Way out in the wilds of Central Asia, on the Kazakh-Uzbek border, lies the toxic remains of a dying sea ... the Aral Sea. For thousands of years, this sea was a life-giver, bringing food, trade, and civilization. Covering an area the size of Ireland, it was the fourth largest freshwater lake in the world. But then, in the middle of the 20th Century, something happened. An irrigation project went wrong, depriving the sea of vital water. In its place came toxic chemicals, poisons, and shores of unbreathable dust. Today, the sea is so deadly it’s been called the Silent Chernobyl.
We humans have turned an ancient oasis to a modern desert ravaged by cancer-causing storms ...  this is the story of the Aral Sea.

Hello to all Sound Clouders, 
Its been a long time since I last uploaded a music. My music making came to a sudden halt. A lot has happened, shifted my base from Dubai to Calcutta. Oh it's Kolkata! Had to my keyboards and wind-up everything packed and shipped to Kolkata. Then reinstall the sound studio from the scratch ... and finally I'm able do my music again! Happiness. Markandaya's Dream

This is the Part II of a Three Part Composition I’ve working on the mammoth Ibis Trilogy from writer Amitav Ghosh. The first was "Sea of Poppies" which I created and uploaded here on SC 3 years back … recently I finished the second "The River of Smoke". Hope you enjoy listening to it as I did making it! By the way the Chinese section of the composition is centered around a loop used from the GarageBand Collection. 

River of Smoke is a novel by Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh. It is the second volume of the Ibis trilogy. The novel has a rich tapestry of characters from various cultural and geographical backgrounds whose common interest is trade (mostly opium) in China. The story is set in Canton’s Fanqui-Town, a small strip of land used by foreigners to trade with local Chinese traders, a year before the first opium war. The plot evolves around three ships off the coast of Canton, in the year 1838. The Anahita, owned by Bahram Modi, a Parsi opium trader from Bombay, the Redruth, owned by Fitcher Penrose, on an expedition to collect rare species of plants from China and the Ibis (from Sea of Poppies, the first book of the trilogy) carrying two convicts Neel Rattan, a Bengali Zamindar and Ah Fatt a criminal from Canton. The story traces the lives of these principal characters in Canton. Bahram Modi an opium trader from Bombay, carries out successful expeditions to China and creates considerable wealth. Bahram also has a son Ah Fatt through a Chinese boat woman, unknown to his family back in Bombay. Fitcher Penrose, a botanist, is on an expedition to China to collect rare plants. He is joined by Paulette Lambert, daughter of a French botanist, in his search for the rare Golden camellias. Neel and Ah Fat have escaped from Ibis and they meet Bahram Modi, Ah Fat's father. Neel joins Bahram's as his Munshi ... 

All these rich tapestry of characters from various cultural and geographical backgrounds converge in Fanqui-Town, a tumultuous world unto it­self where civilizations clash and sometimes fuse. It is a powder keg awaiting a spark to ignite the Opium Wars. Spectacular coincidences, startling re­versals of fortune, and tender love stories abound. But this is much more than an irresistible page-turner. The blind quest for money, the primacy of the drug trade, the concealment of base impulses behind the rhetoric of freedom: in River of Smoke is a consuming historical novel with powerful contemporary reso­nance. Writer Amitav Ghosh continues the epic that has charmed and enthralled readers all over the globe.
