This is a long recording from a ridge near the ocean, so the surf is in the background, there is bird and animal activity at dusk and dawn, and a big thunderstorm rolls in.  The Yellow-Throated Toucan is very active, and the Scarlet Macaws, Tinamou, and Mantled Howler Monkeys are also calling at dusk. I removed one section of a few minutes where the rainfall was so heavy it started leaking through and hitting the mics but otherwise left this recording intact.  I used my Sennheiser Double MidSide system with a Sound Devices MixPre recorder.

Western Meadowlark, Sturnella neglecta

An abundant and widely distributed grassland bird of North America, it's a common voice in the wide open spaces in the Pacific Northwest's drier inland regions and sagebrush seas.

Unlike the more well-recognized song of the Western Meadowlark (see https://soundcloud.com/soundeziner/birdsong-troupials-and-allies-western-meadowlark), the roll of this call is to reinforce the bonding between a mated pair. Serving as both a contact and an alert, this is the male's counterpart to the female's quiet rattle. This particular male, recorded in the evening light of Summer Solstice 2024 in the beautiful Sinlahekin Valley, used this call to lure a female around the meadow. He would continually call and whistle until she would fly close. Then he hopped down to the ground an called for her to follow. This repeated over and over, with him slowly luring her around the meadow. I don't know if it's a breeding pattern or if they were just playing, but it WAS fascinating.

I'm not cleaning this recording as might usually do because I just love, LOVE the distant echo off the riparian border from his loud whistle. It's a joy to my ears.

Western Meadowlark

A herd of red cows approaching us from front and passing by on a warm September noon of 2019 at the hills of Southern Urals. Lots of energetic mooing, shepherd shouts and whistles, some birds chirping and moderate wind. I love this recording for its brutal and raw energy.
Recorded with Nevaton VR FOA mic into Zaxcom Fusion 12, decoded to binaural with Harpex-X plugin. Please listen on headphones for correct spatial reproduction.

For a long time I wanted to record a really surrounding, enveloping and moving wind through reed. I found the perfect conditions at the forest lakes in Karelia. This track sounds like some witches are chattering around, whispering their spells.
