'Midnight Letters' [Andrew Tasselmyer & Blurstem] [PITP-C027]

I've got a very lovely piano piece for you this morning from the ever-lovely Moderna imprint, which continues to scour the hidden corners of the scene to bring you some of the most heartfelt music. This one comes from the emerging [and pretty young] Augsburg-based (Germany) composer Linus Alberg, offering us his label debut, titled Elements. On this collection of eight tracks, Alberg shares his sentimentality, initially inspired by the changing of the seasons but somehow evoking something else entirely, at least in me, as if uncovering a buried key to a forgotten memory. His incredible compositional musicality is only surpassed by the execution, whereby remarkably gentle melodies effortlessly flutter in the curated space, held together by the solid bass, frequency-rich harmonium, and occasional echoes of the breathy trumpet, played here by Matthias Lindermayr. Oh, but then, there is that Yamaha upright that carries a flavour so lush of its own. Here, Alberg is able to ring out the textural tone shifts with his exceptional, flawless control of the instrument, painting wide pastel landscapes with a gorgeous sonic palette. And yeah, okay, I am jealous. I'm jealous that I'm no longer in my twenties, making music as beautiful as this. But that is okay. I'm delighted. I'm happy to sidestep and listen and offer this space to a lovely new voice.

Sound In Silence is proud to announce the return of Hessien, presenting their new album The Alchemist.

This is their second release on the label after the highly acclaimed, and already sold out, Calcifer EP back in 2013.

Hessien is the ambient duo of Tim Martin (Maps and Diagrams, Atlantis, Karst, Bluhm, Black Elk, Ouvala) and Charles Sage (y0t0, The Rothko Chapel).
A twenty-year UK electronic and experimental veteran with over thirty album releases, Tim Martin has released on multiple labels and appeared on John Peel's iconic radio show. In addition to curating the Citygenetic project, his photography has been shown globally in the CityLab art collective, he dabbles in audio visual comms and he also runs the Handstitched* record label.
After a solid ten years on Australia’s indie pub circuit, Charles Sage issued four releases as y0t0 and co-founded guitar noise collective The Rothko Chapel (Pete Dowd, Noveller, Steve Kilbey, Tape Loop Orchestra, elintseeker, Tree Of Man). He also curated Internecine: The Vanished Musicians, a multimedia tribute to refugee musicians interned during the Second World War.

Hessien were prolific in the first half of the last decade, releasing works on Fluid Audio, Sound In Silence, Beko DSL, Long Story, and Audio Gourmet.
After an extended hiatus, Hessien return with The Alchemist, a companion piece to 2010’s Home Is Where the Ghost Is, a one-hour asymmetrical trip through guitar textured dream-state sound design. Carefully mastered by George Mastrokostas (Absent Without Leave), The Alchemist is an evolution in their instantly recognisable tone, reflecting the influence of side projects, collaborations, and life experiences of the last ten years.

This is a limited edition of 200 handmade and hand-numbered collectible copies. It is packaged in a lovely hand-stamped 127mm x 127mm 250 gsm dark brown recycled cardboard envelope with the front cover image printed on a polaroid style photo paper and an insert sheet containing tracklist and information printed on a 120 gsm smoky grey recycled cardboard. It also comes bundled with a download code coupon and a Sound In Silence card.

Hessien - Solingen

Radio Haw is the music project of Matt Gray. Influences range from Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Robert Hunter-penned Grateful Dead, to Triangle-area neighbors Hiss Golden Messenger. 

Radio Haw creates "bedroom" folk that would fit in the record crate alongside Elliott Smith or Hiss Golden Messenger's early 4-track-recorded Bad Debt. The songs are elevated from the bedroom toward the cosmic on the back of their searching lyrical content, crunchy guitars, and ethereal organs. Set all of this in Radio Haw's backyard of tree-shrouded, poison ivy-lined, Haw River paths in the North Carolina Piedmont and the sound rounds out into its own flavor of southern gothic folk rock.

With a vibe that would suit the jukebox of some supernatural roadhouse just out of town, many of the songs off the upcoming album, counsel of serpents, started as home demo recordings alongside the unrest of the early 2020s. With lyrical motifs ranging from the exploitation of spirituality to too-long acid trips, counsel of serpents speaks to the perils and triumphs of being human in our current world.
