Torus - Torus EP [Sonic Router Records]

Like all good things, it’s taken a while to surface, but after three years of existing on the internet as a website, mix blog and general theatre of opinion, Sonic Router is now also a record label. To quote one of our good friends our label was ‘established after receiving the sort of demo that makes you want to start a record label’. The demo in question came from 18 year old Torus, (formerly known as Deadstokdonut; the moniker under which he released ‘Television Spleen’ on Lowriders Record’s Beatitude compilation) and his self titled debut EP.

6 tracks long it’s a deft exploration of mood that sets a torrent of found samples, ambient swirls and little wayward riffs to post-Dilla drum patterns. It’s hazy, crackly hangover music. A collection of tracks that manage to sound archaic before they’ve even been mixed down, fusing Joeri Woudstra’s unique approach to production with a sense of isolation and introspection.

“I’ve been making a lot of music over the past year and a half, which includes a lot of stuff I wasn’t really proud of when I listened back to it after it was finished;” Woudstra offers when asked about the vision for his music. “The idea behind this EP is that I wanted to make tracks that were deeper than just some throw away beats. I wanted to go in and truly create an environment; tracks that I really put some emotion into and that I could be proud of to be released as a whole.”

“I come from The Hague in the Netherlands and we kinda have all the environments you could think of put together,” he continues. “We’ve got the beach, we got forests and woods, we got plains and we’ve got downtown and sometimes the whole city is covered in snow. In my music I move away from the crowdedness of the city to create a more natural and organic environment; but I also like taking a bit of the static interference from the bustling city and putting it all together into some sort of ambience.”

The Torus EP will be released on limited edition cassette (with an additional beat tape of unreleased material included on the B side). The digital version of the EP will be extended with remixes from Slugabed and  Dynooo.

Sometimes club music doesn’t need to be too clever. Sometimes all you need is an insistent groove and a hook. Allow nuance, subtlety or layers upon layers of carefully sculpted found sounds; sometimes the drive to dance to a piece of music overtakes the rational [over] thinking and just inspires movement. That’s precisely what this trio of original productions from 19 year old Brummy, Wattville aka Matthew Evans, does incredibly well to inaugurate Sonic Router Records’ debut vinyl release.  

“The Wattville project initially was just going to be this fun outlet for music that I felt was going to be cool for me to play out,” Evans states when pressed on the origins of the project. “Now it’s become a lot more serious than that. The previous projects I worked on were never club music; it was more music that easily became a background soundtrack. I no longer wanted that; I wanted to create music that forces the listener notice it.”

With the double A-side tracks ‘Clan’ and ‘We Jostle’ Evans does that emphatically and notably, with incredibly minimal tools. ‘Clan’, for instance, is just drums, albeit a pounding drum track with lashings of pitched percussion and the occasional vocal chant; but the impact that his staccato rhythm has throughout is so very instant. The gratification of it and the swirling, maddening melody of ‘We Jostle’, is painstakingly obvious.

“I’m currently living in Elephant & Castle,” Evans continues. “It has a cultural richness that I had only been a part of up until the age of about eight, when I lived on Wattville Road in Handsworth in Birmingham. It holds a real affinity to E&C as a place. When I was a kid my dad was training to be a vicar and we attended a predominantly Afro-Caribbean church where we’d have meals afterwards, and they would put on all this incredible ethnic music that I used to love. The day I got to E&C I walked around the markets and that same rhythm was all I heard.”

Wattville eschews this propensity for intricate percussion that he displays across ‘Clan’ and ‘We Jostle’ on ‘Etching’ though, counterpointing the rhythmic flamboyancy with a muggy stripped back roller that’s more seedy late night Saturday in Middle England than any kind of totemic world music hybrid.

Wattville - Clan (Archie Pelago Overdub) [SRR002]

The third release on Sonic Router Records is a self-titled ten track LP from the shady producer, Hav Lyfe. Honestly, it feels like the kind of project we started the label to house: a completely individual 32 minutes of roughly spun, improvised tracks that perfectly captures a flurry of Hav’s creativity. 10 tracks long the album is composed out of his trademark raw, textural sketches that sometimes get strung over the top of brooding crunched out rhythms or end up finding an internal rhythm within the distorted loops and folds of sound.

“I don’t have much,” he admits when asked about his production processes. “I work on an old Pentium and record straight to this little mp3 player I’ve got. It ain’t much, but it’s cheap and sounds weird and looks great…”

Whilst his (lack of) equipment might define how the audio sounds, there’s a real honesty and directness present in the material - like on ‘Civivic’ where Hav draws out this time stretched drum loop that feels like it could go on forever, or on ‘Dion2Cool’ and ‘Mond’ where he just bluntly repeats the main phrase stoically, because he can. The Hav Lyfe album is a collection of these kinds of short expressions; a hypnotic headphone record that really manages to draw you in to his way of thinking.

“This music is just for me,” Hav adds in his usual distantly concise manner; “it keeps me sane.”

The digital version of Hav Lyfe’s self-titled debut album will be released on 4th February 2013 with the 12” following a week later on the 11th.

It's something WANDA made especially for the release of Hav Lyfe's debut album - it's kind of like an aural document of how he visualises the mysterious producer.  It's a 10 minute long barrage of drones and tones made in WANDA's own uncompromising style.

Bambooman’s production work is a little bit of an anomaly; on the one hand it feels infallibly clean with a heavy emphasis on the punch of his kick drums, but it’s notably reliant on textures at the same time. The way he makes that level of contrast between the found sounds and the synthesized tones work is what first caught our ear through his own Sound Healers compilations and his remixes for people like Crewdson, but with his Hollowed EP the Leeds based beatsmith explores that tonal juxtaposition even further across seven original tracks. 

“A large part of the EP is made up of recordings I have made along with sounds I have synthesized or vocals sent from friends,” he offers of his processes. “It’s a way I’ve been trying to work more and more. It’s basically a collection of tracks which represented the styles I was messing with at that time.”

A hip hop producer at heart, Bambooman’s experiments tend to temper the slower tempos, revelling in that slower pace. But whether he’s simply decorating the lurch and snap of tracks like ‘Stacks’ or ‘Skip’ with airy pads so that his enveloping basslines pull the focus or toying with the voices of his synths on beats like ‘Frosted’ or ‘Hollowed’, he manages to make his output sit comfortably with the low end addled zeitgeist.

To celebrate both the one year anniversary of Sonic Router Records and the milestone of our first release, the young Dutch producer, Torus, returns a year to the day with a brand new 5 track EP. Made up of three original tracks and remixes from Parisian producer Dream Koala and Californian artist Spaceghost, it’s the freely downloadable/pay-what-you-want bridge between his first self-titled EP and his follow up, the Feeel EP which is currently scheduled for a June release.

Across the original tracks Torus builds deftly on the sense of mood he created with his first release. At first sprawling himself over ‘2mrrw’ and ‘Leaves’ - two tracks who’s strength lies in the way they stretch themselves out through slow builds and found sounds – he hits harder than ever before with the pronounced kick drum of ‘Shallow Depth’, showing a different, more club focused, side to his production.

After the boom of pitch perfect, cleaner than clean house-music-with-heavy-bass deflated and subsided, fuzz and decay are two tools that seem to have crept into a lot of producer’s arsenals more and more. And whilst it’s important to acknowledge the fact that emphasizing rough textures isn’t really something new - it’s a concept that artists whose work has endlessly influenced the direction of our record label have built careers out of - it’s definitely an approach that’s had an impact on the musical output of Chris Sallows.

Working as Microburst, he’s released music on Svetlana Industries and Cleaning Tapes, but through accepting and developing his output to incorporate more distorted elements, he emerged out of his Dorset studio with a fully-fledged new artist project: Fuewa. Birth Palace, is the first official outing under his new moniker and across the 6 tracks he explores the reams of potential he found amongst a sound palette of blown out kick drums and jagged pads.

“This sound has slowly been creeping into my Microburst productions for a while now and I felt the need for separation before it got out of hand,” Sallows offers on the genesis of the project. “Fuewa is a channel for the rougher, murkier side of things - something less concerned with cleanliness and more about texture, feeling and sound.”

Opening with the sprawling ‘Bhlok’, Sallows paints a bruised and unpredictable world where his own peculiar impression of slow-mo house is powered by drone and fractions of course percussion. ‘La Void’, ‘Undress_Invert’ and ‘Time Piece’ are very much the melodic centrepieces of an EP that captures and balances his newfound sense of ruggedness perfectly.
