Mirage brings me back to my first plane ride at age 7, heading to Austria with my family. I was filled with nervous excitement, the first real butterflies in my stomach! I read about planes to get an idea of what I was in for, but as we lifted off the ground and into the sky the feeling was not like anything I read about! I was awestruck. A wave of calm washed over me, and so full of wonder. I didn’t have to try to preserve that moment in my memory, it just was. This piece took about a day to compose. Through the years I’ve found in that building the form, the foundation for a piece of music has the most challenging part of developing an idea into something cohesive. Not at all the case for this piece. And if you analyze it, it might seem complicated with the harmony used and the score, with all of its changing meters, but it wasn’t created through careful research and analysis. 

These experiences are important reminders for me to stay open and curious, allowing creativity to effortlessly flow, a method I aspire to cultivate in my day-to-day life.

A line I wrote around the same time, about flow and it's role in the creative process rings especially true when I reflect on Mirage:
"Calm, calm complexity waits patiently, releases nature effortlessly.”
