Although all three tracks offer the listener valuable insight into the level of music production ingenuity that was going on in Japan at the time, it's "Electric City" that really stands out as an unmistakably unique dancefloor track, where the then teenage female vocalists from Shohjo-Tai are left out and a galloping 120BPM beat sets a blank canvas for a number of unexpected elements to present: completely unorthodox accents in a wide range of unidentifiable sounds, a very enthusiastic electric guitar solo, the Ennio Morricone-esque Spaghetti Western vocal moments, all of which get contrasted with a blissful chorus that reminds one that this is somehow still a collaboration with a Japanese female idol band from the 80s. A hard track to forget even in the less sober dancefloors, it is no surprise that it would be a fundamental secret weapon in the repertoire of diggers such as Dea Barandana. Can't go wrong, buy on sight. Remastered with new artwork.

About one year after our Vol. 2, clubs and dancing bars were closed again in France. This sad news made us decide to launch again our Edits series, slightly renaming it “Paradise edits”. Fortunately, the good contacts we made through the last year helped us pulling together this new compilation quite fast. First, we had the Brooklyn duo Fundido, part of Earth Beat crew, with whom we had been chatting for quite a while and talked many times about having an edit from then. Then, we asked Sputnik, a DJ from Moscow to join, as we were enchanted by his work for That’s A Steal and his release on Gop Tun records earlier this year. A few days later, Nicolas Kotowicz, another Russian artist, contacted us to share his edit and we thought he would be a perfect addition to the comp. Finally, Latane introduced us to Lloyd with a bunch of edits and we were very keen to include him too.
Here’s the result of their works and a few questions we asked them about their stories and their approach to edits.

Jussi sees the essence of disco as a soiled mattress you have passed out on in a cellar in Marrakech, a mattress infested with fungal growths born of insects and bodily fluids. As you lay there half unconscious, microscopic tentacles emerge from textures below and pore into the folds of your flesh, squirming up into your brain. Irreversibly perverted you will then rise, hungry for unsafe and strange music.
 
Jussi is part of the Overfitting Disco dj collective, explorers in the further regions of the disco experience. He has played the sound f. ex. in Tokyo (Knock Koenji), Detroit (UFO Factory, Paris (Le Nouveau Casino, Le Java), Berlin (Arkaoda), Barcelona (the Glove parties) and at the infamous Camp Cosmic events. @jussikantonen

Our first contemporary release on Avec Plaisir features a stunning collaboration of Munich-based Ly Nguyen and @supersoundglobal's @nicjalusi. We discovered "Laguna Azur" already years ago through our friend Pia and kept playing it in our sets since then, which caused almost ridiculous amounts of ID-requests from audiences all over Europe. So when Ly and Nic agreed on working together on a physical release, we knew this is gonna be something special. 

While the Original Laguna Azur Mix takes you on a motorcycle trip to  a beach bar sipping cocktails in the early 90s (with denim jackets, cocktail umbrellas and the full program), Jalusi's Acid Dub is already starting the party, when the dubby bass hits like we wanna dance into the sunset, watching smiles on everyones faces, rumpled hair from the early evening breeze. 2AM – was it Hazme Sonar or Sueno Latino or the Balearic Eric & Nic Jalusi Dream House Mix – You’re in a sea of hands up in the air when those piano chords kick in after the break. You just want to dive into the ocean for another night swim and shake your drenched body on the sandy dancefloor. A handful of friends remain at the beach in the very moment when the sun comes up and you’ll hear the hypnotizing leftfield dub "My Heart“, lying on the shore, everyone’s eyes turn into the greenish-blue color of a mystical lagoon hidden in the palm forest. A salty taste remaining on your skin.

The radio season has finally begun again at Groningen's finest radio station, Relate Radio, after a two month summer break. Just like last season I'll host my own show called Jam City @ Relate Radio in which I showcase an hour of South African dance music from the 90's with a focus on a specific theme or subject. 

For this month's episode and the season two opener the theme was Kariba Records. Kariba was part of Tusk Music and handled the local music division. It was formed in 1993 and almost straight from the get go they released Kwaito and South African House records up until 1997 when it got sold to the Gallo Record Company.

Personally Kariba Records is one of the most stand out labels when it comes to Kwaito music. This partly comes due to the diversity in releases, it gives a really good insight into all the different subgenres there were back in the early years of development of the genre. I've tried to showcase this diversity in this show.

Most of the DJ world doesn't know who Guillaume Teyssier is. You're missing out. But that's ok, we're gonna help you here with 2 magnificient remixes of Teyssier's music. One is by Tigersushi's long time collaborators Principles Of Geometry. They go deep, like very deep, diving underwater with this shimmering remix of a very well known French pop hit from the 80s that Guillaume covered on his album. The other one is from a newcomer from Australia. Murray Lake runs a beautiful studio there and you can hear that in the lush production of this long epic Space take on Vortex Disco. A perfect set opener.

GUILLAUME TEYSSIER - Vortex Disco (MURRAY LAKE REMIX)

From the man who runs Hell Yeah Recordings and the edit man from the Balearic Gabba Soundsystem comes this vinyl only edit series, now unleashing its second release.

The first sold out in quick time, with great feedback from a wide range of DJs (from Locodice to Prins Thomas), and the second is likely to do the same: taking two classic tracks, Italian producer Enzo Elia channels his love of all thing Balearic and re-edits for the modern day.

Enzo has been a music loving vinyl obsessive since his teens, with productions on esteemed labels like Hell Yeah, Engrave, Lion1Music, and support for them coming in from the likes of Osunlade, DJ Hell, Carl Cox and Kenny Larkin. On his Balearic Gabba Edits Vol 2 release, though, he showcases a wider production skill than ever before…

The first edit is Problem by NOW NOW NOW, originally released back in 1991 and an affirmed classic for proper balearic headz.

Retaining the original’s synth smears, Enzo adds the patter of gentle congas, some micro-bacterial synth sounds and perfectly encapsulates whatever it is to be Balearic in the modern day.

The second is one of Ramirez’s lesser-known productions, Tambores from the 1993 album Terapia that also birthed better-known classics like Hablando. Here Enzo slows down and strips out the original into something with more humid percussion lines, tribal drums and filtered voices. It’s deep and organic house for the late night hours.

It would be fair to say that Leng co-founder Paul “Mudd” Murphy is a born collaborator. Since first donning the Mudd alias at the dawn of the century, Murphy has released numerous collaborative albums and singles with regular collaborators Ben Smith (as Smith & Mudd) and Kevin Pollard (Mudd & Pollard), as well as playing a key role in “super-groups” Paqua and Bison.

“Susta”, which marks his first single on Leng since 2009, sees Murphy add some new names to his growing list of collaborators. It was made in cahoots with singer/songwriter David Harks, a regular Satin Jackets collaborator who also appeared on Jack Cutter’s superb “Serpent Strut” cut on Murphy’s Claremont 56 label.

“Susta” is a bubbly, evocative and ear-pleasing chunk of mid-tempo nu-disco pop featuring lead vocals from Jaanika Leino AKA JaneLy – a former X-Factor Finland contestant whose sultry and evocative voice simply soars above Murphy and Harks’ sparkling, life-affirming instrumentation. Rich in twinkling synth solos, rich Clavinet lines, chugging arpeggio lines and eyes-closed piano, “Susta” is a strong song that will squat inside your head and stay there for days. Our advice is to welcome it in – it’s as joyous and life-affirming a track as Leng has ever released.

It’s accompanied by a predictably strong remix by British electronic music veteran Andrew Meecham (Bizarre Inc, Chicken Lips etc.), who dons the now familiar Emperor Machine alias to deliver a dub for the ages. Combining his own analogue and modular electronics with snippets of Leino’s vocal and some of the warmest instrumentation from Murphy and Harks’ original mix (think Clavinet and Rhodes for starters), Meecham offers up an epic slice of electronic dub disco that bubbles away for ten mesmerizing minutes. It’s a superb interpretation of a high quality cut. The digital download edition features a full Vocal remix and Instrumental take on Meecham’s Dub mix that’s every bit as off-kilter and alluring.
