'Midnight Letters' [Andrew Tasselmyer & Blurstem] [PITP-C027]

I've got a very lovely piano piece for you this morning from the ever-lovely Moderna imprint, which continues to scour the hidden corners of the scene to bring you some of the most heartfelt music. This one comes from the emerging [and pretty young] Augsburg-based (Germany) composer Linus Alberg, offering us his label debut, titled Elements. On this collection of eight tracks, Alberg shares his sentimentality, initially inspired by the changing of the seasons but somehow evoking something else entirely, at least in me, as if uncovering a buried key to a forgotten memory. His incredible compositional musicality is only surpassed by the execution, whereby remarkably gentle melodies effortlessly flutter in the curated space, held together by the solid bass, frequency-rich harmonium, and occasional echoes of the breathy trumpet, played here by Matthias Lindermayr. Oh, but then, there is that Yamaha upright that carries a flavour so lush of its own. Here, Alberg is able to ring out the textural tone shifts with his exceptional, flawless control of the instrument, painting wide pastel landscapes with a gorgeous sonic palette. And yeah, okay, I am jealous. I'm jealous that I'm no longer in my twenties, making music as beautiful as this. But that is okay. I'm delighted. I'm happy to sidestep and listen and offer this space to a lovely new voice.

Sound In Silence is happy to welcome back Yellow6, presenting his new album Civil Twilight.

Yellow6 is the solo project of Jon Attwood, based in Leicestershire, UK. During the last two decades he has established himself as one of the foremost purveyors in the ambient/post-rock scene, having released his music on labels such as Enraptured, Make Mine Music, Resonant, Cathedral Transmissions, and his own Editions6, amongst many others. Since 1998 he has played many shows in Europe and North America, and has collaborated with many other artists such as Portal, Thisquietarmy, Absent Without Leave, Caught In The Wake Forever, David Newlyn, Charles Atlas, Stafrænn Hákon and many others too.

Civil Twilight is made up of eight new tracks, showcasing the trademark sound of Yellow6 at its best, utilizing layers of haunting guitar melodies, loops of ambient textures and minimal beats.
The music on Civil Twilight was selected from something over two hours of material that came along through playing and inspiration, and compiled when the material fitted together to make a coherent collection.
“The twilight is divided into three parts. Civil twilight is when the sun sets, until it falls six degrees below the horizon, nautical twilight twelve degrees, and astronomical twilight at eighteen degrees, after which comes night.”
Civil Twilight is expertly mastered by George Mastrokostas (Absent Without Leave) and features sleeve artwork and photography by Sky Attwood.

Civil Twilight comes in two distinct editions.

The first one is a deluxe limited edition of 100 handmade, hand-stamped and hand-numbered collectible copies. This edition includes an exclusive bonus disc, not included in the other edition or the digital download. The bonus disc, entitled Star Flowers, includes two long-form tracks that are only available in physical format here. These two tracks were recorded in a short period in mid 2023. Not originally intended to be long-form tracks, they grew until they seemed to have found their place. It is packaged in a lovely, hand-tied, sewn fabric envelope, which includes two 4 panel insert sheets containing tracklist and information printed on 250 gsm light grey and cream recycled cardboards and the front cover images printed on polaroid style photo paper. It also comes bundled with a download code coupon and a Sound In Silence card.

The second one is a limited edition of 200 handmade and hand-numbered collectible copies. It is packaged in a lovely hand-stamped 127mm x 127mm 250 gsm light grey recycled cardboard envelope with the front cover image printed on a polaroid style photo paper and an insert sheet containing tracklist and information printed on a 170 gsm off-white recycled cardboard. It also comes bundled with a download code coupon and a Sound In Silence card.
