Ever since Animal Trainer launched their global party campaign, the Swiss duo’s unique brand of ‘slow rave’ has captured the imaginations of countless electronic music lovers all over the world and spread their gospel to thousands, if not millions, of music lovers. Adrian Flavor and Samy Jackson are the two men behind Animal Trainer, a dynamic duo which grew up on a diet of the world’s very best electronic music artists in their hometown, Zurich. Driven by passion for the music and an insatiable appetite for the party, Adrian and Samy have become two of the hottest properties on the international circuit and represent the epitome of what Switzerland’s new generation of artists has to offer. Raised in a city with arguably the strongest club scene in Switzerland, Animal Trainer made their name through a series of parties called ‘Rakete’, which still take place at the infamous Hive club. The duo had already spent some time refining their skills as DJs before launching the event, but their sterling reputation was cemented at the club. It was only a matter of time before the ambitious duo pushed things a step further by injecting their love and passion into creating their own music. In the years since their first release Animal Trainer have maintained a constant focus on high quality club music, staying relevant when others have followed the hype, and evolving into a force to be reckoned with. They are party boys who take their music very seriously, but are never serious themselves – it’s a winning combination that has kept them one step ahead and on a constant upwards trajectory. Of course, I'm always happy when I get to start a new podcast series. This mix falls in a time in which Covid conditionally here again many things become possible. Live music may be played again. That's why I gave this mix the working title back together again. At the same time the name of the last song. A homage to my loyal followers who are now allowed to be reunited with me at the places where I play live. How nice.

~Zeit für ein schleichendes Frage & Antwort Spiel~

>>Wer seid ihr und woher kommt ihr?
Wir sind Marliblue & Sofyah aka Marlene & Sophia und wohnen in unserer Wahlheimat Berlin, kommen aber beide aus den etwas südlicheren Gefilden Deutschlands, weshalb uns der Hauptstadt-Winter immer besonders grau und endlos vorkommt. 

>>Wie kamt ihr zum Auflegen?
In prä-pandemischen Zeiten hat unser Lieblingsclub namens Beate Uwe mal einen Aufruf auf der Suche nach DJ-Newcomer*innen gestartet. So sind wir wohl überhaupt erst auf die Idee gekommen - vom halb ernst gemeinten Vorhaben zum klassischen Quarantäne-Hobby bis zu den ersten kleinen Gigs auf Partys von Freund*innen. Dass wir unseren allerersten Club-Gig dann in unserem geliebten Beate Uwe spielen durften - damit hat sich der Kreis irgendwie geschlossen!

>>Was gefällt euch besonders an "langsamer" Musik?
Langsame Musik hat oft so eine treibende Tiefe, dass sie uns auf eine ganz andere Art und Weise mitnimmt als schnellere Sounds. Auch beim Tanzen steigen bei uns mit sinkenden bpm gefühlt Ausgelassenheit und Bewegungsradius. Was das Auflegen angeht, finden wir es aber auch super spannend, wie man den Vibe von Tracks verändern kann, wenn man sie langsamer spielt. Neben klassischem Downtempo haben wir ja auch viel runtergepitchten melodischen Techno oder Deep bzw. Organic House in petto. 

>>Was hat euch für das Set inspiriert?
Wir haben mal ein paar ältere Tracks aus unserer Sammlung ausgepackt, die wir schon lange spielen wollen, die aber eher in einen Podcast zum Zuhausehören als auf den Dancefloor passen. Entweder, weil sie etwas melancholischer daherkommen oder weil sie so wild und verspielt sind, dass man sie bei einem spontanen Live-Set nicht so easy reinbringen könnte. Ansonsten sind aber auch einige neue Lieblingstracks dabei! Insgesamt ist es damit ein schöner Mix aus etwas dreamy bis deepem Winterblues-Sound, ein bisschen wummerndem Downtempo und ein paar langsam gespielten Techno-Brettern.

>>Was ist euer aktueller Lieblingstrack oder Set?
Letztes Jahr haben wir uns beim Nation-Closing ziemlich doll in Caleesi & Sarah Kreis verliebt und hören die Sets seitdem rauf und runter! Wenn wir uns für eins entscheiden müssten, wäre es vermutlich die Aufnahme von Mezcal Amores 2019. 

>>An welchen schönen Moment denkt ihr in Verbindung mit elektronischer Musik gerne zurück?
Da gibt es einfach so so viele! Downtempo hat für uns beide auch insofern eine große Bedeutung, da sich unsere Freundschaft durch diese geteilte Leidenschaft erst so richtig intensiviert hat. Am liebsten denken wir wahrscheinlich an unsere zahlreichen gemeinsamen Barfußtanz-Sonntage im wundervollen Beate Uwe zurück.

>>Was wünscht ihr euch in Zukunft fürs Nachtleben?
Zunächst mal, dass es überhaupt wieder existiert! Auch wenn Clubs jetzt offiziell als Kulturstätten gelten, kommen sie insgesamt wohl immer noch zu kurz, wenn es um Verdrängung oder den Umgang in Pandemiezeiten geht. Wahrscheinlich brauchen wir in der breiten Masse einfach mehr Akzeptanz und Verständnis dafür, was Clubkultur und Nachtleben, Safe Spaces und kollektive Glücksgefühle auf der Tanzfläche für das Individuum bedeuten können.

We are super excited for our newest guest mix, Institution 058: Jake Flaherty (Toronto).

We have had the absolute pleasure of meeting Jake on more than one occasion. Awesome human. Jake is a joy to watch live. His smile is infectious, and his passion shows through in how he plays. We asked him a couple of questions:

Institution: Jake, who was your biggest influence, musically?
JF: My biggest influence is undoubtedly John Digweed. I've spent countless hours listening to his sets and I travel the world to see him as often as I can. He has taught me everything I know about what it means to properly program a set and the importance of trying to think several tracks ahead. He famously said "The most important thing is how you program and how you choose your records. That really does sort out who is a good DJ and who is just playing records," and that has really stuck with me. I try to live up to that as best as I can. 

Institution: What was your biggest career moment?
JF: My biggest career moment to date was playing a sold-out party at Coda on October 9, 2021. There was a lineup down the street by 10PM and the house was absolutely rocking by 10:30. I was opening and I knew that my job for the night was to warm things up - but I was able to open things up a bit at the end of my set. The house lights came up and I was able to finally see just how full the room was - and that's when all the hours I've spent on this hobby of mine all came together.

This one is made for dancing. Turn it up.

In 2022, Fid Codo started his DJ project fueled by a passion for pitched-down dark disco. Exploring the multifaceted realms of this genre, Fid Codo traverses through gritty indie dance, obscure synthwave sounds, nasty guitar riffs and eccentric acid vibes. Yet, amidst the darkness, there is also an openness to brighter melodies that dip into Italo and Nu-Disco.
Motivated by the absence of suitable party options within these genres, Fid Codo launched the "Komos" party series, aimed to excite his hometown of Düsseldorf with this vibrant musical spectrum.
