Jackies Music House Session #164 - "Naux"

Naux:  
Bringing sunshine to the French scene for a few years now, Naux started music at an early age as a drummer in jazz groups. He's now an independent electronic music producer & DJ which signs many productions and EPs on various French and foreign labels (Russia, Spain, Italy, UK ...).
These connections allows him to collaborate with pretty names of the French scene, but also to appear in the playlists of major international DJs. Mainly House with a pronounced taste for energetic bangers & sampled music, this artist however has several strings to his bow, with recently his duo "Frr Fonk", focused on Live House : this groovy troublemaker has not finished surprising.

FRR Fonk:
Since the beginning of mankind, every century, the mighty gods of Fonk choose two adventurers among all humans...
To start a journey and try to find the Holy Synth, lost for thousand years.
To restore the balance in the Fonk and keep It alive.
In recent years, the Lyon based duo FRR FONK formed by Naux and Dew Arte, has been playing and crafting a sunny yet melancholic, sensitive house music. Rocked in music from a very young age, these two bros translate their passion through their drum machines and synthesizers to take you on a journey for a single purpose : dance and communion.

Bombyce July 2017 Mix

Formerly known as Sleepwalker, Small Town Guy - aka Shantanu Ghosh hails from the coastal town of Pondicherry. Known for his dancefloor selections which are not confined by genre, his sets are a hybrid between nu disco and techno with slight world-music influences.

Having performed at GO:MADras, Shanti Jatra and Future Theory - and as an active promoter in Pondicherry - Small Town Guy is slowly gaining traction as one of India’s leading curators who is constantly experimenting and re-inventing dance floor music. 

His latest mix for Wild City merges disco with hints of techno and funk and through the course of an hour features tracks from the likes of Psychemagik, Afrolicious and Stavroz - representing various areas of the dance music spectrum, that interest him. @the-revenge, Scottish-born, Copenhagen-based purveyor of fine grooves and one half of @6thboroughproject serves up an hour of his most supremely chuggy slo-mo disco flavours for us. Languid grooves for sticky nights.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Eclectic I guess. I'm a lover of music in general so I gravitate towards anything with emotion that moves me. That's the framework really - and my production and sound flexes around that regardless genre.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Many things are the seeds of inspiration for me, not just music. It can be films, experiences, feelings ... they are as important as musical influences which stretch across the genres. I love great sounding records from bands like Steely Dan or Earth, Wind & Fire ... but equally love dirty sounding records from people like Moodymann or Gangstarr.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I planned to do something across the bpm spectrum but didn't quite realise how much stuff I had done! So I stuck to a slow, chuggy groove featuring some older tracks I'd been involved in over the years. I've always loved that sort of tempo for starting a night off, and although I play a lot of house sets these days I always relish playing this sort of groove if I get to kick the party off.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I've never really been comfortable with Artist or DJ titles or whatever. Perhaps "music obsessed" suits me better. Probably a more fitting description.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NYC music scene?
A. I landed in New York in 2007. I thought that was it. After Detroit, next chapter. In retrospect, I was just on a DJ hiatus. I guess I've been a part of Brooklyn's DJ scene for a little over a decade.

Q. Tell us about this mix.
A. I've been toying with the idea of doing a different kind of mix for a while. Juanita's was the perfect opportunity to showcase a different side. So, thank you. Most people who know me think Acid. House. Techno. Electro. Bangers Only! This mix is not that. I've always been heavily influenced by my 90's upbringing. A musically rich and significant era. The elements of atmosphere, mood, and spirit come into play for this mix. It's a bit nostalgic and sentimental. A one take, vinyl only situation recorded at home just yesterday. A stream of consciousness summer head nod for a rainy day, or a sunny one. Meant to uplift and inspire. It is necessary to keep our optimism and focus up with the music that moves us, and to share that. It is an extension of love and hope in our extreme times. Press play. Turn up. Enjoy.

I was bringing out two Pioneer 707s, doing the Hummingbird, Jacks, The Courtyard, etc. I’d bring a drum machine, too. I would make tracks right then as the party was going. Way before my guys Daft Punk and all of them were doing live gigs, I was doing that at the basement parties – just bringing drum machines and doing everything live. A lot of my early tracks came from me doing them at the party when the party was going on. I’d save it in memory and bring it home and polish it up. But I listen to it now and it’s like, damn… didn’t use enough cleaner!” - Mike Dunn

A few months back we were sent an album via Huntleys & Palmers, a record label with which we have worked closely over the years. It was by an artist called System Olympia who upon digging we discovered had previously released music via Slow Motion Records and was a regular on NTS.

However, nothing prepared us for the supreme quality of the record and to be honest it caught us completely off guard. Titled "Delta Of Venus" the album features ten tracks which move slowly and provocatively, some built for the dance floor and others simply for a dark room and late night funk. Elements of Lo-Fi and nods to the P-Funk era creep throughout in what is an alluring, sexy affair. 

The record has already received widespread support and airplay, it's of little surprise given how well rounded and addictive it is. System Olympia is an artist who has very much made a statement and we are humbled and delighted to be able to feature her as part of our mix series.

Enrique Jimenez aka Big Pack is the https://soundcloud.com/housesaladmusic label boss out of Mexico City. He discovered his love for electronic music in the mid 90's when he attended house and techno parties with local DJs. From then on, his intimate love affair with house music began. The sound of Chicago with labels like Cajual and Relief and Prescription brought him the most inspiration. His whole trajectory changed and music became his life. 

The task of discovering music became an infinite loop of collecting records. After 11 years of touring dance floors as a spectator and amateur DJ, in 2005 he acquired his first turntables, technics 1200s. When he finally felt he had an extensive vinyl collection, he decided to venture into the world of DJing professionally.

Now, with some years of experience, Big Pack has played in key clubs all over Mexico, opening for artists such as Kevin Saunderson, Kenny Larkin, Derrick Carter, Phil Weeks, Wally Callerio, Andrew Emil, JT Donaldson , Oliver Dollar, 1200 Warriors, to name a few.

He is busy with several internet radio show residencies on Sugarshackradio.com, Radio Webphre and his own podcast & label, House Salad Music, featuring the best DJs in house music. He is in his 700th episode of HSM podcast and has yet to put one of his own mixes on this platform.

Convinced of the timelessness of music, his mixes are a real tunnel of time, where he plays classics combined with the freshest of modern house.
