upon a diet of hardcore and gabber which was prevalent in Newcastle when he was a teen, Michael satiated this interest initially by collecting tapes from the raves that were running at that time. This inspiration from collectives such as Rezerection and Judgement Day became the primary creative motivations in discovering his musical vocation, and went on to seek how to develop this, eventually entrenching himself deep within the experimental, warped allure of techno and electro. A common face at UNFOLD, his most recent set at our 6th instalment back in November was unforgettable, reminding our community of why we took him on as a resident at FOLD; he is an artist with true knowledge, passion, and appreciation for the past.

For this DETECT accompanying mix, Michael recorded a very special hour of towering, alien selections from his own home in isolation. Keep your ears peeled in particular for the closing track; as he put it himself when he sent this over, this mix was the precursor to an exquisitely Good Day, and he hopes that the message speaks for itself, and that it precedes only positivity to those who listen to it.

I just turned 40 yesterday (wow!) and to celebrate I am very happy to present my magnum opus, this monstrous 4 hour techno journey, an imaginary Berghain set that explores the nooks and crannies of modern techno. It's the longest and most complex mix I've ever done, and I couldn't be more proud of it. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.
