Steinway artist, Chad Lawson, decided Chopin needed a new introduction.  Along with violinist Judy Kang (Lady Gaga, Ryuichi Sakamoto) and cellist Rubin Kodheli (Kanye West, Norah Jones), Lawson has arranged ten Chopin works into a minimalist landscape.

It's a risk editing the "poet of the piano" but one that Chopin would be proud of.  

Taking 10 Chopin works, Lawson decided to scale the works down to a minimalist setting.  "I knew even if bare-bones, Chopin's works could still be as spellbinding as the original compositions we are so familiar with." says the pianist.

I begun to write this track for last year's Pianoday amongst other album tracks. I was inspired by prepared piano composers and used recordings of the strings of the piano being strummed with the keys taped down to allow them to resonate. I didn't complete it till later on in the year and felt it belonged on the album alongside other tracks that we're being written sequentially at the same time ( https://orcd.co/alone-not-alone-album ) so I'm thrilled to now see it come home and contribute to Piano Day 2020!

In the track delicate beginnings give way to an overwhelming sense of wistfulness, surrounded by the sirens of compassion.  A reflection on the challenges of departure and the need for independence and, in the end, solitude and the possibilities therein. The piano strings we're close mic'd and gently strummed for the intro and background soundscape. Later on they we're hit with the handle of a glockenspiel beater to make the stronger sound for the middle section. The piano melody is joined by bow'd xylophone and string glissando's and melodies to create an atmospheric track that speaks of the tensions of solitude and togetherness, inspired by a visit to Crozon in France and our country's own challenges of leaving the EU and the tensions therein.

The Near Isle

Compared with the likes of Max Richter, Dustin O'halloran, Nils Frahm and other like minded composers, Hutching's has prompted much critical praise worldwide, with MOJO Magazine declaring her work as ‘stirring, vigorous, [and] grandly melodic”. Hutchings debut album was listed in that magazine’s Top 5 Independent releases and has continued to endure and impress since. Hutchings is subtly playful within the direct and emotive candour of her style, making for an open and surprising journey throughout. Balancing the beautiful fragility in her work with a deeper sense of urgency creates a striking charge to her performance with a compelling pulse that also encompasses a lightness of touch in parts making for many shades set within Hutchings’ beguiling vision.
Her compositions move from disarmingly spare and elegant beginnings to curl out with a tingling edge, propelling its austerity into urgent and epic realms. Violin, cello, heighten the flight these pieces can take as well as dip and swell within the more dimly lit moods of gentler nuance, casting a particular spell across the range of feeling captured in Sophie’s playing. Both unfussed and exquisite though constantly evolving....
