Jan Blomqvist is a Berlin-based live electronic artist, whose signature melancholic vocals, introspective melodies and lush beats are celebrated throughout the international dance music scene. With his band he performs dance-oriented electronic pop; as a solo artist, vocal techno.

As a child Jan was always singing. His open-minded parents immediately saw and encouraged his natural talent by exposing him to a variety of music and by giving him his first guitar. Fortunately or unfortunately he was not allowed to join the school band, so instead he formed his own band in a caravan in the woods. There they were free to play whatever music they wanted, which at that time was mostly melodic grunge and punk rock. While the band had moderate success it seemed unrealistic that it would become a career option at that point so after high school Jan, who was always keenly interested in the sciences, began studying aerospace engineering. Then, at the age of 21, he saw his first techno DJ and realized an alternative path in which music could in fact be a profession for him.

Jan continued making music, sharing his nights between producing and working at Berlin’s Week-End club where he earned enough behind the bar for even the odd educational trip to a Radiohead concert or sunday picnic at Bar 25. Through these inspiring experiences he began to form a new goal for himself as a musician, to bring a concert atmosphere to the dancefloor through strong vocals, detailed minimal beats and minor key melodies that are actually somehow uplifting. And more generally, to break up the monotony in the techno nightlife by injecting some pop and rock sensibilities back into the club scene.

In 2011 he got his first big break, a prime time slot at the fusion festival in front of 3000 people right before a big rainstorm. Then after 2 popular releases on Dantze and Stil vor Talent Records he got his next lucky punch, a beautiful video of a flawless live concert performance on the rooftop of Week-End club, which immediately went viral on YouTube and now has almost 2 million hits. This seamlessly flowed into what is now over 250 gigs in three years in places like Moscow, Paris, Istanbul, New York, Rome, Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam, Milan, Athens, Budapest, Beirut, Tunis, Naples, Bucharest, Warsaw, Zurich, Marseilles, Montpellier, Thessaloniki, Munich, Vienna, London, and Dubai.

But in the background of all this and his numerous other collaborative releases Jan has been steadily working on his debut album, taking all the time he needs to get everything perfect. And its getting close now. Sonically it stays true to the big club sound and dark melodies that he is known for.

“It’s that imperfect sound that makes us,” Jan explains. “Emotional, honest, authentic, detailed, big-bassed, sometimes atonal, but mostly just indifferent to the rules. Because, more often than not, it is that wry-ish note that give you goosebumps.”

3 QUESTIONS to JONAS SAALBACH:

Q: Talking about your mix. What do these tracks mean to you? How did they shape your career? 

A: To mix „How I Met The Bass“ was a super cool session and truly a flashback to 10 years ago, when I started to listen to electronic music. After I spent so much time with funky beats and the whole Hip Hop culture. For sure the tracks mean a lot to me as they were inspiring and laid to the foundation for my music career. 

Q: I´ve heard there is a new album coming up. Tell us more! 

A: Yes! I worked hard on my second long player ‚Perspective' the last couple of months and I´m happy about the result. It´s a ten tracker and will be release on my homebase label Einmusika Recordings 27th of March on CD and digital format. I would say it´s a well balanced mixture between electronica, melodic club tracks and hypnotic deep house grooves. 

Q: According to your b2b-Live-Act with Einmusik – are there any common releases planned? 

A: We did not plan studio sessions yet, as Samuel (Einmusik) is also working on a new album. But we will extend the back to back live session and combine our two new long players. I love this project and we will have a couple of cool gigs coming up in 2017 in places like Dubai, Cairo and Beirut.

But this year, playing after the sunrise on Friday, seeing so many friends and campmates out for a morning dance reminded that the point of all this is a simple one: coming together and sharing moments of joy. As we get closer to our sister label PUZL Records 1 Year Anniversary celebration we couldn’t resist tapping one of their esteemed guests, Daniel Steinberg, to be apart of our mix series this week. A few years back our own MR PUZL came across the Steinberg’s Arms & Legs outfit and since then has championed their sound in his mixes, reviews and sets. Their unique blend of funk, jazz, hip-hop, soul and house coupled with their passion and longstanding presence in the scene has made them staple in DJ sets and radio shows worldwide. Steinberg’s recent collaboration with Oliver Dollar is yet another reflection of the producer’s esteemed career and ability to stay in sync with the constantly evolving landscape of our industry. 

While Daniel Steinberg may not be a household name here in the states (and in the deeply saturated market of Los Angeles even the world’s best and brightest can seemingly go unnoticed) he is certainly an artist we recommend you become familiar with. As always, we at LAMP stay firm to our commitment to not only shine light on local talent but those from cities and countries far and wide that inspire and influence our musical tastes. Based in Berlin but originally from Italy, Soul Button has undoubtedly made a distinctive mark on the Melodic Techno scene, starting his personal project in 2012 along with the launch of his label and brand, Steyoyoke Recordings. As the inventor and trademark owner of the Ethereal Techno subgenre, his artist name, Soul Button, reflects a strong conceptual identity.

Soul Button transformed his label into a real brand, first establishing the two sub-labels Steyoyoke Black and Inner Symphony, and later developing his own clothing brand, SYYK Berlin, as well as his own publishing company, SYYK Publishing. Well known in the electronic music scene as one of the most skilled DJs and producers, for his mental and soulful sets and tracks, Soul Button has affirmed his international exposure.

His career took off with many successful singles like "Swift Minds" and "Wraith", the latter featuring acclaimed American vocalist Terry Grant. Tracks like "Reverie" and "Metamorphosis" were a great anticipation of his first album, released in December 2019, "Phantom Existence", a 13-original track album that marked a significant moment in his career, followed by a remix edition in April 2020.

Recent years have seen continued success with the release of the "Pantheon" EP alongside Monarke, and singles such as "God Save The Rave", "Crescendo", "Merine", "Infinitude", and "Dalliance", capturing the attention of techno enthusiasts worldwide. His latest work includes "Walking Straight Up", a single that highlights his ascent in 2023, together with the collection, "Dual Realms of Sound", which was a testament to Soul Button's evolving sound and his ability to capture the duality of rhythm and melody, further solidifying his place in the techno realm. 2024 sees his second official album "Master Minds", which will be launched in April 2024, with preceding singles "Lumina" and "Tartribe".

Having cemented himself firmly in the scene, Soul Button maintains focus on the continuous growth and development of his labels as well as his own personal career. The upcoming years will surely be busy with new tours and projects on the horizon.
