Coyote are DJs/producers Timm Sure and Richard Hampson (aka Ampo). Since first meeting after both becoming residents at the historically important Venus club in Nottingham, between them they spent the 90s with residencies at many of the decades most seminal parties. As well as making regular appearances at countless events such as Andrew Weatherall's Sabresonic parties and Open All Hours at Ministry Of Sound, Ampo even guested as tour-DJ for Underworld.

Coyote officially came into being in 2004 when Timm and Ampo decided to start making music together. Since taking on the moniker, Coyote have had a wealth of releases and remixes on a huge array of labels including International Feel, Aficionado, and their own Is It Balearic? imprint, which was established in 2007. Initially conceived as merely a platform for their limited edition Coyote releases, the label now boasts an impressive list of artists and remixers that reads like a who's who of the Balearic music scene. Thanks to their distinctive sound as both DJs and music makers, Coyote find themselves regularly invited to play music all across the UK and further afield in places like Japan, Ibiza and Scandinavia. 

This, their Sungazing mix, is Coyote's second guest-mix for The Sunrise Mixtapes. Timm Sure: 'It's a mix of two halves. The first half is soundtracking a 30 minute sun-gazing at sunrise, feeling the regenerative energy of the solar waves absorb into you. The second half is letting the new spark of energy take hold and embrace the new day'.

One of the most elusive Italian library records on the "Edi-Pan" label. What we have here is another Remigio Ducros and Luciano Simoncini (Arawak, Jason Black, etc) sure shot! Fantastic record for those who are into the classic Simoncini/Ducros sound. Very reminiscent of the "Accadde A.." and Jason Black recordings. What you can expect are tightly knitted and compressed drums, stoned flute sections, shouting horns, Fender Rhodes Piano, and that signature spacey Wah Wah guitar that's on all of the earlier Simoncini recordings. As with many of the Ducros and Simoncini recordings, it seems to be a geographical tour of America, and shows their take on our culture at the time. Variations on the Sgambetto - Sgambata theme / stoned Accadde A flute / hip hop beats / 'popping' percussion / fender bass / rhodes e-piano etc. Daniela Casa is probably the girl playing all the disco wah wah and cosmic fuzz distortions. Great for DJs!

COSMIC COMMUTE

London-born and Tokyo-based, Max Essa has spent over two decades crafting lush, melodic soundscapes that blur the lines between balearic, cosmic disco, and ambient pop. Emerging in the '90s on Warp and Paper Recordings, he found his true artistic stride after relocating to Japan in 2008. Since then, Essa has become a central figure in Tokyo’s underground scene, curating events like Zim Zam Zu! at Bar Bonobo and releasing music on labels such as Music For Dreams, Hell Yeah!, and Is It Balearic?

Essa’s style is warm, escapist, and deeply cinematic-often inspired by specific places: Okinawan beaches, Mediterranean ferries, or late-night Tokyo rooftops. His releases, like Lanterns, When I'm Homeward Bound, and The Clean Trip (with David Harks), radiate nostalgia and serenity, wrapped in silky synths and timeless grooves.

Beyond producing, Essa curates, mentors, and connects cultures-compiling Japanese ambient gems on Oto No Wa, together with Ken Hidaka and Dr Rob, and spotlighting local artists through interviews and collaborations. Whether on record or behind the decks, Max Essa invites listeners into a world where emotion, space, and memory guide the rhythm.

Brennan is a good pal, a fellow BMX enthusiast, and a terrific DJ & Producer. He was a natural for a first guest. In true fraternal Irish style Brennan broke my balls, but also graciously
helped with some of the arduous setup issues for this undertaking. He left with my studio keys (!), but also gave me the complete episodes of “Trailer Park Boys”, one of his native land’s
greatest cultural contributions. Special thanks to Tariq Abdus-Sabur and Sean Brennan for all their help on this, and for putting up with me & BG.
