Web Web with their sixth album in seven years and with a new touch. More psychedelic, sometimes more krauty than before. 
This time, WEB WEB in their original line-up (without Max Herre) have (again) chosen a special guest: JJ Whitefield (The Poets Of Rhythm / Karl Hector & The Malcouns / Syrup), who contributes the fantastic guitar sound.
His riffs are sometimes funky as with the Poets Of Rhythm or Syrup, or more psychedelic as with Karl Hector & The Malcouns or his many live and studio recordings with Embryo. The sound color of his guitar gives the album the thrust into the wonderful atmosphere of spacey jazz-kraut bands of the seventies.

The concept of the album should be the exact opposite of the previous WEB MAX album (WEB MAX II): Back to the (WEB WEB) roots, with spontaneous, improvised pieces, fragments, ideas that mean the greatest possible liberty and live spirit.
And the idea of bringing JJ Whitefield on board was just as unpredictable and improvised: one day before the session, Roberto Di Gioia thought to himself:
"JJ and I have always lived in Munich. But unfortunately, we've never really crossed paths. I'm a great admirer of his art, his music, his way of playing. He is so inspiring because he doesn't compromise. He plays in his own way, he's not a copy of anyone or anything."

So Roberto spontaneously called JJ and asked him if he could imagine playing on one or two songs. JJ immediately said yes, and a day later he was in the studio.
They actually only played two songs: One lasted 25 minutes, the other 45 minutes. And most of the tracks (apart from a few others without him) for the album "Plexus Plexus", which means something like: Network, interweaving.
The 14 compositions were created over two days, recorded by Jan Krause (Beanfield) in Munich. The energetic live session lasted twice 10 hours, and everyone - Roberto Di Gioia (Rhodes, Fender Precision Bass, Moog, Mellotron, percussion), Christian von Kaphengst (Fender Precision Bass, Rhodes), Peter Gall (drums, percussion, Fender Rhodes), Tony Lakatos (tenor saxophone, flute) - was “on fire” to the core. The musicians switched instruments to create a completely different overall sound: Kaphengst on Fender Rhodes sounds different to Roberto, his playing has a different harmonic structure, and Roberto on bass is familiar from numerous Max Herre recordings, or from Till Brönner's album “Till Brönner”, and of course also from the “Let Yourself Be Loved” by Joy Denalane, which he produced and which was released on Motown Records.

Michael Reinboth (Compost) was present at the session and spontaneously made a small request: "Hey, why don't you play Moondog's "Bird's Lament"? So they listened to the original once (!) and the guys played it through twice in their irresistibly professional way. 

The cover artwork is once again by Jan Steins and continues the series of fantastic illustrations for all Web Web albums.

Presenting the first single taken from Gabriele Poso’s forthcoming compilation on Mr Bongo, Ritmo Italiano ‘Unspoken Sounds of Italian Tamburo’. Tony Cercola ‘Lumumba’ is just one of the mesmerising tracks that Sardinian multi-instrumentalist, percussionist and producer, Poso, has curated for this captivating new compilation. It’s an under-the-radar, percussive Italo-disco / proto-house dancer, originally landing on the Italian label Tendance in 1987.

“How can one not be overwhelmed by the energetic force of Tony Cercola? An incredible artist who emerged in the 1970s within the so-called Neapolitan Power movement,” Gabriele mentions. Cercola’s track ‘Lumumba’ showcases the vibrance of Italy’s cultural crossroads, with influences from the Mediterranean, Africa and Europe all rolled into this dynamic tribal whirlwind.

Built upon a foundation of gated snares, flavourful bongos and a driving synth pop bassline, ‘Lumumba’ oozes ‘80s dancefloor energy. Reverberating chords and deft keys are layered up in masterful fashion, as earworm chants and a hypnotising lead vocal draw you in deeper. It's a perfect crossover track for a leftfield electronic dancefloor set and is tailormade to ramp up the intensity when the time is right. 


Lumumba

n an ever-expanding musical universe, Azymuth have long existed as a celestial giant, drawing countless artists, musicians and followers into their orbit. Marking fifty years since their 1975 debut album Azimuth, their new album Marca Passo proves that the band’s alchemic brew of Brazilian jazz-funk and cosmic samba soul remains as vital as ever, as the group honours the profound legacy of their departed founders.

Recorded in Rio de Janeiro, Marca Passo is the first full-length release since the passing of founding drummer Ivan "Mamão" Conti in 2023, following the earlier loss of keyboardist José Roberto Bertrami in 2012. Alex Malheiros, the sole remaining original member, sees his stewardship of the band’s musical legacy as his spiritual duty. He is joined by the equally devoted Kiko Continentino (Milton Nascimento, Djavan) on keyboards, who has been with the group since 2016, and new recruit Renato Massa (Marcos Valle, Ed Motta) on drums.

Yet since their earliest recorded music, Azymuth have always been far greater than the sum of their parts. The "three-man orchestra’s" unmistakable sound is rooted in Brazil's MPB studio scene of the 1970s and early 1980s—a time when artists blended traditional Brazilian rhythms with global jazz, rock, and emerging psychedelic and progressive elements. Marca Passo continues this legacy, seamlessly fusing Brazilian musical traditions with global influences while showcasing the exceptional musicianship that powers Azymuth's distinctive, multi-dimensional sound.

The album is produced by studio mastermind Daniel Maunick, responsible for Azymuth’s two previous studio albums, Fênix in 2016 and Aurora in 2011. Daniel’s credits also include albums by Marcos Valle, Sabrina Malheiros and Terry Callier. Azymuth also invited Daniel’s father, British jazz-funk royalty Jean Paul “Bluey” Maunick, of Incognito, to play guitar on a new version of Azymuth’s eighties classic “Last Summer In Rio”, in tribute to the song’s composer, José Roberto Bertrami. Equally, “Samba Pro Mamao” is a new composition dedicated to Azymuth’s beloved original drummer, Ivan “Mamão” Conti.

Marca Passo releases on limited edition blue, red & black vinyl LP editions, CD and digitally on the 6th June 2025, via Far Out Recordings, supported by European and North American tours.

‘War of the Hearts’ comes next, with this number being a creative reimagining of the Sade penned and performed classic. Key motifs are reflected and morphed from the original, with less of a focus on electronic instrumentation and more attention paid to guitar work. The vocal work here, once again delivered by Taylor Taylor and supported by Beltran, are something to be admired, with the interplay of melodic elements pulled off to a T.
