Pearsall's 2025 Mixes

Here is the latest edition of my long-running Eurotrash mix series, dedicated to the best of 90's European (and a little UK) hard trance and hard acid. This edition is a little bit more sedate than some of the others, starting at 135 bpm and ending at 150 bpm, but it's still packed full of absolutely killer tracks, both classic and obscure. As ever, this is mixed completely on vinyl.

Eurotrash 8 [Old Skool Hard Trance 1995-1999]

I'm very excited to share the fourth mix in a very special project for the summer of 2022: 75 Shadows, my tribute to one of the most important labels in electronic music history ... Moving Shadow!

Over a five week period I will be releasing a new 15 track Moving Shadow tribute mix weekly, each dedicated to a specific year from 1993 to 1997. I think that when you hear the whole series, you will be able to understand just what an amazing and creative label Moving Shadow was, as in the space of just five years they released everything from euphoric breakbeat hardcore to sinister darkcore to jungle anthems to rugged hardstep to smoothly atmospheric drum n' bass to fearsome techstep, and beyond.

75 Shadows Mixes

75 Shadows 004: 1996 [Moving Shadow Tribute Series]

This part 1 of a a very special two mix set dedicated to classic drum n' bass sounds, reimagining nights at two of the most influential London clubs of all time: Speed and Metalheadz. This mix focuses on imagining a night at Speed at the Mars Bar, Soho ... a night I never went to!

From the blog post:

Taking place on a Thursday as well as being located right in the heart of London instead of a massive warehouse on the outskirts meant that Speed attracted a different, more mature crowd, including curious fans of other styles of electronic music as well as people from the music industry. It’s hard to overstate the importance of this night to the development of the lighter side of drum n’ bass – it was a testing ground for new sounds that could then be taken on the road around the UK (and the world!) on the weekends. It was a place where people from the scene – producers, dj’s, a&r’s, hangers-on – could connect, interact and plan collaborations. It was somewhere that this sound could take root and grow, away from the pressure cooker environment of the big raves, where thousands of teenagers wanted the latest mental sounds. It was also a crucial venue for spreading the sound beyond the existing scene, a place where people who would never dream of going to a One Nation or AWOL or Roast could be turned on to high-speed breakbeats.

Eurotrash 9 [Old Skool Hard Trance Vinyl Mix]

If you've been following Sonicrampage for a long time, or even for a short time, you're probably aware that I love fast music! What I haven't typically done in my DJ career has been to make mixes that are more, shall we say, mellow. 

Let's change that! 

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I've recently started to enjoy more downtempo sounds, and so here is this, the first actual proper downtempo / trip-hop mix I've ever recorded. 

Why did I call it a short window to chill? Well, basically because I actually had a very short window to make this mix. I recorded it off the cuff in thirty minutes the night before our summer vacation. It's not perfect, but it's pretty cool! These tunes are quality.

Original Basement Vibes (The Sound Of Choci's Chewns) - Classic Hard Acid Trance!

For the 9th mix in my There & Back series of crate-digging mixes, I return to the golden era of old skool hardcore, 1992-1994, for some serious crate-digging efforts! It's crazy to think that these tunes are now 30 years old, but of course there's no sign of them ever settling down. I wanted to really do some digging, so I've pulled out a premium selection with lots of obscurities and rarities, and I've tried to minimize obvious anthems in favor of some lesser-known bangers. Techstep Mixes

Surgical Sounds: The Doc Scott Tribute

After the multi-genre mash-up that was There & Back 010 I decided to get more specific for the 11th edition in 2024's crate-digging mix series; in this case to really dig into and explore DJ Zinc's brief but really awesome run of producing breakbeat garage in the early 2000's. Those of you who have been following my mixes for a while will know that I'm a huge fan of DJ Zinc - as far as I'm concerned, he's one of the best electronic music producers of all time, and since it's been 13 years since I made a tribute to him I thought it was worth pulling together another tribute mix, this time dedicated to his brief but super fruitful era of early 2000's breakbeat garage. Why? Well, not a very complicated answer: these tracks are great! Enjoy!

The 11th edition of my Squat Rocking series — dedicated to the sounds of the London illegal raves of my youth — is a special tribute to an obscure but brilliant label: Organgrinder Records. Run by Zebedee and Lawrence, Organgrinder never had the name recognition of labels like Stay Up Forever, Routemaster, or Smitten, but it played a vital role in the scene’s ecosystem. Every label mattered! I've always loved their uncompromising, no-nonsense releases, so I thought it was time to shine a little spotlight on them. Enjoy!

Squat Rocking 11 - Organgrinder Records 1997-2001 (A tribute to a key old skool London acid techno label!)

This year I'm kicking off a new mix series to celebrate the first 25 years of this century: 21st Century Music! Each mix will contain only music from this century. To kick things off, here's a mix of proper techno music from the beginning of the century. This is very personal for me, as this is a point at which I was really engaged with techno - listening to it, dancing to it, thinking about it, and playing it. This is the point when I was a student at Edinburgh University, and I was visiting the (sadly no longer with us) Studio 24 on Calton Road practically every weekend with friends to enjoy techno clubs like Dogma, Pillbox, Apex, Subtle Logic, and more. 

This was a time when techno was really fun and interesting, the time of 'hard grooves', of funky techno, of high impact, danceable music, before the walls of minimal closed in and techno got really, really boring for a while. There's been a revival of this style in recent years (see my Stranger tribute mix, for instance), which is not surprising, because this style of techno is just so much more fun than minimal.

Modern Dubstep 2014-2024 [21st Century Music 002]

When my friend Vali from @parallaxrecordings asked if I wanted to drop another Yaman Productions tribute mix for @peoples-station I was all over the idea! Last time around I did a tribute to the 1993 crop of mixes, pulling together tracks from that year's selection of mixtapes. This time around I've focused on the 1994 mix sets, taking four tracks from each of the five dj's that featured that year, and running through them sequentially, like this: Micky Finn -> Randall -> DJ Hype -> Peshay -> LTJ Bukem

A super fun selection, and one for all the true heads; this is a great crossover between hardcore and jungle, right as that whole transformation was happening. Enjoy!

Yaman 1994 Hardcore Jungle (Mix for People's Station)

I'm back in Edinburgh this weekend to celebrate my dear friends Andy & Lizzie's 25th anniversary, and to celebrate I've put together this mix to look back at Rampage, the Edinburgh club might where I first met them. Rampage was a great if not spectacularly successful club night that I co-promoted in the early 2000's with my flatmate Rob Dinsdale and the dj Phil Zero, with Aberdeen's DJ Skelp as the other resident dj alongside Phil and I. We met Andy and Lizzie at the very first party, when they joined us at our Dalkeith Road flat for the afterparty ... many years later, that friendship is still strong! 

With this mix, I wanted to capture some of the energy of that era and the ethos of Rampage, taking in everything from funky techno to acid techno to European hard trance to UK hard / acid trance to full-fledged freeform hardcore. It's a journey!

Pearsall presents Rampage Revisited 2 [Early 2000's Hard Dance!]

One of the best jungle / drum n' bass labels of the last decade has been Hertfordshire's @repertoiresound. I love how fearlessly label bosses @drumtrip and Ben Repertoire have curated the label's sound, putting out everything from murky halfstep to powerful rollers to lush atmospherics to full-scale face-ripping tearouts. I first met Andy and Lizzie when they came to our first Rampage night at the Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh all the way back in February 2001, and we've been great friends ever since! Thrive in 95 (1995 Jungle Mix)

The first of two mixes I have done in tribute to London's legendary Escape From Samsara - one of *the* great hard trance party crews of all time. They popped my raving cherry at age 16 at Brixton's Fridge, and so I thought it was only appropriate to put together an epic 50 track tribute that runs for 210 minutes and total and from 135 to 170 bpm. Along the way I've also tried to pay tribute to Samsara's special vibe, as well as to feature many of the dj's and live acts that were perennial favorites at the party, including of course the legendary residents Beamish and Oberon. Darkside Generation (Vintage 1993 Darkside Hardcore & Jungle Techno Vinyl Mix!)

For my latest mix, I am very excited to jump back 25 years to the halcyon days of 1992, when the UK rave scene was probably at its height. I've tried to capture the diversity of the rave scene at the time by starting with techno before moving on to breakbeat hardcore. OK, this mix is not strictly 1992 stuff, as there are a few bits from 1990/1991, but the general idea is to capture a kind of representative sound of that early rave era, from big anthems like 'Camargue', 'Energy Flash', 'Dreamworld' and 'Trip II The Moon' through to more obscure tunes.

The View From 92 (1992 Rave Music from Techno to Breakbeat Hardcore!) [100% Vinyl Mix]

Carl Cox is pretty much the embodiment of the 'superstar dj'.

One interesting thing about Carl Cox, and something that is often forgotten, is that back in the early 90's he was one of the biggest names in the UK hardcore rave scene, and he fucking rocked at it. In a single set you could hear anything from British breakbeat hardcore to Dutch gabber, with Scottish bouncy techno, hard American acid and European hard trance all thrown in his trademark three-deck blender. 

Since he was so awesome, and so unique in many ways, I wanted my latest mix to be a tribute to what he was doing in his rave heyday - I wanted to boil down two years worth of his musical selections into a single mix, with nice and crisp audio quality and no shitty mc's. To do so, I built a database of 25 tracklistings from 1993/1994 and pulled together a tracklisting of 45 tunes that captures all of the elements of the Carl Cox rave experience. 

I am really happy with this mix, and I hope you enjoy it too!

Rolled In Sunshine (Rolling Jungle - All Killer No Filler!)

30x3 is three mixes, each with 30 tracks, each dedicated to a different chapter in the story of how electronic musicians have utilized the Roland TB-303.

This is the second mix in the series, and it's dedicated to something very close to my heart indeed: acid trance! Few things in my life have matched the sheer wild-eyed pleasure of raving to acid trance music - the euphoric power of trance mixed with the frenzied mayhem of acid? Yes please!

For this mix I have dug deep into my crates to pull together a very loving exploration of this sound, mostly (but not exclusively!) from the 90's, covering all things both acidic and trancey, from pulsing 140 bpm hypnosis to crazed 180 bpm fireworks.

I've been really inspired by the Facebook group Lockdown Legends recently, which has dredged up memories of all the fun times I had clubbing in London from the late 90's to early 2000's, dancing to hard energetic sounds at parties like Frantic, Undertow, Pendragon, Antiworld, Milk, Oblivion, Superfish, etc, so I pulled out a big stack of vinyl and put together this epic thirty track, two hour nostalgia trip.

Hard House Mixes

Forever Fierce (RR Fierce Tribute!)

All true hardcore afficionados will know the epic Yaman series of studio mix tapes, so for this mix I went to Discogs and copied the tracklistings from all of the Yaman tapes from 1993 into a spreadsheet and painstakingly built this tracklisting, taking tracks from each dj and each tape. When you consider the year's tapes came from LTJ Bukem, Randall, DJ Hype, Peshay and Jumping Jack Frost, you know that such a method is pretty much nailed on to deliver a killer selection of tunes!

As you can see, this mix shows off just how awesome hardcore was in 1993, and how it bridged 1992 rave mayhem to 1994 junglism (some of the tracks here were still only dubplates in '93 and didn't come out until later). 1993 was the key year, the last point where the rave scene was united as one, before it fragmented off into many different directions. If you are someone who wasn't even born then and are listening to this mix now, trust me, you're in for a treat!
