Nathan Germain aka Sprælle ([Sprah-lé], he/him) is a 24-yo French musician, producer, and DJ based between Montreal, Canada, and NY City, US. His work collects stimuli from multiple musical and cultural references such as contemporary laptop electronics, ambient and experimental music, as well as mainstream pop and videogame soundtracks. These, in particular, had a role in inspiring his debut EP called CRUSH UP, appeared early last year on the Spanish label xenonyms, which enacted a lively confrontation between lo-fi components and sharp sonic bursts on the foreground of energetic and eventful progressions.

Other than releasing several single tracks from 2019 onward, Sprælle already appeared twice on the Montreal-based platform Audio Bambino, with the tracks Aïsha and Gravel on this 2nd and 7th compilations respectively. Also, the artist hosts monthly residencies on Montreal’s N10.AS and Tunis’ Ma3azef radios, called Bleed In The Underground and Rearranged Existence. On this occasion, we're happy to present you with a one-track single written and produced by Sprælle, a 20-minutes mammoth composition called Ropes To Eternity Lead Nowhere which has been reportedly designed to take the listener through multifaceted sceneries of abstract realities.

Engaging on the challenge of blurring the boundaries between genres via different compositional solutions and production techniques such as time-stretching, field recording manipulation, and digital saturation, just to name a few, Ropes To Eternity Lead Nowhere is a challenging, free-form yet well-conducted journey into Sprælle’s take on electronic music, delicate and impassioned at the same time. In the track, a mutable collage of sound and rhythmical components is patched together around a central theme of wonder and discovery, which is declined in distensive moments of relaxation, tense passages of agitation, and abrasive, emotional junctures. All the drives behind Sprælle’s creation process converge into an organic tale of an ever-changing life creature arising from a pond of scattered materials and manifesting itself in its diverse, unseizable shapes, until the final abrupt conclusion. "Highly regarded around these ways for introducing the likes of Ronce on his Dawn Records label - with whom he collaborated on the ‘Aquatics’ LP - and a string of ace compilation cuts, visual artist-turned-producer Hajj renders his most ephemeral yet affective conception of a negative ecstasy in ‘Drag Me Into the Void’. The three tracks reprise the billowing introspection of his 2020 debut for Brothers From Different Mothers , ‘Dédicace À Personne’ with a subtly refined palette and sound design, dematerialising traces elements of late ‘90s trance and up-to-the-second trap into thee gauziest, gently buoyant ambient space.

The trio of tax slot neatly into YOUTH's cross section of contemporary bedroom/living room/imaginary club space with a breezy mutability. ‘Drag Me Into the Void’ appears in subtly alternate mixes, bathing a trance siren vocal refrain in anaesthetising reverb and vapourized traces of emo-rap drums with a sublime sense of deferred gratification on the original, while nipping/tucking to more elusive allure in the ‘Euphoria’s death edit’. In the middle ‘Reverse Catharsis’ augments the syrupy ambient rap aesthetic with more pronounced woodblock percussion hinting at Burial hitting the downstroke, and lit up with killer, trancey hyper-blooz synth plucks. In a global landscape that increasingly prioritizes individuality over collaborative expression, TRANCE is a distinctive project. Initiated by Chinese multidisciplinary artist Tianzhuo Chen, best known for his work with Asian Dope Boys, TRANCE is as artistically amorphous as its constantly evolving line-up, that fluctuates as it shimmers across borders and time-zones. In 2019, the project was demoed in Beijing as part of a solo exhibition from Chen, a 12-hour durational performance that examined the altered states of living and dying and pondered the sounds, sensations, bodies and spaces that notion might suggest. On hold for three years due to COVID-19 restrictions, TRANCE was eventually premiered in Hamburg at the Kampnagel Theatre last year where it was presented as a surreal three-day ceremony. This time around the Trance Band was made up of Berlin-based noisemaker and vocalist Dis Fig, Indonesia's Gabber Modus Operandi, musician and MC KIM KHAN, guitarist and engineer Felix-Florian Tödtloff, and Vancouver-based percussionist and producer CITY. Chen directed the show, channeling each artist's unique energy into an alliance that highlighted their independent skills while pushing towards ideas that simply couldn't have been realized discretely.

"Entrancing" is a live documentation of that incendiary Hamburg session, powered by the performative fireworks that came from having the project halted for two years before it was allowed to burst into life once more. Just as with previous iterations of TRANCE, the space was terraformed into an alien landscape that allowed the collective to enact a carnivalesque display that was tightly controlled but creatively boundless. Musical u-turns were accompanied by monumental stage overhauls that reshaped a muddy, fog-filled outdoor riverscape into an arena, or a sweaty nightclub. This theatrical impact can't be visualized as clearly on the record, but musical cues do just enough heavy lifting to provide a tantalizing contour. When the alluring electro-acoustic plucks and resonant sustained string tones of 'There's a Ghost in the Lantern' cascade into cinematic drone metal on 'Ylva's Theme', it's impossible not to be drawn into the TRANCE narrative. Sonic stage lights flicker with uncommon intensity as the nebulous group rewrite their collective personal stories into stirring, synergistic poetry.

"Something changes!" KIM KHAN calls out on 'Soft and Black', cutting through warbling synths and itchy beatbox percussion. The track builds quickly, reaching a sizzling crescendo of buzzsaw noise and acidic electronics. It's a stylistic sea change that channels the group's kinetic energy into a rock show, and CITY picks up the message on 'Trance Genesis', adding rapid-fire drums to a barrage of guitar skronk. 'Shaolin Affliction' glues Trance Band's jagged artistic edges to a vintage metal template, gradually dissolving into throaty post-hardcore, while 'My Fortress' brings the show to a powerful conclusion with Dis Fig assuming the role of grunge balladeer, bellowing into the void over cacophonous live instrumentation. Unbound by musical and artistic conventions, TRANCE peers out from the basement, the gallery and the playhouse to forge an expression that's all of this and something new entirely. It's refreshing, witty, exhilarating and most of all, completely unpredictable.
