Eurotrash Mixes

Eurotrash 7 [Old Skool European Acid Techno Mix]

Here is the latest edition of my long-running Eurotrash mix series, dedicated to the best of 90's European (and a little UK) hard trance and hard acid. This edition is a little bit more sedate than some of the others, starting at 135 bpm and ending at 150 bpm, but it's still packed full of absolutely killer tracks, both classic and obscure. As ever, this is mixed completely on vinyl.

75 Shadows 005: 1997 [Moving Shadow Tribute Series]

Part 2 of a very special two mix set dedicated to classic drum n' bass sounds, reimagining nights at two of the most influential London clubs of all time: Speed and Metalheadz. This mix is dedicated to the sound of Metalheadz, a club that I was lucky enough to attend a number of time, the memory of which is seared into my brain.

From the blog:

 I remember the dancefloor being incredibly tiny, incredibly packed, and incredibly LOUD. You were crammed into a small space, part of a heaving mass of sweaty bodies, surrounded by speakers. Whatever surround sound experience you’ve had at a movie theater was nothing like The Blue Note on Sunday nights … you didn’t just hear the music, you felt it. It was an incredible physical experience – I remember moments where the bass was so powerful I felt my nostrils flapping like in a hurricane, with each bass hit reverberating through my ribcage. The music was incredible, a true future shock … eerie atmospheres overlaid on top of kinetic, shape-shifting beats, undergirded by bass in an incredible variety of forms, from icy shockwaves of sub-bass that were so low in frequency they were at the edges of human hearing, to solid 808-style bass hits, to the occasional funky flourish, to roaring distorted basslines that sounded like Godzilla with a bad case of acid reflux.

This part 1 of a a very special two mix set dedicated to classic drum n' bass sounds, reimagining nights at two of the most influential London clubs of all time: Speed and Metalheadz. This mix focuses on imagining a night at Speed at the Mars Bar, Soho ... a night I never went to!

From the blog post:

Taking place on a Thursday as well as being located right in the heart of London instead of a massive warehouse on the outskirts meant that Speed attracted a different, more mature crowd, including curious fans of other styles of electronic music as well as people from the music industry. It’s hard to overstate the importance of this night to the development of the lighter side of drum n’ bass – it was a testing ground for new sounds that could then be taken on the road around the UK (and the world!) on the weekends. It was a place where people from the scene – producers, dj’s, a&r’s, hangers-on – could connect, interact and plan collaborations. It was somewhere that this sound could take root and grow, away from the pressure cooker environment of the big raves, where thousands of teenagers wanted the latest mental sounds. It was also a crucial venue for spreading the sound beyond the existing scene, a place where people who would never dream of going to a One Nation or AWOL or Roast could be turned on to high-speed breakbeats.

There are few dance acts bigger than @thechemicalbrothers, so putting together a tribute to them is a tall order, no two ways about it. This is my attempt to thread the needle, pulling together a selection of their 90's stuff, from famous singles to album tracks to obscure b-sides to remixes. Parallax Free Party Promo Mix (Old Skool Jungle Mini-Mix)

I think the best ever single grime tape pack / mix release was @rinsefm's amazing Rinsessions Vol. 1, which was released in 2005. A true landmark release, it featured six mixes from some of the scene's leading names, such as Roll Deep, Ruff Sqwad, Slimzee, Plasticman (now known as Plastician), and Logan Sama (plus a UK Garage mix from Jiggy B). For my March mix for @begrime I decided to pay homage to this landmark set by pulling together an all vinyl mix featuring tracks that appeared on Rinsessions. I'm really happy with how it turned out, and hope you enjoy it too!

Eurotrash 9 [Old Skool Hard Trance Vinyl Mix]

If you've been following Sonicrampage for a long time, or even for a short time, you're probably aware that I love fast music! What I haven't typically done in my DJ career has been to make mixes that are more, shall we say, mellow. 

Let's change that! 

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I've recently started to enjoy more downtempo sounds, and so here is this, the first actual proper downtempo / trip-hop mix I've ever recorded. 

Why did I call it a short window to chill? Well, basically because I actually had a very short window to make this mix. I recorded it off the cuff in thirty minutes the night before our summer vacation. It's not perfect, but it's pretty cool! These tunes are quality.

Half Shelf Dubby Dip 2 [Old Skool Vinyl Dubstep set for Begrime]

For my final mix of 2023, here's a special present from me to you - my tribute to my favorite artist of the last decade ... @omunit! I recorded this mix in literally our last night in our old flat in Wilmersdorf before we moved out after ten years - it seemed like a nice bit of synchronicity to record this specific tribute as a final farewell to our home of so many years.

Om Unit (aka Jim Coles to his mom) has been probably my favorite electronic music producer of the last ten years I love how he integrates his distinctively synth-heavy, melodic, bass-forward sound into all kinds of musical frameworks. He's done everything from 110 bpm (and slower) dub / downtempo beats to 140 bpm breaks and dubstep and then all the way up to 160 bpm footwork and 170 bpm jungle and drum n' bass. What's really cool about his work is that even though he works at different tempos and in quote-unquote different genres, his music always sounds like him. In this day and age, it's hard to find artists with a clear and distinctive sound, and he really has that. I love that he doesn't compromise his musical vision, that he bends the genres to his sound, instead of the other way around. 

This mix is focused more on his faster stuff, and I've tried hard to pay appropriate homage ... enjoy!

To kick off my (frankly insane) 780 Project, where I will be putting out 780 tracks (or an average of 15 a week for 52 weeks) across a whole bunch of mixes through 2016, I am super-excited to present this mix of hyper-speed mid-90's European hard trance.

This was music that I truly, truly loved when I was a teenager, and I think it still sounds as exciting as ever. Is it cheesy at points? Yes, sure ... obviously. But God, it is fun.

Yes, sadly, in recent years 'jump-up' has come to mean lowest common denominator squeaky kazoostep, but the original version still stands the test of time - hard-hitting breaks, heavy bass and plenty of vintage hip-hop attitude. Old Skool Mixes

Darkside Generation (Vintage 1993 Darkside Hardcore & Jungle Techno Vinyl Mix!)

Carl Cox is pretty much the embodiment of the 'superstar dj'.

One interesting thing about Carl Cox, and something that is often forgotten, is that back in the early 90's he was one of the biggest names in the UK hardcore rave scene, and he fucking rocked at it. In a single set you could hear anything from British breakbeat hardcore to Dutch gabber, with Scottish bouncy techno, hard American acid and European hard trance all thrown in his trademark three-deck blender. 

Since he was so awesome, and so unique in many ways, I wanted my latest mix to be a tribute to what he was doing in his rave heyday - I wanted to boil down two years worth of his musical selections into a single mix, with nice and crisp audio quality and no shitty mc's. To do so, I built a database of 25 tracklistings from 1993/1994 and pulled together a tracklisting of 45 tunes that captures all of the elements of the Carl Cox rave experience. 

I am really happy with this mix, and I hope you enjoy it too!

Rolled In Sunshine (Rolling Jungle - All Killer No Filler!)

If you're like me, you're spending a lot of time at home at the moment, and, assuming you are staying healthy (I hope so!), you need some music to listen to, right? I got you covered! This is a tribute to the early recordings of the legendary @djhypednb, East London's original scratchmaster and rave hero. To show off the amazing changes in his music back in the 90's, this mix takes four of his tracks / remixes from each year from 1993 to 1998 and then lines them up in chronological order, so that you can clearly hear the progression from hardcore to jungle to jump-up to early liquid funk. What better way to celebrate the tenth edition of my Squat Rocking series of mixes dedicated to the sounds of London's squat party scene than with a tribute to the one and only Chris Liberator? Awesome dj, fantastic producer, this mix pulls together 27 of his solo productions, collaborations, and remixes from the 1990's, all mixed on vinyl by myself in one single unplanned and totally improvised set. It's fucking aving it!

Squat Rocking Mixes

Squat Rocking 10: Chris Liberator in the 90's (Tribute to London acid techno legend)

All true hardcore afficionados will know the epic Yaman series of studio mix tapes, so for this mix I went to Discogs and copied the tracklistings from all of the Yaman tapes from 1993 into a spreadsheet and painstakingly built this tracklisting, taking tracks from each dj and each tape. When you consider the year's tapes came from LTJ Bukem, Randall, DJ Hype, Peshay and Jumping Jack Frost, you know that such a method is pretty much nailed on to deliver a killer selection of tunes!

As you can see, this mix shows off just how awesome hardcore was in 1993, and how it bridged 1992 rave mayhem to 1994 junglism (some of the tracks here were still only dubplates in '93 and didn't come out until later). 1993 was the key year, the last point where the rave scene was united as one, before it fragmented off into many different directions. If you are someone who wasn't even born then and are listening to this mix now, trust me, you're in for a treat!
