‘Afterthought’ is an alt indie-pop banger that revisits and reflects on the red flags of a past relationship.

“I wrote Afterthought about dating someone who never thinks about you in their decisions, showing a clear disregard and disrespect to the person they are dating’s but wouldn’t dare treat their mates that way. They are the ones who can’t help dropping you a What’s app to ‘check in’, expecting you to ‘be mother’ as they drift in and out of your life refuelling their confidence. It has nothing to do with bitterness it is about self-reflection and growth. Time really is a healer and only on reflection do you realise that some people will never change or take responsibility for their actions. I really want people to feel empowered to say, ‘fuck that, if you don’t treat me right, you don’t get to be in my life”. I know that is easy said than done, especially when the heart is involved but I am trying to adopt that as one of my dating mantras for sure. “

Failure

I’m inspired by a lot of lofi/slacker type music along with Talking Heads and hip-hop and I guess that comes out here. The song is built around a lofi groove with a hint of G-funk in its DNA, along with perhaps the laziest guitar solo in rock and roll history. 

This track is a fruition of the last few moon’s labour of love. One means of expression I’ve sporadically been pruning and pondering and pruning and pouring a lot of love and frustration into. So, please, soak up the grooves and I hope you enjoy.

Freaky

'Body on the Inside' pairs Sophie’s love for classic rock with modern pop sounds. With a sonic fusion of Boygenius’s emotional depth and the confrontational grit of Patti Smith, this thought-provoking songwriter has the gusto of a true rock singer. That added with the anthemic guitars and a highly addictive chorus all reinforce her ability to ask uncomfortable questions in the quest for empowerment.

Sophie explains: ‘Body on the Inside’ is me taking back control of my body. I refuse to let society tell me how others see and touch it. I hope the song empowers people to say no to things they don’t want to do and encourages them to take back their bodies”.

Nothing Left

'The Ground' is a reflective song about moving on from a past relationship, whilst wishing that person all the best. The song came from a drum groove, which was later adapted for more of modern jazz feel. Next came the main guitar chords, with the melody/lyrics added shortly after. The spoken word/rap sections bring an exciting and energetic feel to the song, whilst giving more context to the song. The middle section opens out to intertwining violins and lush guitars, sailing the song to a reminiscent ending. FFO Gogo Penguin, Fink, The Cinematic Orchestra, Alfa Mist.
