The Sound of Polarity

I was invited to perform at GGBY (aka Gobble Gobble Bitches Yeah) this year as part of their Sunset Sessions, in which artists played music at sunset on the rim of the Fruit Bowl. (The Fruit Bowl is a nationally-designated highline area - the jewel of its kind - along a section of the canyon rim in the Island of the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park outside Moab, UT.) 

My set was scheduled for sunset on Thanksgiving day, so I thought it would be appropriate to incorporate some audio befitting of the occasion. I asked Chief Šúnkawakhán Sápa (or Black Horse; aka Phillip Scott) if I could record some sample audio of him speaking on the origins and realities of the consensus Thanksgiving narrative. The other piece of tape audio most prominently audible in the recording is an excerpt from a cassette recording of Coyote & Native American Folk Tales retold by Joe Hayes (1983). I included this audio because of a profound, near-deadly experience I had on the drive to Moab to perform this set; the prior Monday I was driving from Oakland, CA to Salt Lake City, UT at 80 mph on I-80 outside of Elko, NV when I encountered a coyote in the right lane. Instinctively I swerved to avoid it, at which point my car spun out & off the road, eventually flipping over. I ended up upside down, but shockingly, I was completely unharmed. I managed to rent a car the next morning (Elko is the only town for 150 miles in any direction with an airport, and therefore, a car rental outfit), retrieve my music gear from my wrecked Jetta, and continue on my way with barely any inconvenience. 

I have come to believe that this coyote encounter was a potent spiritual visitation and intend to integrate the blessings and insights from this experience into my life and my music hereafter.
