Vitus Tribe & The Pantherkid - The Baile Flute

Nordic Woman is a compilation album created by Norwegian-Pakistani/Afghan music producer and activist Deeyah featuring female artists from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland who draw their inspiration from the various and distinctive styles of traditional Nordic music.

Nordic Woman is the first music collection in an ongoing WOMAN series dedicated to celebrating women’s voices and musical heritage from around the world.

Each album, Deeyah explains, is a journey through traditional music forms as expressed through women’s voices and women’s artistry, and is an exploration of women’s experiences and circumstances, drawing attention to women’s position in the world today, their accomplishments, struggles and the barriers they still face.

‘It was natural for me to start the series with a tribute to women’s creativity in the place I was born. Growing up in a Nordic country, and seeing what was possible for women to achieve, has not only formed an essential part of my artistic perspective, but has informed my own personal commitment to women’s rights,’ said Deeyah, ‘so the first release in this series had to be Nordic Woman.’

The artists featured on the Nordic Woman album are Lena Willemark, Mari Boine, Annbjørg Lien, Bára Grímsdóttir, Tuva Livsdatter Syvertsen, Suden Aika, Valravn, Unni Løvlid, Kirsten Bråten Berg, Adjágas, Ragga Gröndal & The Icelandic Folk Ensemble, Phønix, MeNaiset, Garmarna, Heiða Árnadóttir, SUO, Ranarim and Tone Hulbækmo.

Produced in collaboration with Grappa Musikkforlag, the foremost independent music company in Norway, Nordic Woman is the debut production from Deeyah’s own Fuuse Mousiqi, a music company with a social conscience, borne out of the union of her two deepest passions – music and activism.

As well as being an acclaimed music producer, Deeyah is a prize-winning activist, well-known for her outspoken support for non-violence, women’s rights and freedom of expression. A classically trained singer from the age of seven, Deeyah has since broadened her creative expression into film-making and digital media initiatives, all underwritten by a passionate commitment to human rights and social activism.

‘Women’s voices, and women’s experiences, remain crucial to the continued progression towards full equality in all societies. The WOMAN series is my way of honouring and celebrating women and a personal voyage through the indigenous and traditional music of their lands’ explains Deeyah.

Doing good with good music has always been Gravitas’s way of life. With this in mind, Gravitas Recordings is pleased to release Circulate Vol. 1, a global bass compilation curated by David Starfire and SOOHAN. This compilation boasts an impressive roster full of original tracks, remixes, and collaborations with eclectic artists such as Kaya Project, An-ten-nae, Desert Dwellers, Beats Antique, and CloZee, to name a few. Circulate was created in support of Beyond the Grade, a grassroots 501(c)3 not-for-profit Austin-based charity that provides after school music education for underserved children.

Over the years, Austin musicians have donated their time to Beyond the Grade in teaching various programs, camps, and classes such as beats, live performance, drum kits, keyboard/piano, and guitars. Music is proven to positively increase people’s happiness, learning, and creativity; however, many schools are not able to fund music education. David Starfire and SOOHAN understand first-hand how beneficial it can be towards cognitive development and self-esteem in children, and they are excited to spread Beyond the Grade’s mission among the electronic music community through Circulate.

Another mission of Circulate was to advocate the global bass music community that is growing around the world. This compilation spotlights different sounds and features artists from around the United States, Finland, Ghana, Canada, Hungary, Angola, Poland, France, the UK, and more who contribute to create cutting-edge music that is a fusion of traditional cultural music mixed with modern beats, bass, and rhythms. There is a movement in music with different cultures coming together musically with dance music, as dance crosses all languages and is a language of its own to be understood universally. From celebrations to rituals, dance brings people together. With the internet, anyone can listen to music from another culture and fuse it with dance music to create a unique version to share with others. This global bass compilation was created with the understanding that people are interested in being educated about music from around the world and hearing sounds that are outside of the norm. Beyond the Grade was the perfect charity to partner with for this compilation, and 100% of net proceeds will be donated to assist in “keeping music alive in Austin schools.
