I've been a dj for 25 years (1997!) so I thought I would put together a set of playlists to celebrate my mix output over the years. This playlist explores my very first love: the world of breakbeats! 25 Years of Being a DJ: 25 of my best Techno / Acid / House Mixes

A very special two mix set dedicated to classic drum n' bass sounds, reimagining nights at two of the most influential London clubs of all time: Speed and Metalheadz, respectively the key nights for the intelligent drum n' bass and techstep movements. Each mix is 25 tracks long and features my attempt to think through what a night at each would sound like.

Listening to the two mixes back to back, I'm struck again by just how creatively vital the 90's UK drum n' bass scene was, how the producers took a simple set of rules - 160-170 bpm, focus on breakbeats and bass - and created a kaleidoscopic range of results. I know there's an element of nostalgia talking here, no question (as there always is when middle-aged men talk about the music of their youth), but this was really a special moment in electronic music history, and I'm very privileged to have been there for (part of) it. 

This little project is my attempt to re-capture a little bit of that feeling … I've done my best, and now I'm sharing it with you!

Here's a mix of some modern breakbeat stuff that I've been feeling. Been picking up some records in this style over the last few years and decided to slap them together into a longish but very enjoyable set. Only did this in one take so there are a couple wonky moments, but that's life, you know. The tunes are fucking great, though! I've tried to mix up the textures and vibes through the mix, and I think it works out pretty nicely.

Another Breaks Mix

Don't Give Up [Modern Breakbeat Mix]

On July 1st 2021 my good friend Vali NME Click is dropping the pre-orders for the epic 'Message from the Parazone' on @parallaxrecordings, a monster four disc album featuring the best and brightest artists from the modern breakbeat hardcore / jungle scene. To celebrate this momentous event, Vali asked me to put together a retrospective of the label so far, so I've come up with this mix, which picks out at least one track from each of the releases so far, covering both the old skool re-releases as well as the new skool exclusives. Memories of the Parazone [Parallax Album Promo Mix]

For my final mix of 2021 I'm dropping something I've wanted to do for quite some time, and that I'm very excited to share with you ... my tribute to the amazing 90's output of the one and only @armandvanhelden! I know I generally don't do much house music stuff, but I've been a fan of his stuff for literally 25 years, so I thought the moment was right to put together a little something special. The mix is a selection of 30 of his tracks and remixes, organized in chronological order from 1993 to 1997 (OK, there are a few from '93 and '98, but the principle still holds), which allows you to really hear how his sound progressed over the course of just a few years. 

Given the man's unbelievably prolific output in those years you could do such a mix in so many ways, so it goes without saying that this is just my take - I've left a few of the most obvious anthems out (the Tori Amos and Sneaker Pimps remixes most obviously), but I think that I've included a lot of great tunes, some famous, others more obscure.

I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed putting it together!

Eurotrash Mixes

Eurotrash 7 [Old Skool European Acid Techno Mix]

Here's a mix that I'm really excited to share! This is a selection of modern jungle techno, all mixed on vinyl. The title is a reference to the fact that the brief flowering of jungle techno in the early 90's was a real missed opportunity, as this style of music is just basically awesome - chopped-up breakbeats layered over thumping 4/4 kickdrums, undergirded by punishing bass, and layered over with samples of all things 'dark' (horror movie strings, mentasm stabs, spooky dialogue, etc), and spiked with techno-esque stabs. It's great! So I've been really excited over recent years to see the revival of this sound, and so I've dug through my collection to put together this mix for you. Enjoy!

Rethinking Missed Chances: The Return of Jungle Techno

Here is the latest edition of my long-running Eurotrash mix series, dedicated to the best of 90's European (and a little UK) hard trance and hard acid. This edition is a little bit more sedate than some of the others, starting at 135 bpm and ending at 150 bpm, but it's still packed full of absolutely killer tracks, both classic and obscure. As ever, this is mixed completely on vinyl.

75 Shadows Mixes

75 Shadows 003: 1995 [Moving Shadow Tribute Series]

I'm very excited to share the fifth and final mix in a very special project for the summer of 2022: 75 Shadows, my tribute to one of the most important labels in electronic music history ... Moving Shadow!

This is slightly delayed due to travel and an injury, but the concept was that over a five week period I will be releasing a new 15 track Moving Shadow tribute mix weekly, each dedicated to a specific year from 1993 to 1997. I think that when you hear the whole series, you will be able to understand just what an amazing and creative label Moving Shadow was, as in the space of just five years they released everything from euphoric breakbeat hardcore to sinister darkcore to jungle anthems to rugged hardstep to smoothly atmospheric drum n' bass to fearsome techstep, and beyond.

Stranger Beats: A Stranger Tribute [Thumping Modern Techno with an Old Skool Twist]

For my latest mix for the @begrime crew, I've decided to put together a selection of early(ish) grime tracks with a special theme. The idea of the mix was to look back at the mid-2000's period when grime was really taking off and pull together some interesting tracks released by (or remixed by) grime artists on non-grime labels, specifically on major labels as well as by well-known non-grime independent labels.

Kind of niche, I know ... but fun! It's also a bit of an experiment for me, as I don't normally mix so many vocal tracks, so this was quite a cool project to work on.

One of my favorite producers of recent years is London-born, Berlin-based @lucalozano, a multi-talented producer, dj, designer, label boss, and artist. His tracks show a distinct old skool sensibility (you know, right down my alley), mashing up bleepy house, old skool Detroit techno vibes, breaks, electro, and jungle. It's quite a heady mixture!

This mix is just a little tribute I recorded last week as something to listen to while taking the train to Vienna, and now I'm sharing it with you. Enjoy!

City Groove: A Quick Luca Lozano Tribute

Berlin nach Wien [Deep Dubstep Mix - Perfect for Long Journeys]

Part 2 of a very special two mix set dedicated to classic drum n' bass sounds, reimagining nights at two of the most influential London clubs of all time: Speed and Metalheadz. This mix is dedicated to the sound of Metalheadz, a club that I was lucky enough to attend a number of time, the memory of which is seared into my brain.

From the blog:

 I remember the dancefloor being incredibly tiny, incredibly packed, and incredibly LOUD. You were crammed into a small space, part of a heaving mass of sweaty bodies, surrounded by speakers. Whatever surround sound experience you’ve had at a movie theater was nothing like The Blue Note on Sunday nights … you didn’t just hear the music, you felt it. It was an incredible physical experience – I remember moments where the bass was so powerful I felt my nostrils flapping like in a hurricane, with each bass hit reverberating through my ribcage. The music was incredible, a true future shock … eerie atmospheres overlaid on top of kinetic, shape-shifting beats, undergirded by bass in an incredible variety of forms, from icy shockwaves of sub-bass that were so low in frequency they were at the edges of human hearing, to solid 808-style bass hits, to the occasional funky flourish, to roaring distorted basslines that sounded like Godzilla with a bad case of acid reflux.

This part 1 of a a very special two mix set dedicated to classic drum n' bass sounds, reimagining nights at two of the most influential London clubs of all time: Speed and Metalheadz. This mix focuses on imagining a night at Speed at the Mars Bar, Soho ... a night I never went to!

From the blog post:

Taking place on a Thursday as well as being located right in the heart of London instead of a massive warehouse on the outskirts meant that Speed attracted a different, more mature crowd, including curious fans of other styles of electronic music as well as people from the music industry. It’s hard to overstate the importance of this night to the development of the lighter side of drum n’ bass – it was a testing ground for new sounds that could then be taken on the road around the UK (and the world!) on the weekends. It was a place where people from the scene – producers, dj’s, a&r’s, hangers-on – could connect, interact and plan collaborations. It was somewhere that this sound could take root and grow, away from the pressure cooker environment of the big raves, where thousands of teenagers wanted the latest mental sounds. It was also a crucial venue for spreading the sound beyond the existing scene, a place where people who would never dream of going to a One Nation or AWOL or Roast could be turned on to high-speed breakbeats.

Not The Future We Were Promised (Classic Jungle)

Few electronic music genres are more misunderstood or the subject of greater hostility than trance. But that's because a lot of it was and is terrible. But not the collected works of Nuclear Hyde ... this is real trance music.

So what is their sound and why do I think it is more real trance than the music of, say, Tiesto?

Well, above all, their music fulfilled the core imperative of trance - it was relentless, hypnotic music where percussive sounds were balanced with melodic flashes, where the energy came from the balance of elements not from taking the easy route of sounding really 'hard'. Pulsing, bouncing, driving - pick your adjective, they all basically describe the sound perfectly. Tracks that didn't rely on obviously anthemic elements to keep the dancefloor engaged and excited. And all of the tracks perfectly engineered with exemplary German precision to sound just gorgeous on a big sound system.

Running Into Neon (A Nuclear Hyde Tribute)

This mix was recorded as a promo for my set at the morning session on December 19th 2015 for @mechatronicamusic at Griessmuehle in Berlin's Sonnenallee. The party kicked off on the Friday night, but I took over at 8am for the real diehards with a session of serious acid music. To get ready for it, I recorded this epic session, that dives deep into my record collection for 29 tracks of amazing 303 grooves, building from 130 bpm bubbling acid to straight up 150+ bpm hard acid mayhem.

Darkside Generation (Vintage 1993 Darkside Hardcore & Jungle Techno Vinyl Mix!)

For my latest mix, I am very excited to jump back 25 years to the halcyon days of 1992, when the UK rave scene was probably at its height. I've tried to capture the diversity of the rave scene at the time by starting with techno before moving on to breakbeat hardcore. OK, this mix is not strictly 1992 stuff, as there are a few bits from 1990/1991, but the general idea is to capture a kind of representative sound of that early rave era, from big anthems like 'Camargue', 'Energy Flash', 'Dreamworld' and 'Trip II The Moon' through to more obscure tunes.

Morally Diminished 3 (Funky Techno Mix)

Carl Cox is pretty much the embodiment of the 'superstar dj'.

One interesting thing about Carl Cox, and something that is often forgotten, is that back in the early 90's he was one of the biggest names in the UK hardcore rave scene, and he fucking rocked at it. In a single set you could hear anything from British breakbeat hardcore to Dutch gabber, with Scottish bouncy techno, hard American acid and European hard trance all thrown in his trademark three-deck blender. 

Since he was so awesome, and so unique in many ways, I wanted my latest mix to be a tribute to what he was doing in his rave heyday - I wanted to boil down two years worth of his musical selections into a single mix, with nice and crisp audio quality and no shitty mc's. To do so, I built a database of 25 tracklistings from 1993/1994 and pulled together a tracklisting of 45 tunes that captures all of the elements of the Carl Cox rave experience. 

I am really happy with this mix, and I hope you enjoy it too!

Rolled In Sunshine (Rolling Jungle - All Killer No Filler!)

With the decade about to end I am very excited to share with you a special and very personal project - I call it 30x3, and it is my attempt to make sense of my decades-long relationship wit the Roland TB-303, the fabled acid box synthesizer that has soundtracked so much of my life. 

30x3 is three mixes, each with 30 tracks, each dedicated to a different chapter in the story of how electronic musicians have utilized the Roland TB-303. I will be presenting the next two chapters over the following Mondays.

This first mix in the series is thus a celebration of that raw 90's acid techno sound - that pounding synthesis that reverberated around raw warehouse spaces from Detroit to Berlin to London to New York to Rotterdam to Melbourne and beyond; all cities that are represented on this mix.

Squat Rocking 10: Chris Liberator in the 90's (Tribute to London acid techno legend)

All true hardcore afficionados will know the epic Yaman series of studio mix tapes, so for this mix I went to Discogs and copied the tracklistings from all of the Yaman tapes from 1993 into a spreadsheet and painstakingly built this tracklisting, taking tracks from each dj and each tape. When you consider the year's tapes came from LTJ Bukem, Randall, DJ Hype, Peshay and Jumping Jack Frost, you know that such a method is pretty much nailed on to deliver a killer selection of tunes!

As you can see, this mix shows off just how awesome hardcore was in 1993, and how it bridged 1992 rave mayhem to 1994 junglism (some of the tracks here were still only dubplates in '93 and didn't come out until later). 1993 was the key year, the last point where the rave scene was united as one, before it fragmented off into many different directions. If you are someone who wasn't even born then and are listening to this mix now, trust me, you're in for a treat!

Yaman 1993 Hardcore [A tribute to the epic Rave tape series]

I just turned 40 yesterday (wow!) and to celebrate I am very happy to present my magnum opus, this monstrous 4 hour techno journey, an imaginary Berghain set that explores the nooks and crannies of modern techno.
