Grosso is the best instrument we have produced to date. Period.

With Grosso, Sonokinetic BV is changing the paradigm for orchestral phrase-based instruments… again! Before our Minimal library, the level of control, whilst retaining the authentic sound that live recordings bring to the party, was unheard of. We have gotten so much positive feedback on Minimal that a ‘sequel’ was unavoidable. Mere sequels is not what we do though at Sonokinetic, so if you look at what Grosso brings to the table, you will see an evolved entity that is a homo-sapiens to Minimal’s homo-erectus. 
We have conceived this instrument from the ground up, using parts of the Minimal engine and reimagining many other things to accommodate for the added flexibility Grosso brings to the table. The main difference, apart from the obviously upbeat nature of the recorded material and the addition of a choir part and a taiko and non-melodic percussion section, is that we split out the orchestral sections into more parts. Strings and choir are split in low - mid - high, woodwinds and brass into low and high, percussion into taiko and more traditional orchestral percussion. All of these elements have been carefully composed to work well with all of the others, resulting in millions of possible combinations of sounds.
The nature and sheer amount of this raw material, and the added flexibility we needed to offer to you in an intuitive way, led us to a completely new interface style, and it made us split up the instrument into different Kontakt .nki’s. Don’t worry though, we have laid out the keyswitches in a way that still makes it possible to play this instrument ‘Minimal-style’ with the whole orchestra on one midi channel.
Grosso is a 12/8 feel library, and we have configured the engine to work in both 4/4 and 12/8 time signatures within your DAW. Though the instrument was conceived with trailer and action styles in mind, the finished product is capable of so much more, limited only by your imagination.
Check out our demo section to hear some of the compositions made by the incredibly talented composers in our beta team, inspired by Grosso. In fact, much of the early feedback we got from these guys included the word ‘inspirational’ as much as the word ‘exceptional’. If there’s ever an instrument that can help you get out of a funk when you need it most, it’s this one. We have even included a randomiser button to provide you with different pattern combinations at the click of a button.
To top off the collection we have added a ‘transition builder’ instrument that is aimed at gluing parts together, and building up towards climaxes. It includes brass and woodwind crescendo chords, and recognises different chord types, like diminished, augmented and dominant 7th. Chords are constructed on the spot from a collection of recorded intervals. This builder instrument also contains percussion and taiko fills, and a fully playable multisampled taiko ensemble patch, both as an ensemble and individual drums. Many of our phrase-based libraries are conceived with a specific usage in mind... Maximo for intense action, Sotto for subtle scoring and Grosso for dramatic chases. The performances captured in these libraries have been put to use by our composer base in varied and surprising ways. For this reason we can't wait to hear what you create using our most intense library yet... "Espressivo".
The sounds of horror, terror and suspense are as old as cinema itself, from Herrmann's "Psycho" & "Vertigo" to Goldsmith's "Alien" & "The Omen". These dissonant strings, stabbing brass sections, skittering percussion and aleatoric woodwinds are as synonymous to the genres, making our hair stand on end and forcing us to avert our eyes from the screen. Many other composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Charles Ives have been our inspiration too, creating a palette of sounds which provide both inspiration and intimidation. 
In the recording sessions we pushed our orchestra to their physical and mental limit and they rewarded us with some extraordinary playing techniques that would be just impossible for a composer to pull off using multi-sampled libraries. Our strings, brass, woodwind and percussion players wrung everything out of their instruments. After they were done we wrapped the performances in a brand new Kontakt engine to ensure maximum flexibility and playability from the hundreds of phrases on offer. For the first time ever with a Sonokinetic library you can trigger up to 48 phrases simultaneously (from the hundreds available), all tempo synced and with multiple microphone options. Pads, rhythmic loops, crescendi, melodies and stabs all meld together in one gloriously terrifying instrument sure to add realism, authenticity and a dose of drama to your cues.

Exquisite Intimacy; Many people assume that Sonokinetic’s signature sound is grand and statuesque, as we fill our recording space with many talented players and layer phrases together in our bespoke Kontakt engines. However, sometimes it’s great to dial things down for a more personal feel, and that’s just what we’ve done with Indie. The style of these intimate ensemble phrases take their lead from modern TV drama, boutique film and independent video games with a naked and personal sound.
Recording smaller versions of our string, woodwind and brass ensembles just wasn’t enough this time around, so we’ve also supplemented them with a huge selection of melodic percussion phrases. For the first time ever, string quartet phrases have been included, perfect for layering with the other ensembles to bring the focus back to your compositions. The overall emphasis here is on the lightest of touches, from delicate violin duos and solo clarinet to harp glissandi and gently played mallets. 
In fact, the melodic percussion deserves a special mention as we made sure to catch all the subtly and wonder of these instruments, including the seldom-sampled concert cimbalom, a dulcimer-like instrument with a unique sound. The dreamy melodic textures we composed for Indie were delicately played by our performers in the same space as the other ensembles. Marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, crotales, upright piano, celesta and concert harp bring an intense personal feel to the whole collection.
We felt that the Indie recordings were well suited to the playback engine which we originally debuted with ‘Noir’, our jazz-drenched section library. That means that the 12 preset keys each hold a single performance. Mapping phrases like this makes it easy to combine melodies and harmonies and hear real-time performances intertwine with one another. 
The randomize feature also makes a welcome return, which conjures twelve complimentary phrases with every press. There’s also the option to randomize per orchestral section, either string quartet, string ensemble, woodwinds, brass quintet or melodic percussion
